If you could do away with 1 gaming genre, what would it be?

Not a genre in and of, but used in too many genres- I'd do away with 1st Person viewpoints all together. Why? Because for some reason I can't do jack shit when in those viewpoints and there are a lot of FP--- I want to play and not suck at. Besides, why come up with these kick ass designs for characters when all you see is their hand and maybe their leg when looking down?

At least do what Oblivion and Fallout 3 did and give an optional 3rd person view for single player at least.

Ok, your turn.

EDIT: either that or button mashie fightning games. They're all the same and none are fun.
Fire Emblem and Advance Wars would like to have a word with you....

OT: Sports games, because its the same thing every time.

Anyone else think this is a Flame war waiting to happen?
OT: I'ld probibly pick JRPG's or sports games, seeing as I play neither so I won't really care one way or another.

It'd have to be multiplayer FPS's.

I do enjoy them occasionally but they stop a lot of people from trying out other genre's. I hear about kids playing them and thinking they're the best games out their far too often.

FPS's.

I like turn based combat if it's done well and requires you to actually be intuitive and think the strategy through fully, not the mindless HOLD X FOR ATTACK AND WIPE FLOOR WITH EVERYTHING.

FPS's just because it'd be nice to see people try to use their imagination more then COD7012 and Halo4251
or half life 2 ep 3 oh wait
My view may be narrow, but don't release a series of games. Release one game, and that's it. It shouldn't be referenced in another game you make, the name should be unique. It helps if you read :). Also I don't like the Half Life series not have any motivation to play it so oh well guess I don't care.

Why would I want to do away with any genre of games, if I don't like the game I don't play it. Destroying a genre of games would be similar to destroying a genre of movies. If you destroyed all romance movies you would get rid of thousands of bad movies like Twilight or Eat Pray Love, but you would also get rid of Casablanca. Similarly, I don't like most puzzle games, but I don't want to get rid of the genre because I liked the new Heroes of Might and magic. Destroying a genre would devalue the medium as a whole.

Turn based RPG's, turn based strategies. If I have to pick, one, it would be turn based RPG's, they are obsolete, go play a Square Enix game for a turn based RPG.

Civilization? Total War series? Heroes of Might and Magic (2, 3 + expansions)? You know, those games regarded for being some of the best of all time? :p

I wouldn't remove any, diversity's a good thing, I'm capable of ignoring stuff I don't like and I can't think of a single genre that universally has a bad effect on gaming or gamers (no, not even casual games or MMOs).

The Halo inspired FPS genre.
This guy has a point too. Although I'm not a fan of CoD inspired FPS' either... Bioshock/L4D rule!

Grr, this is a tough one for me. I like at least a few games in almost every genre. I would say FPS because tbh they've really changed gaming from what it was, and not always in a good way, but that means no Prime Series, TF2, Portal, HL2, etc. If I could specify to the generic brown fps's that come out every year, like what some people are doing, then I would, but that's not really a genre. I can't really say jrpg because I love the mario and paper mario rpg's. Racing is out of the question for me, because I'm really good at some of those. I guess I could say MMO, since I really don't play any, and it'd probably be the best for everyone and their wallets.

I guess FPS because they usually have very short campaigns. Even if I don't play them, they may lower the standards for single-player content. Though honestly, I want everyone to be able to enjoy his or her favorite genre.

I second turn based RPG's and or JRPG's. I hate turn based things, and I hate emos.
You mean to tell me you'd rather let turn-based RTS games exist? I would much rather play Pokemon or, Final Fantasy than another Civilization or, Advanced Wars.

I also don't see a need for games like Heavy Rain.

EDIT: I agree about button-mashy fighting games. Those are pretty much all bad. Fun to watch though.

Turn-based sucks? Maybe for RPGs, but look: X-COM, Civilization, Space Empires, Jagged Alliance...

I wouldn't want to get rid of any genre, as each one has its fans, but if I had to choose one it'd be fighting games. I've just never seen the attraction.

I couldn't disagree more, and you make me very angry.

Although Heavy Rain was over-designed and had shitty controls (QTEs, "gestures", the conversation system), there are many awesome "games like Heavy Rain" (a.k.a. adventure games), Monkey Island, Dreamfall, Syberia...
