It's not too late at all. I got it only a few weeks ago and I'm having a ton of fun with it. The learning curve may be a bit steeper than before now that there are so many experienced players, but it's still awesome.

Ya the game is ruined by now, its just another Korean MMO FPS with overpriced items etc it was better before now its just well...lets say if you pay you win

I assume you know about the item shop right?
I Disagree with that. Sure its harder to start the game than ever but its not like you have to buy the items and the drop rate is massive. An hours play a day normally squares you an item. Plus with trading and crafting your there in no time. Just don't care about hats. But then... you always start caring about hats! LMAO!

Here you go
http://www.teamfortress.com/mannconomy/item_sets/

If you look at the set perks you will see they are very broken
Oh ya the hats give no stats alone but when mixed with a set they can give +20% damage or you cannot be killed by head shots

And your a fat lair when you say the drop rate is massive it takes a month for a person to get a hat(random hat) and that's if they're lucky

Ya if you get into this game it cannot be played without paying extra
hey i love valve as much as the next guy but when they do evil i will point it out

I wish, I bought TF2 for Christmas and I only have 5 non-promotional items from 17 hours of play.

I had stopped playing TF2 for quite some time, and I went back yesterday and a lot has changed. This isn't bad seeing as it kept my attention and has drawn me back to collect more items, get better weapons, etc. It's a load of fun to play.

That's odd. I recently played with another brand new user and he got an item with every other death.

Maybe you should try dying more. :D

One thing, that set you mentioned is for the Sniper, and while it -does- grant immunity to head shots, this is somewhat balanced by it's requirements. The set bonus means you need to wear the entire set, which includes:

The Sydney Sleeper, a Sniper Rifle replacement that cannot perform headshots on it's own, but instead when charged causes the enemy to take damage as mini-crits for a short time from all enemy sources.

Darwin's Danger shield which provides +25% health.

And the Bushwacka, which deals full crits rather than mini-crits on a target affected by the Jarate or the above mentioned Sydney Sleeper, not to mention that imparts a 20% vulnerability to fire on the Sniper himself.

Most of the sets work on similar lines and do try to provide downsides to whatever functionality they have so as not to be merely 'upgrades' to the standard weapons, more that they provide different ways of playing for the player. Although arguably this doesn't often work very well, but it usually gets sorted when the devs do enough tweaking.

Secondly, for a new player, the first batch of unlocks, i.e. the standard class unlocks are obtained rather easily by simply completely a set number of achievements. Otherwise, while you can get a bad run of luck and not get any drops for a while, you aren't going to be crippled by not having those unlocks.

As for the cosmetic hats...there shouldn't really be such a fuss over them, but they don't do any harm either, they're just hats. It's just fun showing off a new one, and something a little special because they drop so infrequently. (Of course, some people get luckier with this than others.)

As to the OP. Jump right in. While there has been some progression, and I use the word loosely in terms of one-time events, the core game is pretty much the same, Capture the Flag, Payload (escort), Capture the Point, Arena. You shoot things, people get dead or gibbed and often both, you occasionally may get a new toy with which to blow people up differently or even a hat.

Seriously though, the people whining against all the inclusions remind me of all the dillweeds crying to have Vanilla WoW back :/

If you have a PC, definitely pick it up - especially if you have friends that play it on the PC.

If you're trying to get it for a console, just pass on by. I tried playing it a couple months back when I was bored at my friends house, he only had it on the 360, and it took like 10mins to find a match.

judging by valve release schedules thus far, a sequel to TF2 will come out sometime around the apocalypse. and plenty of people still play it these days (pc version)

As many have said before, It's never too late to join in on the fun. I just started about a month ago and I'm having a blast. The hardest part is finding a good community to join and that all depends on how you want to play the game.

Lots of the servers have different mods that can add or subtract from the fun. If your having trouble finding a good community that fits the bill just ask on the steam forums or possibly here as well.

Cheers,

-Kag

No, not really, some of my friends still play and hang out here at the Escapist servers. I hear they're pretty friendly to newcomers and casual gamers too so no big deal if you're just starting it. They're still releasing new items for it too so it's not dead yet by any means.

Get it, Play it, Ignore the folks who trade-spam.
That's what I did as I got the game (on disk) around late October (couldn't play it right there at the time, had to get LOTS of updates and the servers were bogged down with Scream Fortress updates and players), for the most part I play Sniper on 2fort on the 3FL (Australian) servers.
No clans, just a set of servers run by a company who my ISP has a deal with that any data (particularly on Steam) that goes through the 3FL server doesn't affect my monthly bandwidth usage (about $100 AUD a month for 100GB (50GB between 9am & 1am Peak/50GB between 1am & 9am Off-Peak) of 8mbps/384kbps down/up ADSL 1 + landline. Internet and technology in general is damn EXPENSIVE by its nature here).

You have no idea what you're talking about. All weapons are SIDEGRADES and all weapons in the store are obtainable through other means.

OT: Buy it now and love it.

I wouldn'y say so. I bought it in the Steam sales the other and have so far enjoyed playing it. All I've seen so far of all the MMO stuff people always complain about is everyone else in the server wearing funny hats. Oh and items I've apparently found, but I don't give a shit about that so I won't touch it.

So no, go for it! It's a well crafted game. Probably because I never saw it how it used to be....ah well.

Also sniping is so easy, especially compared to games like BFBC2 ^_^

It's fine to come in late, you just have to put up with the humiliation of the Mercenary badge.

Oh, and there's people who spam trading. But, in my opinion, they're not as bad as the people who constantly complain about trading, the item shop, etc. The item shop isn't even that goddamn bad - if you can't craft it or find it randomly, you can't buy it. With the exception of the Map Stamps, but the proceeds go to community map makers.

My internet plan is with TPG (Perth person here) and I pay $60 AUD a month. I get 500 GB a month with 150 on peak and 350 off. It's ADSL2+ all the time unless one of them gets capped and goes down to 150 or so KB (I know the difference between kb and KB) up and down during whichever time period got capped.

Man you are getting ripped off. Then again it's not a land line deal which are actually cheaper. I hope you aren't with Optus. I hate them so much.
I'm with Westnet/iiNet (iiNet bought out Westnet a few years ago, but our billing and communications are still labelled as Westnet whilst the ISP info is iiNet), as they were the cheapest ADSL 1 option out here in Junee (~30 min from Wagga) where I could bundle phone ($29.95) and net ($69.95) for $100 a month, as there's issues with various pieces of hardware in the system here, primarily the exchange (bloody HELLstra) which can & does screw up (particularly after power issues and heavy rainage), either screwing our connection totally (no landline or net until exchange is reset and working), or screwing it enough we'd get better speed if using the mobile phones.

Until around October, our connection was 25/40 GB on 1536/256 kbps (after previously being 20/40 peak/off-peak for about 2.5-3 years), then Westnet obviously got some changes and bumped the bandwidth to 100/100GB (peak/off-peak) still on 1536/256 down/up for $69.95. Shortly after finding out about this, we did some looking around their site and found for $69.95 (still) per month, we could cut our bandwidth from 100/100GB to 50/50GB but boost our speed to 8160/384kbps (basically from 1.5/0.25 mbps down/up to 8/0.35 mbps down/up for half the bandwidth and the same price).
Guess what we did :D

For actual download speed comparisons, on the 1.5mbps I usually got 150-165 KB/sec. On this 8mbps I get 700-800 KB/sec when downloading from places like MegaUpload.
