If you were an alien civilization, how would you invade earth and why?

I probably wouldn't. I might actually try to help advance Earth's technology, but not before watching and studying everything I could about humans and their history. I would send a small, unmanned alien craft filled with our older technology * down and crash it into Area 51.
*If my race can travel between planets, its a safe bet that we can travel between stars in a relatively short amount of time. By older technology I mean technology that would have been developed shortly before we obtained intergalactic travel, hopefully only improving earths technology by a bit, because any more would probably come back to bit us in the butt as some point.

first, take out the countries with nuclear weapons first, like the United States, United Kingdom, China, India, Russia, ect... Then I would take out the more powerful countries without nukes like Germany and other. Finally, take out Africa, but not before obtaining the DNA of and African male and female to clone them and train them to do hard labor for an extended period of time, for increased profit, witch is the likely reason behind an alien invasion of Earth to begin with.

EDIT: OP: I would infiltrate earth, and "kill all the bees" so many of earth's oxygen suppliers would die out, then begin killing humans, they naturally would suspect a human, until it's too late
Reason? look at society and how its developing, look at what we are doing to this planet, sure theoretically its OUR planet, we can do what we want with it, but I'm under the assumption they have pretty much the same morals; I mean look at all the countries we invaded and said "Live like us" making them use our technology, our way of living. my wrists are getting sore now, so Ive probably said enough. I'd just show how much more advanced and powerful we were and let the feeble humans kill themselves off with massive culture shock.
Would Surround the Planet with Huge warships, tell them that they have no choice, join and enter an age of prosperity or become slaves. Tell them that there is no chance of humans winning as weapons like Nukes can just be destroyed before they reach anywhere near the warships and the radiation would just poison the planet, while joining them technology would be boosted, if i was in charge of an alien race id make sue i had the technology to replenish resources some way somehow, so just another race an planet to add the army of my empire 
Duh... Deploy my squadrons of death gliders to harass the earthlings while bombarding major cities from space. Then send down the harvest and enslaving drones. Men are made working slaves (and shall immediately begin creating a massive steel statue in my image), women are brainwashed, trained and implemented into my evil space forces, and the children are grind down and refined into the goo that powers my space ships and war machines. Once the idol is complete i will pump billions of gallons of poison gas into the planets atmosphere and leave the rest of the planet to die as I move on to wherever next there is living things.

Well, I wouldn't want to really advance the technology of Earth too much because humans like to expand and control everything very quickly. At first, you help them, then you're equals, then they take over. So I would wipe them out or alter them to be like cattle
I'd disguise myself as a human and takes notes of Earthican technology and then apply that knowledge to make massive superweapons and planet obliterators. Then in intricate detail plan out the invasion...first take out every non-american major country holding power (china, germany,France, UK and the like) leaving America to be last. In their cowering moments i demand they release all criminals from the prisons and give the criminals proper weapons to go and kidnap every big name celebrity that exists, bring them back to our ship and choose the most worthy. Those we deem unnecessary will be vaporized and all earthly records erased. Once we have enough we fly off and fire a giant laser into the earth's core causing a massive super nova type explosion. While heading back we change to human forms yet again and mate with the women to repopulate our species for future planet invasions. "The Universe will be ours" we cry in a celebratory manner
How: Use mind control to manipulate all the major world leaders and start a new world war. Then when resources are exhausted and defenses crushed, my alien armada swoops in, taking the entire planet by surprise and taking over without a fight since every world power is crushed and unable to resist.

I'd set up an internet community and silently indoctrinate it's members about the superiority of alien technology, culture and power. I'd use, say interactive computer programs.

There are tons of exciting events happening in the Universe like supernova's, the birth of a star, black holes etc. Why would I waste my time conquering Earth when I can observe the wonders of the Universe?
