If you had to make a shooter game, what would its story be?

I would totally make a high fantasy fps with orcs/elves/halflings/etc. but in a modern setting. I would really love to see orcs decked out in secret service black uniforms shooting rifles...

A futuristic setting where you play as the wife of an American military officer who used to be in the military, and is now six months pregnant. Both you and your husband are stationed on a colony world. An alien invasion force hits the military base as part of a large-scale invasion, and your house is bombarded while you're at your neighbors house. You survive, your husband dies. Your neighbors six-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son survive, but their parents are dead.

As you attempt to flee from the overwhelming enemy forces and trek across the war-torn world to an area where children and other non-combatants (such as pregnant women) are being evacuated.

Some humans are now mind-controlled, so any refugees you see might be able to assist, or might try to kill you, and they might not make it obvious at first.

All supplies have a weight and slow you down. You can carry a full arsenal of weapons, but it'll slow you down a LOT to do so.

The girl can squeeze into tight spots in order to retrieve supplies, and the boy can be trained to use weapons in order to back you up in a fight. You get to decide how much ammunition you can afford to expend training him. The kids can die.

You can regain health with injections of some sort of regenerative compound, but using too much of it over a limited period of time could cause birth defects or even a miscarriage.

Along the way, you'll need to make choices:

Whether or not to assist some refugees who are under attack
Whether or not to remain hidden from refugees who could either give you supplies or attack you
Whether or not to send the girl into the remains of destroyed structures to search for supplies and/or survivors
Whether or not to retrieve pieces of alien technology to help the greater war effort, at the risk of slowing you down
Whether or not to help wounded refugees get to temporary safe-havens where other survivors can help them, at the risk of slowing yourself down A LOT
Whether or not to assist soldiers that you know

You are Dean Masterson, a reclusive hunter who uses his trusty crossbow and canine companion to survive.

One fateful night, the forest you reside in is attacked by all kinds of mythical creatures (trolls, werewolves, vampires), and you must fight to survive.

As soon as anyone mentions 'ideas for games' my brain explodes with different concepts.
It's not fair, i don't have the tech or the nohow to create even a concept of this stuff in 2D lol

You are a normal guy or girl gamer living in the suburbs. Then suddenly, ZOMBIES. You have to survive your way through to the nearby military base by running your ass away/hiding/hotwiring cars. You can find weapons by going to neighbours houses and nearby stores but this runs the risk of getting eaten. D:

Once at the military base you have to put up with the smart arse soldiers who see you as nothing as a liability despite having dragged your gamer ass half way across the city. During the game your shot gets better etc. It all goes a bit resident evil though when it turns out the zombification actually started from a nearby chemical plant DUN DUN DUN.

I would like Bethesda to make it.

yay.

A writer (or someone who uses their imagination a lot in their line of work) goes on a short mental health vacation to europe. He starts hallucinating and seeing things from certain novels/screenplays hes written etc. He battles aliens, ninjas, and....uh lets say terrorists within his mind while using various firearms, over the top acrobatics and takedowns. Since its all in his head it would be understandable and still totally awesome. These battle could easily take place in well known areas in London, Paris etc. He starts drifting in and out of hallucinations quickly and when a city he visits is actually under a terrorist attack, he has no way of knowing whether its real or not.

Later he finds out that a corporation has been following him so as to test their new hallucinogenic product they were planning to use to get information out of war prisoners etc.

He goes on the hunt. But hes a still a little fucked up so it would make for some interesting gameplay.

Story takes place in three episodes. Each one in a different city London, Paris, Amsterdam.

Simply titled "Mind"

It's still a shooter if you're shooting SOMETHING, right? Not necessarily guns?

So I think a variation from bang-bang-bang would be nice. Energy blasts, or fireballs, or some other superhero or magic type. Maybe a City of Hero's, Paragon City esque game in first person, or perhaps you're some form of supersoldier, one man army (in story terms as well as gameplay), who can shoot energy out of their hands to blow away enemy soldiers.

A sci-fi stealth shooter in which you are sent to a colony that has only recently been conquered by alien invaders. You are really intended only as a speed bump to slow down their efforts to conquer the cities, terraform the planet and convert the populace into thrall. Since you are badly outgunned and only engage when you want to, there's plenty of down time to do some story elements, though I'm not sure if it should be open-world.

No matter what you accomplish the cities and wilderness WILL gradually take on a more and more creepy 'xenomorph' look as time goes by, and it's an uphill fight to stop civilians from drinking the (mind-control drugged) water or listening to the assimilation propaganda without blowing your cover when a patrol goes by. Eventually your superiors consider the colony to be a lost cause and abandon it, leaving it up to you and a handful of characters you've saved and exchanged backgrounds with to turn the tide through more direct confrontation now that you have allies and powerful captured weapons.

Either that or just make an extremely dark atmospheric current-gen Hexen 3.

You obviously fell into my trap.

Seriously though, just read a couple of posts above mine. If you still lost I'm sure there's a thread out there somewhere with cliff notes on whats not liked or is popular to hate here on the escapist. I'm just mocking them and it's pretty obvious you missed it.

Yep, that pretty much sums up the entirety of the internet. I'm so glad you figured it out.

i would make a gritty realistic modern day shooter, where you play as some grunt on the frontline of some busted up city under attack from god knows who, somewhere in the middle east...

With rampaging demons tearing shit up. For both sides.

The premise is simple: just look at battlefield 3, then add the threat (and later the ability) of monstrous demons of all shapes and sizes. From 20 foot Afreets that will rain fire down from the very sky, to Elephant sized Djinni that will simply run and try to destroy you with whatever spell/blade they have. Other varieties would include succubus, that wont directly attack, but will disorientate and decieve the player and their comrades, leading them further astray inside massive underground complexes before picking soldiers off into the darkness (think xenomorphs from Alien(s)).

Later on, you yourself will be captured, and will make a deal with a demon that can be summoned and upgraded, and even imbued into objects for short periods of time.

Here is the major game changer; the demon you make a pact with will be different according to the playing style you exhibit most. The plan would be for the levels to be large and dynamic, akin to crysis 2, with multiple access areas, as well as tactical locations and certain pieces of heavy ordenance (rocket launchers, artillery, mounted machine guns, all that jazz).

Depending on which routes/locations/weapons you use, the demon you deal with will be either a succubus (for players who opt for more sneaky play), an afreet for those who operate much heavier ordenance to destroy on large scale, or a djinni for players who play in a more varied way, or play the game more like a regular shooter.

Each demon will have different applications:

Succubus;
Imbue into self for temporary invisibility (not so much see through, as everyone else is blinded).
Imbue into weapon for a knife that will take out multiple apponents.
Summon, to have the demon destroy all the lights in the area while granting you the ability to detect enemies. Each enemy will hear different things so will wander off into different areas.

Afreet;
Imbue into self for the ability to shoot fire balls... yeah i know, not original.
Imbue into a weapon for... well im still thinking about that.
Summon to unleash a storm of fire that will forces enemies (and yourself) into cover, or otherwise destroy buildings and burn people to ashes.

Djinni;
Imbue into self for greatly enchanced strength and mobility (im talking hulk strength, such as picking two cars up and throwing them through cover)
Imbue into weapon for bullet time (im sorry, the idea well is drying out as we speak)
Summon to have the djinni charge, masacring anything and anyone that stands in their way.

... So yeah. That would be my idea. Although, chances are that someone has already said/done something like this. I would add more about how the demons would work, but ive already gone into too much detail about a game that will probably never exist.

Most people here are proposing guerrilla warfare, and I fully support this. I loved the SWAT games, and a proper guerrilla game would be like them, except you would be the one fighting against the police. Urban guerrillas in Brazil were awesome, as well as yugoslav partisans, but futuristic settings are cool as well, so long as the bad guys are white humans (this is what made Star Wars so compelling, imho)

EDIT: my word, jacob...get your ass into UDK and make that ************

Umm ok I'm gonna have to show restraint here so I don't get banned, your acting very unlikeably,I'm not sure you realise what i'm getting at here, you where speaking like an idiot I told you so, and then I fell into your trap. Turns out you where purposely being an idiot and then being a Dic... unlikeable person, how does that work?

A couple of ideas:

1) I would do an FPS were the story would be nonlinear. Each mission would have an objective and depending on how you fared the next mission would be easier, harder or completely different. Did you manage to destroy the bridge across the river? Excellent, you'll have a much easier time holding the town. Did you retreat when the enemy armor advanced? Well now you've been pushed up into the mountain and your new mission is to survive or harass the enemy until you can get extracted. Had you not retreated, you'd be participating in a counter attack. I'm sure this would be a pain to actually code and is something that is much easier to do with a table top pen and paper RPG.
This is brilliant. I would love to play this.

Me and a few friends have a game setting already built. We're hoping our other friend, the artsy type will pick up the story and do a comic for us.

Black rain's story is set in the future, but instead of going to space, humanity killed off it's own governments, poisoned the earth, and force those who aren't part of the corporations to Slum-like areas that used to be major cities around the world. People have rediscovered old secrets of the past, discovered by Earth One Living, which was destroyed during a few wars that happened back, as well as the well known Zeph-Tek corporation has found many ways to force cybernetic technology into the human body, stripping a few unlucky people what was left of their humanity.

If it HAD to be a shooter, it would be similar to STALKER. Weapons would be fairly realistic, and there's be a fair bit of cover based shooting in indoor environments (In first person, Blow me!) When someone is killed, it would show the power of the guns when the often sight occurs of being able to blow off a limb. (It worked amazingly well for NeoTokyo, take note the game will never pause to show you something like this) As you progress throughout the game, which may or may not be open world, you'll have the option to learn some magic, as well as improve your character with Implants. It's sort of a choose one scenario though, as your magic gets weakened with the more implants you have installed.

This idea is out on the internet. But it's in the form of a forum roleplay. Me and a few friends are working on balancing things out. (Implants were actually recently added to the Charsheets and we also recently got it copyrighted.) And numbers, OH the numbers... Fucking SHITLOADS of numbers everywhere. We practically just throw the fucking numbers around. On the walls, on the floor, ceiling... If your interested in it, Send me a PM. I'll send you the link.

EDIT:

Well, it would only have to be a consistent world, y'know, not even necesarily open. What you have described sounds a lot like guerrilla warfare to me. Man, do I fell like codin'.

My FPS would be a parody of the "super soldier" formula, in which the main character is a genetically engineered dog trying to escape from a research laboratory. He would have mounted turrets on his back that he controls with his brain. Oh, and he can talk.

I would go with...
You play a leader of a Resistance (bear with me here) who is lauded as a hero and worshipped by all. As the game progresses it becomes clear that something is a little off and when you're kidnapped by the big bad (the government) they reveal the truth. Showing that the Resistance is evil, using your charisma and charm (despite terrible leadership and combat ability) to lead the masses while behind the screens they experimented on their soldiers. So you spend the rest of the game killing your former comrades. yay for plot twists.

Bioshock esque abilities from the experiments coupled with varying weaponry. I just like the idea of a veneer of lies falling away, coupled with the reversal of the joining the freedom fighters thing. Since when were freedom fighters always on the right side?
The game HAZE kinda went with that thing. But your idea is awesome nonetheless.

You are a skinhead, a white supremacist, a Neo Nazi. Up until this point in your gang career, your crimes have not been particularly heinous. Shoplifting, grand theft auto, drug dealing and the like. You've hurt people, even killed rival gang members in shootouts and street brawls, but your opponent was always armed, always gunning for you as well.

Then one day, you are ordered to kill a preteen black girl. The game gives you the choice of following the order or waiting until your fellow gang members get impatient and do the deed themselves. Either way, it does not sit well with your character. He re-evaluates his life, all the people he has hurt and disrespected. His heart is no longer into his work. He tries to make amends, break his gang ties, but the gang would rather see him dead.

From this point on, it's a tale of revenge and redemption as you slowly but surely tear the gang apart. You drop anonymous tips to the police to get key gang facilities shut down, expose corrupt police officers and government officials, start wars between your former gang and their rivals, and ultimately, get close enough to the lieutenant who gave you the order (and who killed the girl if you refused to) in order to kill him yourself.

The game ends with you redeemed, but going to jail for a very, very long time.

Chances of this game being made: slim to none. Could be very artistic and very pertinent considering the gang and discrimination cultures present in the United States and elsewhere, but I imagine it being perhaps too controversial to be economically viable.
