The wonderful thing is this doesn't even affect people who follow the law, so whats it all in aid of?

Blacklists; Armed police raiding Bookstores for violating censorship laws; illegal treatment of refugees and any citizen who looks like a refugee. Soon we remove all synonyms and antonyms, then we'll just need to re-educate all those pesky undesirables because thats the kind of place we want!

Technology should exsist to help liberate people, not tighten the chains about their neck.
In four years time (next election) Labor (siting party) will not receve my vote.

And this is why you NEVER and I mean NEVER vote labour.

Whenever a government tries to take something away from its people it comes back very soon.
See prohibition in America.

About half of the sites on the list were not related to child porn and included...websites of fringe religions such as satanic sites, fetish sites, Christian sites, the website of a tour operator and even a Queensland dentist.
It's official. The Australian government puts Christians in the same category as Satanics...

Seriously, Australia has been known as a country many in the rest of the free world admire and respect, but I can see this changing rapidly.

The fact that its being billed as "PROTEKT THE KIDS! LOL!" really makes me want to kill something, if that even was the case (which it obviously isn't) it'd be pointless, web explorers come with their own maturity ban. And seriously, what kid searches for "beastiality please."

I'm so glad I live in the UK at times like this.
Fuck the children.

Things started going belly up after Steve Irwin bought it, he would have sorted this shit out - with alligators and bears no less.

Seriously however, i dare say there will be more than a few hacks around this if it ever does go live. I can't see it being that easy to control the internet.

We were living in the golden age of the internet. But already content is being blocked and corporations are learning how to control it. It was fun while it lasted. Be sure to tell your children that back in your day the internet was like the wild west, before the railroad came.

All the cool stuff will be pushed further and further underground. Hopefully the transformation toward corporate/government control won't be complete for another 10-20 years though.

also we only have to wait until 2011 for a new PM who will fix this.
I highly doubt that Abbott will have it removed or even try. I have a feeling that if this isn't a major reason for the Liberal Party (or any other party) being elected than it will not be removed. No party is going to bring this up as an argument for their election, you can't argue for the availability of child porn and other websites and hope to get elected. While a lot of Internet savvy folks, or even people with a simple understanding of the net, will understand why this plan fails and people that pay attention will see that this is censorship, most people will still be concerned with 'think of the children' or not even be aware of this mess. I foresee the next election concerning itself with Climate Change and Jobs more than anything else.

Oh ho ho ho, I find this amusing and sad at the same time. Amusing because well... it was not long ago the Australian government was basically whining about the Chinese government censoring things and now look at what they are doing?!

Sad because... well do I really need to say?!

At least I'll have my degree by the time it comes into effect, then hello any other country that still supports true freedom.

Australia is rapidly turning into a fascist state and I'll be damned if I'll swallow that load of horse shit. Rudd needs to ditch this or get his arse tossed out by the Governor General.
