I'm going to blame the parents, the government, horror films, video games and Darwin. The usual suspects. And for the first time, I am going to utter this phrase without irony, "What is the world coming to?"

More seriously, in cases of violent crime, children should be tried as adults. They are obviously going to be a lasting danger to society and so should not be allowed to go free until a panel of psychiatrists deem that they are no longer a threat.

EDIT: Oh, and they should be sterilised. I'm not joking about that either. There is no way in hell these boys are going to bring up children that are not going to also be psychopaths. Preventing them from breeding is in the public interest.

Not as much as you would think. In Portugal about 20 years ago they instituted the death penalty for a number of crimes ranging from murder to drugs. its over all impact on crime rate? 0%

Now with punishment, there is a 89% recidivism rate. only 11% of people who go into the system and come back out, stay out.
this can be blamed on the fact that in America, most prisons are run by p[rivate corporations who make around 65k/year per inmate. its not in the best interest of the company to rehabilitate inmates.

Well, to be honest, I'm not really interested in rehabilitating people as much as I am in removing them.

I'm a little annoyed with how.... eager many of you are to see them all die. Even going so far as to describe the method you want to see them killed. It's really easy to make claims when you've never studied basic psychology and no little about the human mind, and your only perspective on therapy is a leather couch and some prozac. I think it's important to understand why this happened, to learn how it can be prevented more effectively. It can effect regulations, make it easier for people to report this kind of child abuse.

But no, they are incurable! I know, I saw it in a movie once with this crazy guy! Lets shoot him in town square, it'll be a deterrant to.... abused children who are unable to comprehend life and death!

Unfortunately, if justice 'cross the Atlantic works at all like it does in Canada, they'll get a slap on the wrist and then be sent on their merry way.

It's not video games, if you go and do something in a video game then your seriously messed up. I'm a normal kid and i play video games. I don't kill people. If those kids played games then their PARENTS should of told them right from wrong and that its not real.

Why is it that people don't bat an eyelid when dozens of rabid dogs or diseased livestock are put down, but when the same punishment is so much as suggested for a truly evil person then damn do-gooders will say "you are a sick freak"?

And as some one reading it, I think it's wrong that anyone would do that to another human being. No I'm not doing it myself and I don't know what was going through their heads at the time. In my opinion I think what those children did was horrific and it's a good thing they've been jailed.

Do-gooders? You read about something in the paper and are demanding death. You've never studied it or made any attempt to understand it, other than heresay and some cynical opinion you've formed after reading the news too many times. Your opinion isn't based on any sort of fact or evidence, you just want to see someone die. I'd prefer the incident to be investigated and a judgement to be reached after everything is known, you've already decided death.

For the record, yes, they should probably be removed from society and go to a mental health institution as they are most certainly not sane.

I'm sorry about my views, much like these freak kids it was the way I was brought up. I had firm boundaries about right and wrong and I just naturally have a hatred for those who knowingly cause huge amounts of physically and psychological pain on other innocent human beings. I believe that people who sexually abuse and physically abuse others on numerous occassions have forfeited the right to a normal life. Perhaps my views are contradictory, I think that those who cause death and misery deserve death and misery. I think these kids deserve a taste of their own medicine. Sorry if my views offend you.
