I've gained some weight in the past few months, and I want it off. I have some important things to do that require me to be...well, a lot more fit. Does anyone here have any suggestions? What are some good, healthy ways to lose weight?

Yes, I realize the IMMENSE irony in asking this on a video games forum.
I'm 35 and I'm not much bigger now than I was when I was 21. I used to be very skinny, now I'm kinda average but certainly not fat or even a little overweight. I've never played sport or exercised a great deal and I play computer games all day. My advice:

Firstly, don't diet. Waste of time, ignore all diets you see. Instead, change your eating habits, permanently.

Don't drink any soft/fizzy drinks if you can help it. Especially that energy drink crap. Once per week maximum. Keep any other drinks that are not soft drink besides water down to one glass per day. Raw fruit is better than fruit juice. If you drink coffee black is best but not more than three times per week or you'll get addicted to caffeine and become an irritable bastard. Green tea is the best tea there is and super cheap from any asian grocer. Swap out full cream milk for either light milk or soy milk. Soy milks very wildly, some taste crap and some are amazing.
Don't eat fast foods more than once a week, less is better.
Learn to cook. Cook vegetarian and lean meats. Learn to cook asian food, tastes brilliant and totally good for you.
If you smoke, quit. If you drink, drink less. Beer dehyradtes you and makes you thirsty, making you drink more beer, if you're drinking alternate between beer and water.
Don't eat sugary stuff more than three times per week. Dark chocolate is better than milk.
Eat as much carbs as you want but don't eat more than one high-carbohydrate food PER MEAL. Pasta is okay. Rice is okay. Potatoes is okay. Bread is okay. Pasta + potatoes = no. Rice + potatoes = no. Pasta + bread = no. You get the idea. If you love the garlic bread, eat it a couple hours either side of the pasta.
Eat as much protien as you want but don't eat more than on high protien source per meal (no more than two if both protien sources are not meat).
Eat something green and vaguely vegetable-ish at least once per day.
Try not to eat anything at all 3 hours before you go to sleep.
Better to eat small meals several times per day than one or two huge meals.
Read the ingredient list of everything you buy. Get natural food where possible.
Do not EVER starve yourself, when your body starves it stores fat. If you are hungry, eat. Unsalted nuts are the best snack food to kill hunger cravings just before bed or between bigger meals, I keep raw almonds and cashews in the house always.

Exercise. Walking is the most effective exercise to help you lose weight and/or maintain a low weight level - better than running, riding a bike, aerobics or lifting weights/working out - those other exercises are better for FITNESS and STRENGTH, but we're talking only about LOSING WEIGHT here, important not to confuse the issue. By all means work out too if it takes your fancy because muscles do burn fat, but if you must choose only one exercise make it walking. Walking is also the easiest exercise you'll ever do. Walk 20 mins per day minimum, but the more the better. Get into the habit of walking small distances instead of jumping in the car if you want to go and get something from the shops or go to a friend's place or whatever.

Good luck.

Get yourself a spade and dig holes. Seriously. Go outside and dig a deep hole. Then fill it in. Then dig it again. Then fill it in. You will lose serious weight in no time.

I used to weigh just over 300lbs about 16 months ago. But one day I decided to walk to work rather than take a bus (25 minute walk BTW) and found it was easy. I lost 25lbs in the first month and another 25 since then (I've since moved and now I have a 45 minute hike to work. Winter's gonna be fun...). I haven't really changed my eating habits but it's amazing what one little change will do for your body.
You rule. I should get out more. So long as I don't start walking to the McDonalds >.<
(We actually don't eat there that much.)

One of the things to consider is are you trying to just drop some quick poundage or are we talking about a lifestyle change here? Something I've been told that works great as a lifestyle change is to not eat meals but rather graze throughout the day on pre-planned healthy intakes of what your body needs. Eating a small, healthful portion every two hours will boost your metabolism and help your exercise routine. You'll never have all that much in your stomach but something will always be there. Try to work on shrinking your meal sizes first before your body starts thinking you're starving it - that's bad. You can gain more weight with sudden radical changes in diet than small changes over time.

Cycling and/or swimming.

Either two strenuous three hour long bike rides (on or off road, doesn't matter, just wear a helmet and make sure your bike is in a reasonable state of repair) or two 2500m swims a week (most pools are 25m, so that's 100 lengths).

They're what I do to drop weight and it works a charm, much better than any diet because you keep the weight off and gain muscle at the same time.

Obviously don't try going from nothing to that in one go, start doing something fairly small, say 30 lengths of a pool in three 10 length sections and work up. The ultimate goal is to be able to do the full 100lengths in under an hour (my record is around the 40 minutes mark), try to aim to be able to do that 9 months to a year after you first swim.

I personally don't get on with running, it's too hard on my knees next to cycling or swimming. To lose weight you need to do excersize, you'll never lose weight and keep it gone through dieting alone.

Follow the same guidelines I gave for the guy trying to lose weight, except instead of walking you should work out and eat some form of protein at every meal.

Basically take creatine and do weights.

Also, read this on the Southern Downhill site http://www.southerndownhill.com/forum/index.php/topic,147547.0.html
It's mountain biking focused but the advice there holds true in general.

Out of curiosity, what?

Also, apparently sex is good excersize if you can't convince yourself to go out for a run.

Eat healthy and don't drink carbonated drinks. Don't eat sweets. Take a walk every day, thats enough to be healthy.

try 1 and a half hours of cardio a day, doesnt have to be strenuous just start of with a jog for 15 mins to half an hour to get your pulse up and then just hike around for an hour or so, good thing about this is theres hardly any impact so you can keep your streaching to a minimumn, keep your fluids up too, and cut down on salty products and sugars, as they all contribute to bloating and water retention.

EAT HEALTHY! Try to eat more balanced (protein, vegetables and fruits), don't go out to eat more than 2 times a week. Be sure to hydrate (drink a lot of water) at all times. Also, keep track of your calories - don't go over what you should be eating (2200 a day or less). If you really want to be serious about this, see your doctor or nutritionist specialist on ways to eat healthier. DO NOT DRINK SODA IT WILL MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EXERCISE!!!!! Along with eating healthy, exercise is extremely important as well. Try to get in an hour a day if possible. Joining a gym is a great idea, since you can work on cardio for 30 mins, and then head to strength training.

If you really want to be serious about getting in shape, see your doctor - it is very important otherwise you could be risking your long-term health. Also, it helps to have people to support you.

pretty much everythings been said. my best advice is just find a set of excersises and lifting that you don't mind (so you can actually keep it up.) The biggest thing that helped me was putting an exercise bike in my living room. Its just alot easier to work out (for me) while i can still watch tv and play my videogames. haha

I'm exercising for a military job application, and I agree with that everyone is saying here, but I'll add that the hardest part for me is that half the time I'm doing it on my own, which makes it harder to find the motivation, if you can get someone else to exercise with you it'll make a lot of difference.

I lost a bunch of weight over the summer by playing more video games. I would wake up and it would be around noon so it was too late for breakfast. Then I played video games until dinner and only ate dinner and a couple of small snacks. Playing video games kept my mind preoccupied so that I wasn't thinking about food. What's important though is that you drink a lot of water while doing this.

This will only get rid of the fat however, I about a month in I started doing some light workouts to be more fit overall. I don't know if this will work for you, but considering we are on a video game forum I would assume anyone would jump on the idea of a video game related "diet".

Eat less. I lost about 5 kilos in one month doing only that once. Didn't even go hungry.

40 minutes on a stairclimber. Do eet. It's not that hard after a while, though I recommend starting at level 1 and keeping water both in bottles and buckets nearby.
