Is it cheating?

Having a heated debate with a fellow Escapist regarding MW2, I thought I'd ask your opinion on this. Is it cheating to use the knife, a tertiary weapon, as your main weapon, or is it a legitimate strategy? I was on the side saying that it isn't cheating, and just like camping, it's doing what works. Just because it's a tertiary weapon doesn't mean you're allowed to use it your way. That's like saying you're not allowed to use it cause you could have killed the enemy with a gun instead. Otherwise the developers wouldn't have made it so you can mix the perks to become a fast running knife lover. Anyway, give me your viewpoint. And please, no flaming.

EDIT: Also, as the debate went on, the subject came to the Commando "glitch" of how you teleport when you stab, part of the whole "increased melee distance" thing. While it is true that it sometimes looks like you're basically passing light-speed, I've never encountered that a shotgun couldn't simply mow me down anyways.

And if the knife is so overpowered, I doubt they would give the opportunity to make it even more overpowered through the Tactical Knife attachment.

To me if a game lets you do it, it's not cheating. Simple as that. The strategy that you mention in the OP I wouldn't call cheating.

Eh I would have thought you would be at a complete disadvantage using the knife so I don't see how it's cheating. If camping is involved with it though I would consider it to be unfair play.

Nah you might as well.

From my experience, knives are fun in shooting games.

Yeah, but some games let you enter cheat codes as well. I think the question is more whether or not you're considered a douche when doing it. Just play the game as it's meant to be played. The guns aren't there for nothing, knife is a tertiary weapon for a reason.

If it's put in the game, it's not cheating, end of. It's clever exploitation.

none of this is cheating, while the camping thing is unfair and noobish becuase usually if you camp then you dont have the skill to go find your own kill......while i dont care if a sniper camps becuase seriously...thats what sniping is.i also dont care if the team is camping becuase an AC130 or Chopper Gunner is out on the feild and they dont want to be blown up by it.

It may not be cheating - but thanks to knife's one hit kill, it's pretty annoying. When knife uses slash animation instead of stab animation, it's also wall-bangingly illogical. How can you kill a guy in a bulletproof vest by slashing a knife across said vest one time?! If it took two knife stabs in the front, or if it used a lightsaber instead of a knife, i wouldn't mind it at all.

If the game itself calls it cheating, then it's cheating. If it's a glitch, then it's cheating in multiplayer, not necessarily so in single-player. If it's something like camping or using the knife as a main weapon, as the OP said, then it's fine and is a legitimate strategy. That's just how it goes, as far as I'm concerned.

I always view cheating as playing the game in a way it is not meant to be played. In singleplayer this line is more hazy. If you have fun playing the game the way you do it is fine. I mean, you play games for fun, right? However, in multiplayer you have a responsibility towards others. You play with others and they have a right to have good gaming experience too. Other people might expect you to play a game a certain way, and if you don't, you're letting others down. I would call this cheating as well.

None of the abilities in MW2 are cheating, just varying levels of retardation are required to use some of them.

Thumper, inbuilt nade launchers and 1887 akimbo (followed by every other akimbo) being highest.

The knife, whilst horribly overpowered for what it is, atleast requires you to run right up to someone.

It's not cheating. The weapons and configurations are there, and you get to choose which way you want to play.
However, just because it's allowed doesn't mean it's fucking annoying.
