If you could feel pain would you still play?

I have thought about this before actually on several occasions. To what degree would I accept it...I wouldn't mind a dull sensation rather than a sharp one that indicated that I'd been hit, (by bullet, foot, knife, bat, flying toilet) but nothing too insane that would put me right off playing it. Then again, the game would have to be at a much more immersive level, where I wouldn't be holding a controller or at my mouse and keyboard and getting whacked because that would just make me feel stupid. Then again, if games were getting that immersive, I would start drawing the line between the 'why not just do it in real life?' level, i.e: playing airsoft/paintball, sparring with friends, having a basketball game, etc.

Now what I would be REALLY interested in is a G-Force simulator, that could enhance driving games somehow, that would totally kick-ass and I would pay almost any amount to get the feeling of an F1 or rally car in my bedroom while strapped to a racing chassis (I also specialize in building these =] )

and I mean, it's not that easy to modify a 'decently' fast +300hp car and take it to track days in many countries now is it...well less than usual..sorry for going off topic a bit!

Like many, yes, but with restrictions.

First of all, it would be lame to have to wear a full suit of equipment for something like this to work under current technology, so I'm going to use a future technology scenario that is more likely to be adopted mainstream.

If a game were able to stimulate senses and nerves, It'd bring game immersion to a much higher level. Imagine going to a snowy area in a game and feeling the chill - you get the idea. Feeling the feedback from what is encountered in the game, environment and all; that's where it's at.

As for pain, if this ever becomes a reality, SOMEONE will misuse the technology. That's a given. Someone, somewhere will make a game with 1:1 pain transference and someone/many someones will die from shock. Laws will need to be put into place to govern what type of feedback is allowed and what demographic will be restricted from using it and blah blah.

As for what I'd personally play - at the absolute worst, I'd accept a paintball like shot in a FPS, but ONLY if the balls were off limits. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. I'd rather feel a jolt or pressure than actual pain. Full lock-ups for disabled limbs would probably be too dangerous. Our bodies were not meant to be toyed with that way. I'd be very worried about the long-term repercussions of over-using that kind of force feedback.

I could ramble forever but this is already becoming a length beyond what most would read, so I'm done here.

sounds interesting but no. In real life it only takes one bullet to send you into shock and yes it is possible to die from pain.

Yes I probably would given myself as an immersion junkie, on the downside I don't like COD :(

Having the pain brought down by 80% is still going to hurt like a mother fucker if you get shot, or set on fire, or stabbed, or blown up, or drowned, or corroded, or electrocuted, or chainsawed, or eaten, or crushed, or beaten to a pulp.

So no I would not play a game like this.

I'm sorry, but have you ever actually been stabbed, or shot for that matter? i don't know how they would manage to simulate getting stabbed considering you probably wont feel it, not for a few hours at least. And when you start to feel the pain it just hurts like you wouldn't believe.
Did you make an account just to tell us that you've been stabbed? That's horrific!

Welcome to the Escapist!

Of course I would it's just that I would strictly play old, pain-disabled games from yesteryear like The Mass Effect trilogy and, the High-Definition, Remastered Halo (and KotOR) Anthologies. Hell, there are a ton of games from yesteryear and the year before that I still need to get my hands on. like Metroid Prime, Kid Icarus, God of War 1 & 2, Mega Man 1 - 10 and, countless others which are likely never going to go away.

If pain-enabled games became the mandatory standard then I'm done with video games and switching to D&D and other LRPGs. Pain-enabled games would also be the end of portable gaming unless the Gameboy 2600 is surgically implanted into the brain.

What about Doom and Quake where you blow into 116 little pieces? Wouldn't that hurt a LOT? Obviously it would be optional though. What if you fell in lava or were slowly lowered into a pit of acid? Or have a drill shoved through your eye?

This thread made me think of a ridiculous vest for the Sega Genesis, it was like a rumble controller for the torso but it ran on sound. It shook when there was loud explosions or punching but more importantly it shook constantly if the game had any music in it. That thing could make you sick! Combining in with a Virtual Boy would be worse then waterboarding.

OT - No, probably not. Imagine how actually feeling any of Isaac Clark's deaths in Dead Space for a minute... even at 20% hell no. Maybe I'd still play Katamari but I'm not even sure about that.

Hold on...This post is by somone called Gabe. I could've sworn I heard something about Valve studying people's reactions to certain aspects of games to make them better and more immersive not too long ago...

Yeah, as long as it's toned down 80% it sounds like a decent idea - maybe the pain of a paintball?

I mean, I've got a high pain threshold, but hell no. The games I play would still make that terrible. That's the POINT of games. You can do things you could never do in real life. I mean, if I got the pain does that mean I also got the killer marksmanship or the magic or the weapons? All or nothing here.

Hell...YES!
It'd be like awesome paintball! All the fear, adrenaline and running, without gear, and with a whole new atmosphere, but yeah 90% or more pain reduction.
