In real life, you'd die if you didn't camp.
That's why I think it's okay in games as well. I'm a bit of a roleplayer.
Real life isn't relevant, realism has always been attempted to be attached to this genre but I don't think it should be and if it were it would have to go all out, no game to date have I ever seen with realistic gun ballistics, there isn't a part in Call of Duty were you're adjusting the zero range of your sights and noting the ballistic curve because that would break gameplay and bore non-fanatics although it is something I would like to see if done well. In real life you don't get to respawn, in real life defibrillators don't recover bullet wounds. I understand the immersion which you could get from a realistic shooter but one like that just doesn't exist.

In MW2, Whenever I See A Camper, I Riot Shield Them To Death XD
Excellent strategy! I always find it fun to slowly move towards someone while holding the riot shield and laugh as they panic fire into the shield and hope they don't have Semtex!
I must ask, what is it that the Doctor is saying with that weird expression on your avatar? xD

If you cover the majority of these points

Do you have a sniper rifle? Yes
Will your actions change the entire outcome of the game? No
Are you defending something? Yes
Are you countersniping? Yes
Is your secondary weapon to be used as only a last resort or a pistol? Yes

If this was real life, would you just charge blindly into enemy territory without checking first?
Since when do campers check anything? They sit in corners like scolded dogs. They don't go anywhere so they obviously don't check for anything.

I don't know why people start a game if they're not going to play it.
Touche.
But Jetpacks would fix it.
Jetpacks fix anything.

3 occasions:

* when you're in a field and it looks like it might rain
* actual sniping
* you feel like being an asshole; ie upping your kill/death ratio without caring what anyone thinks of you.

the validity of the third one is entirely personal opinion.

If the fairness of a game depends on someone not using a certain tactic, then the gamemechanics are flawed. This does not mean that abusing it is fine - it just means that using the tactic shouldn't be giving one a generic advantage.

In the case of camping: Permanent camping (contrary to just using it as a surprise ambush), makes one predictable. Well designed gamemechanics allow to exploit such weaknesses. This also is true if the camper is protected by escorts. Some people lock down a room? Well, they're all sitting there nicely close to each other - i oughta be able to exploit that, right? Not? Who designed THAT?

It's good enough, but the camping where it's sitting in a corner picking off people, mostly out of luck and good positioning, is just abysmal and annoying as hell. If you're going to defend the objective then you might as well move to a new place to catch them off guard. It's a much more legitimate way than sitting around.

Camping's a legitimate strategy. It's just games like Call of Duty unbalance it and make it harder to kill them.

For example: Sniper in slot one, shotgun in slot two.
Camping is alright, but when the best strategy by far is to have a whole team camp, then its just not fun.

I miss the days of Arena shooters where camping means RESPAWNING IN 3...2..1..

Of course it's sometimes appropriate. In counter-strike the counter-terrorists have to guard the bomb places and wait for the Terrorists to come and try to plant the bomb. Of course this mostly only happens in clan wars. In public, people only just do what they want. Of course, if someone is only camping at a place without any strategic value and never comes out, it's senseless and annoying and it's really satisfying if you kill them.

I don't have a problem with camping. Personally, I'm more active when I defend an objective and look for where the enemy is coming from, but I have no problem with an ally (or enemy) staying inside the objective with a shotgun killing anyone that tries to get inside. Sure, it can be pissy and cheap, teamwork will always overcome it.

On another note, when I played FFXI, camping was how you leveled up. You would get a group, find a nice safe spot, and then have one person go out, find an enemy and bring them back to the camp. It was the most effective strategy to level up. And good team dynamics could make or break a group.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with the tactic but it's very annoying when there are 7 recons from your team all in the same old, predictable place on attack team, cheerfully providing the enemy team with kills and reducing your team's tickets. Conversely, it's rather nice when the enemy does it, as it's easy to snipe them off even with an SMG.
Similarly with tank camping when they're not doing anything useful like destroying an objective.

Camp all you want just know that people will now make it their mission to see that you do not get another kill from that location.
That's why real campers play hardcore, where there's no killcam! Bwahahahah!

Then I just use a gun with FMJ and shoot you where you least expect.
To that I can only say... I rarely camp alone^^

When I play MW2 its most of the time along with some clan-buddies and most of us camp.
We usually place ourselves so we cover each other.

Especially Skidrow is highly campable.

Oh, I forgot to OT - So: It's alright to camp, when sniping (not baseraping though, shame on you!) - as others have stated - but the thing where you practically lock yourself in a room and then wait for people to come on in, is not all right.
Nice Pic.

OT: There is a big difference between types of camping:
1. Objective Defender; you move around a bit, hiding close to, but not sitting on top of, the objective. Can also be done from afar with a sniper rifle (stay away from the windows...).
2. Spawncamper; Dumbarse tardcake sitting by the spawn with a semi-auto shotgun.
3. Ammo-box camping; if you can't aim for shit, and need a re-stock every 2 fucking minutes!
4. One-spot sniping; All in the name, but this is generally for those who deserve to be a sniper, with a good enough aim.
5. Objective Camping; sitting on top of the objective. This is why grenades were invented ;)
6. Door-side/stair/ladder camping; for those who love to imagine the look on the other guys face as your C4/shotgun goes off, splattering them all over the opposite wall in a mist of blood/guts/fire/all of the above.

While all of these are viable strategies, they will sooner or later get you some hate-mail, in order of most likely to least: 2, 6, 5, 3, 1, 4.

Reasons:
2: Stop being such a cowardly fuck and give me a chance to shoot back!
6: WTF HAPPENED!!!
5: NEWB! I'll just sneak through the back way and stick a block of C4 up your ass.
3: Don't bother playing if you need to do this.
1: An honest tactic, but you get many dickheads in real-war FPSs
4: Last because everyone respects a good sniper, especially since doing it with a mouse is hard enough but with two sticks for hands @_@.

It is always OK, people who take issue with it have to learn to deal with losing or find a new strategy.

Suck it up and play.

EDIT: Spawn camping is not cool, that's unfair. The camping I mean is finding a defensible position and using long range weapons on approaching enemies, not the "wait for spawn and shoot" kind.

Camping is always fine. It's people who don't know how to deal with camping that annoy me.

When defending an objective yes by all means, same goes with sniping form afar. But what most people use is cheap camping were they stay one place on the map and wait for you and t bag your body.
