As the title says, our oh so smart government in Australia is now going to start filtering websites from our searches. Couple this with our no R18+ policy for games (which all here know about, though they just started taking peoples views on this) sometimes i really, really hate this country and the old fogeys running the show.
Sorry if this doesn't make to much sense, i don't do very well with explaining things sometimes. So read the article, post your views or don't. Just thought people should know.

Edit 1: If you are so inclined, go to the following website and fill it out, it may not do much as they have already decided that the filter is going ahead, but it can't hurt:

Edit 2: More info on the clean feed, http://nocleanfeed.com/
We already have a filter on our internet...it just isnt a very good one.

But yeah the announced this ages ago, it will slow down our interent alot but australian hackers have already said that this so called filter is going to be easy to get around (even those people without half a brain)
This is so stupid though, this place is run by those mothers like in the simpsons "some pleaase think of the children" and everyone nods and goes "so be it"....
It was proposed ages ago, it was just fully launched recently.

I don't get it. How did a colony of convicts become so puritan, when a colony of Puritans became known for their excess and decadence [America]?
we got bored of puritanism, and some of the Australians forgot how much fun it was...

I feel for the Aussies here. From what I can figure you basically have two options, since the tenets of democracy don't work in your country, see Michael Atkinson, you can either just let them censor your internet or you can get off your beaches/stop going to work/school/sitting around playing video games and protest your government. Get your asses up the capital building or whatever you have in Aussie-land and tell them you will not eat until they stop censoring your internet, give you a +18 rating and start treating you like adults. Fuck I know that doing nothing about anything is convenient but in the words of a great man "this shit will not stand". Seriously.

Time to move to Canada?

Pros
Less Racism, Less violence (even though they have guns), free healthcare, more snow, next to America but not America.

Cons
No more sunny beaches or crocodiles. People can't understand your southern accent (geddit?)
No more surfing

Great, I am planning on moving to aus.

Your government is meant to work for you, do something about it, tie yourselves to stuff, make some witty signs and chant spiffy slogans.

It's alot better than sitting on a forum, moaning about how bad the government is, no body is going to do it for you, etc etc etc.

eh, although i'm pissed about this, i'm not concerned that it will directly affect my activities. at this stage the filter isn't going to be doing deep packet inspection, so i can keep torrenting it up. its just annoying that its even an issue at all.

Sometimes I really enjoy living in America, no matter how much trash people talk about it.

This is one of those times.
You've still got GM food up the wazoo and doctors charging you for the privilege not to die.
Not to mention that your country's farming style results in there being one type of apple, one type of lemon, basically, stripping away biodiversity in the name of profit.

But, these are repairable things, just as internet censorship (which I did believe was impossible).
Every place has problems. Not every place has stripped away the essence of what makes The Internet so great: the complete and utter freedom to express oneself without censorship.

Almost every problem is repairable, but at least in the US we aren't constantly trying to make things worse for adults who enjoy electronic entertainment.

Because time makes fools of us all and if you live long enough you will become that which you hate.

OT: Well, yet another reason not to visit Australia: essentially Chinese internet.

I just feel that being censored is less important than being charged to not die, getting cancer from GM food or even losing biodiversity because "the market" demands a uniform cash crop.

Ah, but enough of me derailing the thread:

Australia, The Fascist Years.
Mussolini would be proud!

hey, maybe this will work and it'll be fixed only to block sites with illegal content...and other dangerous sites of our glorious and all knowing government. Then once thats done they can start censoring movies, books...hell, why not just take control of the media. then our lives can be free of bad influences.

and maybe i'll go sit in the corner and cry

(P.S. excuse the slippery slope fallacy, it won't go that bad but my enter score fell just short of what i needed and im in a shit mood :(....i need a hug...)
*Hugs*

I have to say, even though our P.M. is a robot and his ministers largely incompetent, thank god I live in Canada.

First video games and now the internet. Australia's government must really hate people who are under 40.

I don't like this business of not being clear on what gets blocked. Sounds like they can pull whatever strings they want and say: "Well, we never said we wouldn't block those sites."

Eh, this is just ignorance at its worst. This won't bode well for anyone, but I am reluctantly optimistic that they will only block the illegal things that are actually harmful. Then again I hope this all blows up in their faces and then Atkinson gets the shaft out of it. He seems the right scapegoat, all things considered. The decision is soon reversed after and everyone continues acting like it never happened, well the politicians will act that way... the people will remember.
