Half-life 2 is my favorite FPS game ever created. I think you all have poor taste :p
It had great characters, great level design, amazing atmosphere and variation AND an actual story that was well written. The shooting mechanics were solid, the enemies were fun to kill and it was just a great game.

If you played it on a console... I pity you for having to suffer through a game that really shouldn't have been ported. Joysticks do this game no justice.
first off, the story was a massive meh, i was just running around shooting stuff, the physics were decent, but everything else was so boring, i fell asleep playing it, and i played it on pc first then played it on console at a friends, so i have no idea where you pc elitists are getting your "zomg better on pc, so much different?!@?!", its average, if that, i prefer other valve games, and even then they aren't the godliest games around

p.s. playing with joysticks? a complete pc fanboy, just because you can't use them doesn't mean they are bad, mouse has accuracy, sure, use the damn thing all the time, but doesn't mean it is better
yep I'm a PC fanboy which is why I have a closet full of console games since 1986 and 7 consoles hooked up to my TV. The console port of HL2 was just not very good - it's like saying starcraft on the N64 was just as good as the PC version. I play EVERYTHING and it's my opinion, as someone who played HL2 on both the PC and the xbox that the PC version was just far better.

Just like I wouldn't recommend anyone play DMC3 on the PC - it's just a bad port. The same reason I recommend everyone play HL2 on the PC - the xbox version was not a good port.

You got it! I'm a heathen.

Seriously, though, this post has been the most thoughtful one that I've seen yet. While I'm still not swayed on my standpoint, it's nice when someone can intelligently discuss a point rather than fanboisqueal about how Valve is awesome and I'm just dumb. Thanks for your input!
I try to be a fanboy while maintaining an intelligent discussion. :p
The problem with most people bashing the game is that they see their side of the world and their ideal FPS type. HL promotes some good game design values and is actually one of the rare games that have that kind of appeal. I was writing that for about an hour because I like to show people how it's not only their opinion that matters. (or at least that's how I felt with most HL haters out there and the whole 'quality discussion' aspect fell on deaf ears and, therefore, straight into water) Mostly the reason I constructed these points long ago in my head and kept them there until this very moment.

Where's Portal, Mass Effect, Bioshock, or any of the Call of Duties for that matter? Still, this list wasn't as bad as I thought. I can forgive all of the ones I just mentioned not being there for the simple fact that Halo wasn't on the list. Popularity does not equal quality. Barely anybody played Colossus, comparatively, and it deserves its spot. This is the same reason Warcraft's not on the list. Just because millions are addicted to it does not make it quality. It's like saying crack is better than aged Scotch. Roleplaying games suffer from a certain repetition syndrome with gameplay, which most make up for with above-average storytelling. Warcraft's storyline was played out when they were still RTS's. And I must say Uncharted seems like a fad pick, because they had to pick something recent or admit that gaming is going downhill.

The HL2 story was not "lame".

And there's no Mafia on the list, which makes it totally worthless - its redeemed by the inclusion of KotOR though.

I love that game beyond belief.
your right there's no Mafia game...

i dont believe control setups can "make or break" a game, as which you seemed to make it out tob e earlier, which is what i was pointing out there, i've played many games for multiple platforms, and just because i prefer it on one system doesn't mean it is "bad" on other systems

Considering it's IGN I'm surprised halo isn't on there. But Mario Galaxy? Why is that there? New Super Mario Brothers sold better and just IS better. Mass Effect should be up there, especially considering how they're actually doing the series right by continuing where your past events actually matter.

I didn't mind their game list much I appreciated seeing KOTOR get some love, but their movie list was a joke.

Maybe you're right and I can't use a joystick worth a damn, but I find them slower when compared to a mouse. I don't feel I'm really worse than the average gamer when playing a 1st or 3rd person shooter with a controller, but maybe I secretly suck ass and just never knew. Regardless, it wasn't just using a controller that I felt hurt, it was just... I don't really know. Remember, I played the game on the XBOX not the xbox360 - there was an xbox release. So the textures were just mudded, the resolution was awful (compared to my usual 1920x1080) and it just... I don't know, it wasn't the same experience. When it release on the PC in 2004 I was completely floored.

The graphics were some of the best I'd ever seen, it was optimized AMAZINGLY and ran fantastic (maxed out) even on my not so new PC at the time. I guess I can't really cite the story, you found it "meh" and I liked it, so I suppose that's just subjectivity for you. I supposed I really liked the Orwellian setting as future dystopias are a favorite of mine in literature.

So, uh, even though a mouse is more accurate than an analogue stick, that doesn't make it better for aiming at targets? That statement basically amounts to "even though it's better, it's not better".
thats not really what i was going for, but why wouldn't everyone just use keyboard and mouse then? its obviously not that hard to just have a port for them to hook up, so why not?? why not use keyboard and mouse at every single tournament gaming wise?

Swap God of War for Baldur's Gate II/Diablo 2/Planetscape and you've got a deal. Oh, and erase Okami, do not care. Everything else deserves the place on the list. Maybe except for Uncharted 2... Mass Effect could take that spot. Or Dragon Age.

wow may have the most blah blah blah but its graphics are old and out dated. also its basicly the same thing over and over but unlike most games that keep you interested all the way through. i got bored after i got 5 levels away from lvl 70. half life 2 was a great game and when the episodes came out they were awsome although im still waiting for episode 3 ><

I Think it's a bad way of making a list.... I personally think 2009 had a heap of better games than anything in the 2 years prior.

I find it odd however that one of the Halo's isnt there?
Not that it should be though

And was Okami really THAT great?

I don't think Mario Galaxy should be on that list

Other than that it makes sense

So to keep on topic for a bit, I'll say something about that list.(and mostly because the author/philosopher in me wants to write a lot)
so...
10. Uncharted 2 (2009)
9. Battlefield 1942 (2002)
8. Okami (2006)
7. Fallout 3 (2008)
6. Counterstrike (2000)
5. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
4. GTA III (2001)
3. Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic (2003)
2. Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
1. Half-Life 2 (2004)
-I haven't played KOTOR and Shadow of the Colossus, but something just tells me they're too high on the list.
-GTA3 defined sandbox and is therefore *cursed* to have a 4th place. It's a groundbreaking game, revolutionary and bar-setting for the genre. (if not the very start of it)
-Super Mario Galaxy... Seriously? What's so special about it? It can't be THAT fun and THAT good. It's only a platformer with gravitational fields for crying out loud. I might be looking at it from my own stubborn side, though...
-Counter Strike? Big fat NO! Why would it end up on the top 10? It's not the best and most played multiplayer game. It's completely unlikable and not even remotely fun(unlike TF2). Every time I try to play it it makes me vomit nerd rage all over the servers.
-Fallout 3 is a pretty good choice. It wasn't that world-changing on the gameplay aspect, aside from combining RPG with FPS, rather than other way around. On the other hand it was very immersive and atmospheric while maintaining a larger world with enough interesting places and people to find.
-Okami...Just what the hell was that? I didn't really catch any of it.
-BF1942 remains one of my favorite older online FPS games, I don't really need to explain that one, do I?
-Uncharted 2... I haven't played it. There's probably a gem somewhere out there to replace this one, it just takes more effort to find it. IGN are commercialized bastards anyway and this list is to be taken seriously as much as I'm a professional game reviewer. (Which means definitely NOT in case you aren't sure :p)

COD 1 I find was super epic with the first Russian levels although it seemed like the first bit with enemy at the gate. Though but WOW has perfected the MMO so it deserves to be on the top 10. they should of had BF2 also that was the game that went WW2-modern now that Cod has done it and so has MOA is planning on doing.

I'm pretty sure every player at a competitive tourney would use M&KB in a PC FPS. If you're not competitive, then it's not such an issue. Some people find controllers more comfortable, and will happily forgo the edge afforded by a mouse. Controllers obviously are a better fit for certain genres (think DMC), and on a console, there may not be a viable option. All I'm saying is that, for aiming at targets on a pseudo-3D plane, a mouse is simply superior. Doesn't mean you have to use one, though.

Notably missing is World of Warcraft. Someone fucked up; it's the most successful, most widely-played, most lucrative online game *of all time.* Think about this: it came out maybe six years ago, and STILL over 12 million people actively play it. I dare you to find me a higher credential. Everyone was apparently busy blowing Gordon Freeman in 2004, though, so he beat WoW.
FANBOY!!!!!!!!!!

Just becuase it makes a lot of moeny doesn't make it good.
