Oh wow. [http://www.411mania.com/music/news/99234/Study-Finds-Beyonce,-Lil-Wayne-Fans-Score-Lower-On-Tests.htm]
Is the test absolutely right - that I don't know. But it certainly has some truth in it.

No.

Music, books, games, tv and film are all part of the same industry. The ENTERTAINMENT industry. As long as they entertain people then they have achieved their purpose. I challenge you to go out and find a piece of music that someone wouldn't enjoy. It's simply impossible.

Personaly, I think that anyone who limits themselves to one genre or excludes another because it is not a genre they like is really ignorant, there is much variety in all musical genres, you just need to find it, it isn't neccesaraly in the mainstream.

Yes, there is such thing as bad music.

Here are the parameters that are used to determine how music works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_theory

If the basic structure of a song is flawed, then that song is bad, personal taste has nothing to do with it.

I think everybody is going to have a genre preference, but great things can break out of the genre and be liked by everyone.

For example, I don't really like first person shooters, but Bioshock and System Shock 2 are two of my favorite games of all times.

I still prefer games that are not in first person, but I won't shut out a genre entirely.
I'm not saying people shouldn't have a preference, my personal preference lies firmly in punk. But just shutting out and refusing to listen to other genres (like most of my frinds do with my music) is just ignorant. Like you said, you can like FPS's but don't like most of the genre, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Yes there is. I have two examples:

The new Rammstein song, Pussy.
Anything by BrokeNCYDE.
I would agree with these two whilst also adding the band Freezepop and this new singer called La Roux.

Both are just ... terrible.

There is bad music, people can just like bad music sometimes. There are so many bands out there that just get together cause everybody knows a little something about their instruments (key word- little). They can compile a jaunty tune, or sample something that was already good to begin with, and THINK THEY ARE A BAND!! Nosirree! People will come see their shows because they are friends with them, or they happen to be at that particular venue anyway, etc. I know this is a bleak analysis of the topic, but if we can't call music bad, how will they be ostricised for their poor attempt at an otherwise rich media? I hate sitting through a shitty band before the real show starts! Nobody will tell them they suck though, and they can hide behind this "no bad music/ different strokes for different folks" idea until they realize NOBODY NEW IS COMING OUT TO THEIR SHOWS!!!

I guess the only true way to measure it is by genre concensus- get 100 metal fans to listen to your metal band and if 80 of they say they like it, THATS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!!! Chances are like 12 people will actually get behind it and buy a CD, so I guess CD sales should be an indication of good music. People have a funny way of denying this, but you are a band to make music for the people, so if nobodies buying it, you ain't got it! Sadly, whatever song/ album that was you were refering to does have good CD sales, argo I guess we have no choice but to call it good music. Also, if you have do describe what your band is in 3 words or more, its not good. "aww dude, were like pop, trance, Gypsy, back-ally, goth, death metal".

Also, you hate pop? Me to! We should hang out.

I listen to just about everything Country, Jazz, Techno, Rock, Pop, Jpop, Metal, Classical, Blues, ect... The only thing I can't stand is screaming at the mic and if they start to repeat the same lyrics more that 4 times in a row.

... or is it just music that you don't like?

It was something that I was thinking about today. In one of the rooms at school that I was in during break, someone was playing the song 'Sexy *****' by... someone. Akon, I think. Anyway, the lyrics include such gems as 'I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful!'. He then goes on to tediously repeat the words 'Sexy *****. Sexy *****.' Over and over again. Just after telling her that he wouldn't be disrespectful. Yeah. I realise that this could be a painful attempt at irony, but I realised that I couldn't listen to this crap for ages.

The thing that got me, though, was that people in the same room appeared to enjoying it. Actually enjoying this turd.mp3! 'Why can't they just listen to my music?', I thought? Then that led me thinking... if I put on an iPod with Modest Mouse or They Might be Giants playing would the people who enjoyed 'Sexy *****' think the same thing? 'God, this music is awful!'.

So, that leads me to my question: can any music be considered bad, or is it just not for you?

To a certain extent I agree, but then there is that certain kind of pop-rap/techno music that I absolutely loath. But, I've said a lot in my post, so, your go?
I'd say yes. Mainly because you can convince someone they like something that they don't.

On Penn and Teller they convinced various couples that different bottles of the very same tap water from the same garden hose were various fancy waters from parts of the world. They even got some folks to admit they tasted various touches in it.

That's why I think there can be bad music. Still it is bad for you (or me) but it is bad. Worst part is you don't even realize it is bad because of marketing and PR.

Just my 2 cents :).

I am pretty much a noob when it comes to music to be honest... Don't suppose you have a "morons guide to music genres"? Ever since things started having "-core" added to the end of it I have been lost.

I've found that many of my favorite songs fall under "rock, pop, trance".
I have a limited knowlege outside of punk and some dance music (the dance is due to GCSE music), it is often best to ignore genre and just think if you like something just look into it more. The only good use for genre is if you find a band you like then you can find similar sorts of music through places like last FM and Spotify.
