I got it during the Steam Sale for $5. So far I'm finding it interesting. I haven't done multiplayer yet because I want to get used to the maps and gameplay first because it's a gametype I'm not as familiar with (MMOFPS, essentially). It doesn't have the same appeal that I got in Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 and I had WAY more fun with Arkham Asylum (which I also got at the Steam Sale). But that doesn't mean it's a terrible purchase.
As for the in-game items. I have no idea what the fuck those are about yet. But they seem expensive and why would I want to pay extra money for an in-game item (A SINGLE ITEM) when it may or may-not have added benefits to my gameplay? I don't know enough about em to deal with it.
In short... I guess get it if you want. And since we'd both be newbies at it, look my up on steam and we can play a round or two.
I'll give a short explanation with regards to the store (that's probably been repeated several times before I got here, but still)...
There's no real need to buy the weapons. You'll be handed items every so often as you play (along with a set of 3 of them for each class unlockable through achievements), along with a crafting and in-game trading system to further item collection, so with patience you'll be able to experience everything without needing to pay money. Hats are purely cosmetic (with the exception of set hats, which have an effect with the whole of a set), but somewhat rare, but again can be gained through trading or crafting (though only set hats have specific crafting blueprints).
Occasionally, a box will drop which will contain one of a list of items, which require a key from the store to open. The only possible content of the box that isn't available through item drops or crafting are the Unusual hats, which have one of several effects on them (and some of which, incidentally, make your head a nice, shiny target for Snipers). If you want to try for one, buy a key or see if you can trade for one, but otherwise trade the crate or just delete it. It's up to you.
...That was somewhat longer than intended... So yes - no real need to use the store at all. Now, there's a couple of Escapist servers in different parts of the world, I believe - to the battlefield with you.
EDIT: (sees the video above and can't help but paraphrase...)
On second thoughts, let us not go to the Escapist server. It is a silly place.
