We had forgotten about it, and left it to fester away and die in the darkest corners of the internet for over a decade.

I can see it now, you defeat what you thought was the final boss and then walk through the door to where you believe your prize is lying in wait. However, when you get inside all there is is a mirror. Then the disembodied voice of what you have just beaten tells you that it's all been for nothing. You have had no motivation to fight through all the pointless, irritating and offensive garbage the game has thrown at you other than your own masochism. If you'd wanted you could have chosen to leave at any time, nobody would have stopped you and your life would have been much easier for it. You brought it all on yourself. There is no way to win the internet. Your only options are to stay, or stop playing.

I don't know about you but I think that would be a seriously affecting ending.
