 Who could say that the Fallout future sucks? It's awesome! Cool mutations, awesome 40-50's soundtrack! Whats not to like?
Being eaten by deathclaws, being eaten by Super Mutants, being eaten by cazadors, being eaten by radscorpions, being stung by radscorpions, being stung by cazadors, being shot by raiders, being shot by Super Mutants, being shot by robots, slowly dying of radiation poisoning, being gored by deathclaws, being eaten by mirelurks, being crucified by Caesar's Legion, being shot by fiends, being blown up by Powder Gangers, being mugged, being eaten by gamblers, being shot in the head and left to die in an unmarked grave outside a small town, being eaten by geckos, being eaten by giant ants, being burnt by fire geckos, being shot by Great Khans, being eaten by ghouls, being shot by ghouls, being eaten by wild dogs, being irradiated by ghouls, being shot by scavengers, being beaten to a bloody pulp by Nightkin, being blown up by mines, getting stuck in bear traps, being eaten by Nightstalkers, getting uncool mutations, as well as lots of other things.

These are things that are not to like.

The Killzone universe seems great for normal citizens outside of Hellgan... at least after the fist game.

Yes- in the Kirby series.

See? In the future, earth may have frozen over from a nuclear winter, but the remains of civilization motor on to make toys for the happy, adorable neighboring aliens!

Basically, to condense: Fallout universe is awesome, except everything's fucked.

EDIT: Wait, I got it! Flotilla's future sucks considerably less than our present!

Fallout

I guess the Metal Gear Solids' future doesn't seem bad for the general population. But I haven't played 4.

In Sonic CD, if you go back to the past [small] to play the shitty games that suck ass [/small] and destroy the Badnik machine, if you go into the future, the future will be nice, bright and clean, but if you go to the future first, then its pretty much Crapsack World.

Well, Mirror's Edge depicted a very clean and good looking city. Faith and her nifty band of thieves were all kinda assholes.

Well... Not really, no. That answers your question.

Here's, at least in my opinion, why this is the case:

Think of it this way. What would there be to do in a future which is good? Not a whole lot.

I'd challenge you to come up with an idea for a genuinely good platformer/RPG/whatever that isn't The Sims or something of the like which is set in the future which doesn't involve any problems, because that's basically what you're asking for.

You can't really have a great game with a fantastic storyline without having at least a bit of suck in it. Look at it as such, Fallout, One of the greatest series of games ever created, is about... Well... It's self-explanatory. Does that world suck balls? Yes, very much so. Is it fun? Yes, it really is.

Deus Ex, System Shock, Mass Effect, whatever you want. All fantastic games with well-driven storylines, but the world of the future which all of them depict is utter shit.

Try Startopia. Pretty old game by now, but still tons of fun in my opinion. Aside from stuff like the occasional plague outbreak or a wild animal tearing up your donut-shaped space station, it seems like a functioning and all-around pleasant future.

Mirror's Edge is not a futuristic game, it's "supposed" to be set in present day.
Well it was a few years in the future, but it was more of a keep walking and dont see wahts really going on in that city from what i understand.

Plain Sight is a future of suicide ninja robots jumping all over the place in an endless orgy of (what I think seems like) gleeful mass-robomurder.

Really, as far as futures go, there's been a lot worse.

Megaman Battle Network shows a rather positive future. Everything seems rather similar except with better internet.

And apparently an endless suply of things from the darkest reaches of the internet that are actively trying to kill everything in the real world.

Then again, it's still more or less a good future, even if surfing for porn would be really awkward.

After finishing Dead Space 2 (great game btw) I was wonder of how video game portrays the future, and sadly every single sci fi Video game I've played always tell us that the future will be a dark gloomy unpleasant time.

I mean seriously look at games like System Shock,Doom , Desus Ex, Halo, Crysis , Haze, Fallout and now Dead Space.

In all of those games the future is not pleasant, I know you will need a problem to solve in order to make a game but why not make beautiful future and make that problem threatens certain people at that time and not the whole world.

BUT, maybe there is a game where the future doesn't that I missed, help me Escapists is there any ?
You want a bright depiction of the future? Sorry about that, OP. I was under the influence that you wanted a fun game.

Most games are driven by conflict, one way or another. You know what isn't conducive to conflict? A happy, Utopian future. Dead Space wouldn't have existed if the oppressive government hadn't been trying to tamper with artifacts they didn't fully understand. Crysis 2 would be about a guy wasting the potential of a multi-million dollar suit of powered armor if it didn't have an alien invasion.

The funny thing about Halo, though, is that the future is pretty good. The only rather large problem is the alien invasion bent on humanity's destruction. And the point of having said invasion is so there can be an actual game.
Yeah. the Halo Universe is pretty good...

for everyone except all those people living in the two thirds of Africa and the entirety of Reach who died in a glassing. Also Captain Keyes and Noble Six.

I'm not sure if you're playing that straight or inverse...

But that situation doesn't "suck" for the everyman. It's not ideal, but it's not awful.

Whilst they are actively trying to kill people all they seem to manage is mildly annoying them or disrupting something. Seeing how they are always defeated by a ten year old kid they don't seem like that much of a threat anyway.

As for the porn, yeah it would be rather awkward with the Navi watching and judging you on every thing that you view
