The key word in that sentence is think. I've had that feeling before and I know how much it sucks, there is really nothing you can do except hope for the best or just buy her another one.

Since you were not aware of it until it was already gone, then I would consider you completely NOT, repeat NOT, responsible for it.

Some advice for finding it: Don't freak out. Think about where you were wearing the sweater, and calmly retraced you steps. I myself just spent two weeks looking for my video camera, and only after I stopped looking did I find it in the first box I opened.

I've got the feeling that some young hooligan came around and done took it. This one is probably gone for good...

If the iPod was stolen at school it's probably not going too be hard to find out who took it. Once you find who it was it won't be too hard to get it back.

This, but if she didn't tell you it was there, and didn't have the common sense to take it out of the sweater before she gave it back to you, I'd be tempted to say it was her fault. But you may get castrated for even hinting this, depending on how pissed she is over the whole thing. Peace can be easily restored by offereing to replace the iPod though...
