Dragon Age is a good game if you liked any of the KOTOR games. If you hadn't played those then if you like RPGs whose combat play somewhat like JRPGs, but more streamlined and almost as if they were in real time. I haven't played a proper JRPG in a while, so I could be off, but that's that.
If you don't mind the game not creating a universe for you, it should be great. I loved it, but I personally thought that the universe didn't stick out enough to me to make me think about it that hard. Games that created universes for me include Half-Life 2, Oblivion, Morrowind, Halo, Mass Effect, and many others. Though I have no problem with the "standard fantasy setting", Dragon Age did not create a universe for me. I hardly ever felt myself imagining things about the game when I wasn't playing it. I'm not saying the universe is bad, or that it's even overused, I just wasn't feeling the soul of it.
But it plays well, it's full of all kinds of fun stuff, and it's only $30. You might as well get it now, so that if you like it, it will only be a little while until the next one comes out. Then you can continue with the setting fresh in your head.
