I prefer Engineer-like classes (or Support if it's a fantasy game) who can build structures and deploy turrets (favorite example: the Engineer / Constructor classes from ET:QW)
I typically find myself drawn to the rogue archetype. But what I REALLY love is a blend of arcane and martial characters. An acrobatic and sneaky magic user, for example, or an arcane warrior of some kind.
If it's a game, I'm usually left with very little to go on. If it's a table top RPG, I typically end up blending multiple classes together.
I'll usually be the charasmatic one, who talks his way out of trouble and into the NPC's hearts. also, i'll spread a little healing around if needs be. Yeah, that's right, I'm a mother-flipping bard.
If I can, I like to play as a character who is able to attack quickly multiple times with melee weapons. This usually ends up being like a rogue character, though if I could attack multiple times quickly with something other than daggers and knives, I would.
I take the support role. I like to be needed, and it gives me more of a purpose and reason to be accepted into groups. Usually that means Healing, of course.
In the case of solo-ing, I'll take the stealth or tactical role. I'm not a fan of brute force, it seems so...straight forward.
Back in my MMORPG days I was always a mage. Hanging back from the danger and dealing plenty of damage to a large group of people (depending on the speciality, I prefer being a frost mage personally).
I always play as a mage. When you have the option to annihilate your opponent with fireballs, summons and all manner of reality-warping trickery, why even bother with a sword?
Stealth, Ranged(sniper), Hit and Run, those kind of things. The type of gameplay it provides (given, the stealth system works properly etc.) usually provides the most excitement.
I prefer ranged characters ? either mages or another class with ranged attacks. Although, I do prefer when I can still race in and smack the crap out of the monster with some decent melee attacks if I run out of mana/TP/whatever. That's for standard RPGs o JRPGs, for other games I prefer stealth and remaining as a ranged class.
