What the hell do you guys want? Here's a thought, how about instead of bitching like a bunch of whiny fanboys you actually suggest how the show could be improved? This is a rare opportunity to actually HELP a production rather than just shit all over it, and none of you are taking advantage.

Every new show goes through some growing pains, and I'm not ready to give up on this one yet. Lighting: MUCH better. Pacing: Getting its stride. Editing: a lot tighter.

Zak et. al., you're not there yet, but you're getting the right idea.

I know I'm going to get flak for this like I always do when I disagree with the self-important geeks around here, but if I actually cared what any of them thought, I'd never speak my mind.

Unlike the majority of commenters, I know what its like to produce a show and edit video & its bloody HARD TO DO.

So let them feed their own egos by dumping on your ideas, if that's all they can bring to the table then too bad for them for their lack of imagination or creativity. Its a whole lot easier to tear something down than to try and help improve it.
You'd only get flak because of the way you decided to grab the attention of the other viewers.. I too know what it's like to be on set. It's something I've done since high school, went to school for, and heck, I was even an extra in a movie, which is something I'm aiming to do again very soon...

I gave this show a second chance, and I'm sorry, it's just not appealing to me, but just because I know what it's like to be behind the scenes and in front of the camera, I'm not going to act like I should be sitting at a higher level than the other viewers..

You say you don't care, but you lash out anyway... After reading the previous comments, none of them seemed all that bad... Considering that you end up reading comments like that everywhere, why let it bother you? Sure they could be more productive, but to take the approach that you did? It's not going to help your cause at all...

Forums are here for people to voice their opinions... Not all of them are going to find the show appealing enough to want to help it out. All I can suggest is, if it bothers you that much that you talk down on other viewers, don't read the forums at all... Because you're creating flame-bait... You may not care, but the mods will see it as a problem if it keeps up.

a group of fairly good looking women with one of the shittiest DM's in known history. wtf, escapist? you can't be this desperate for content. seriously, his total DMing skills amount to "there's a city over there" "she has a mask thing on a stick" and my favorite, his one npc that sounds like it has throat cancer. I think this is kind of insulting to female gamers, as all of them are strippers, etc. Is that the only way for female gamers get on camera? if they only happen to be "adult entertainers" ?

so, not watching this again.
Actually, Mr Magnuslion, I'm a Comic Book Illustrator who happened to strip and do porn for a couple of years of my life. The Idea of the show is that girls like to play D&D too... Even Porn Stars and Strippers and Hairdressers. Maybe you'd like to watch a show that has all Female Paralegals playing D&D? Either people like watching other people Play Dungeons and Dragons or they don't. Personally I love watching people play D&D and listening to various D&D pod casts. Its not for everyone and we know this. If you didn't like the idea in the first place, why would you watch it? The TV show the Bachelor doesn't interest me at all but I don't go on the Bachelor's forums going on and on about how much it sucks. Why would any one waste their time commenting on a show that they wouldn't watch no matter who was cast in it?

I'm liking it. There's certainly room for improvement, but I could see it getting a lot more interesting once the game takes off a bit. Keep at it!
I do think that most of the other comments are a bit too severe, but this is the Internet. *sigh*
Thanks a bunch! When I play other people's D&D Shows/Podcasts I like it when its long and I listen to it/watch it in the background when i'm working. My personal opinion is that this show should be at least 10 minutes long if not 20 minutes with "previously on ..." commentary at the begining of the show so you can really get into what is going on and connect with the characters better. But I'm not the editor or producer. Its really up to them.

Well its still infinetly better than Game Dogs. I like reality tv though. It would help for this show to focus on something interesting. It could be used to show that the game is fun but instead makes me think of how boring playing D&D is.

I think it would help to focus on the theme of non D&D players trying to get into the game. Thats why Sasha Grey is my favorite. I can relate most to her. The porn star novelty is wearing off for this show to be truly entertaining beyond its first episode. Even the guys in the background seemed bored :p

Yeah I do have to wonder about all those people who don't care about the premise... why the hell are you still watching?

Personally I love it. It's not the kind of thing to make me roar with laughter, but it's this sort of continuous stream of gentle entertainment. I think the editing could be a little better though. It's definitely a good thing that you don't show the whole thing continuously because that would be very boring, but I think it would pay to show just a tad more roleplaying.

Keep the basis of just skipping to the more important and funnier bits, but don't make the skips quite so sudden as now.

I guess a lot of people are having some incorrect expectations, this isn't porn just because it has adult entertainers in it and it isn't a DnD experience just because it has DnD in it. It's a bunch of fun people playing a game that has plenty potential for confusion and funny arguments. If that doesn't appeal to you, stop torturing yourself by watching something you know you won't like. (And stop torturing others by complaining about it)

There is ONLY one improvement that can be made to this show. Cancelling it. Or killing it with fire. Either works.

Also funny you follow this line "Unlike the majority of commenters, I know what its like to produce a show and edit video" with "So let them feed their own egos"

Yes I can sympathise. This annoying viral show keeps dragging in my mouse pointer, forcing me to click it and watch the entire length of it before it will let me do anything else as well.

As a DM myself I'm still enjoying it, I can watch people play D&D and still be interested. It's also a little disappointing to see people criticize Zak's DMing style based on 5 minutes of video instead of looking at his blog.

Yeah, some DMs don't get really theatrical, that doesn't mean they can't run a good game. The important things that need to be done when DMing D&D actually has very little to do with whether or not you choose to voice act all the NPCs, but more to do with how you do your world-building and whether you can put together an adventure that keeps your players interested.

I sat through the first one thinking it would get better. I mean plenty of shows I like have started off slowly so, like, give it a chance, right?

Ugh. This is just bad. Even worse than the bloody dogs.

I feel like it's attempt to pull off another Felicia Day thing ala The Guild. That is, attractive women do nerdy things and put it online to build nerd following. The key difference being that The Guild is bland and sort of endearing, with a mixed and cutsey boy/girl-next-door vibe, while this is just straight boring with girls who, while hot, are kinda gross.

lol, exactly.

Nobody is forcing any of you to watch this. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Quit your bitching and leave the show to those who can enjoy it.

Well it's definitely getting better and I loved the bit with the infamous "NPC voice" that every experienced player and DM knows all too well.

Still I'm absolutely stunned over how much controversy this is generating. The first episode garnered more comments than that days ZP episode and I've been hearing nothing but forum-firestorm all over my usual haunts regarding this show, most of it negative...

Still, I hope you guys keep at it! I'm looking forward to Episode 5 where it's supposed to "get good."

It's like whenever I did any sort of role-playing. Except I always used Paranoia so there was a ridiculous amount of plotting and weird traps.

CopperBoom said:
The problem is the editing, it is so disjointed and the episodes are not cut with any narrative yet. If it was just all of them bonking it probably would not be an issue, but right now this just feels aimless. I say this because I think there is a show here.
Yeah, I felt this as well. Especially when you had the shot of one of them staring to take off their coat, and then it cut and her coat was half off.

You're right; get over yourself.

You said most of us haven't ever edited video, so we don't have any basis for bitching about a crappy show? Alright, well I've edited videos before, so I know it takes a lot of work, and this barely had any work done on it. Cutting out stuff what was too boring to put in this already boring show is about all that was done. Somebody else made a point that other shows on the Escapist put effort into the work, doing things like animating, voice acting, rehearsing lines, etc. etc., whatever needs to be done, but even then some of them just aren't as entertaining as others.

This show does NONE of that stuff, and it's STILL bad. All they do is use a crappy camcorder to record people playing D&D, then keep what they feel were the most interesting bits (Which obviously aren't all that interesting for the majority of the viewers if you judge by the comments left.)

You want us to give some constructive criticism, and help them improve? Alright: Use a better camera. Show us more than just the commentary. When you show us commentary that doesn't advance the "plot" then at least try to make it interesting (funny, dramatic, whatever.) Don't bank on the players being porn stars to push the show along. No matter who you are, or what you do for a living, if you can't keep the masses on the internet entertained, then they'll shit all over you. Period.

Then what grounds do you have to complain?

I mean at this point you don't even know what to be critical of, this is almost trolling. Except trolling involves intentionally trying to piss people off, and you just look like an idiot.

Ah I see, my apologies I didn't realize that you didn't actually watch it. That does make all the difference.
On a completely unrelated note, does the escapist have an "informed opinion" award badge?

This is the criticism I don't get. Why does it have to be entertaining for a majority of members on the Escapist. It's a very niche show, yes, however that just means it isn't your thing. As long as there is anybody who enjoys it in its current form, there really is no reason for it to try to please the likes of you.

My point, I suppose, is that this series will probably never click with the core demographic of the escapist magazine and that's not really anybody's fault. If the site managers want to keep the series here for personal reasons, I totally appreciate that and will be a loyal viewer for as long as it lasts. Hopefully less and less people will feel the need, though, to announce publicly that they're not the target audience by denigrating either the game to which they owe their digital fun or Zac and his friends who probably get more than enough shit from people for their day jobs.
I want to leave aside any discussion of the dungeonmastering, video editing or film-making of the show - which I leave to people with more expertise than I -- and just respond to this point about whether this will "click with the core demographic". The Escapist is growing at 2-3% per month. Our 36-month growth rate is over 700%. That means the core demographic is constantly changing. The core demographic who visited the site from 2005 to 2007 is different than the visitor from 2007 to 2009. The visitor today is different than the visitor in 2009. Many of our 2007 hardcore audience complained that we were ruining the site when we added Zero Punctuation.

When we launch new types of content that is different from what we're already delivering, it's not because we don't understand our audience. We knew, for instance, that the same audience that liked ZP would also like Unskippable. But reaching the same audience has its limits. The Escapist already serves more page views per user than virtually all of our competitors. The Escapist's readers already spend more time on site than virtually all of our competitors. Our hardcore users already complain that we have too much content, i.e., they don't have anymore time to spend with us.

So with "Axe," we aren't necessarily trying to reach the people who are already coming here. We're trying to reach new people with something we think is cool. People that are coming for ZP... are already here and watching ZP. Sure, some of those folks will like the show, but we want to reach the people we aren't reaching but who might dig this show.

And it's not a zero sum game. When we grow, we get more resources to do more shows. We have more content now then ever because we keep growing our audience.

It's thus ironic that while some forum-goers here are trashing I Hit It With My Axe because it's not for them, the show has gone on to have the strongest premier we've had in over a year, and the first show we've ever launched that has more traffic off-site (embedded and virally circulating) than on site. We didn't do any marketing for this show on The Escapist. No teasers, no ads, no banners. Instead, this show is going viral on dozens of blogs all over the web. It's being enjoyed by folks who hadn't heard of us yet. That's a good thing, an awesome thing. Meanwhile, 0.6% of the people who saw the video are on the forums, i.e. not even 1 in 100 folks.

So, if you don't like D&D, or reality shows, then the show is probably not for you. No worries. Just like if you don't have a 360, our 360 reviews are probably irrelevant to you. That's why we have something like a dozen shows a week, so there's something for you somewhere.
