I hate most of the music that all my peers enjoy, but I won't go so far as to say it's bad, although some *cough* akon *cough* dizzee fucking rascal *ahem!*.... is just awful.

Here are the parameters that are used to determine how music works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_theory

If the basic structure of a song is flawed, then that song is bad, personal taste has nothing to do with it.
Nicely put.

See, this just goes to further my point. You don't like rap, so you say it is bad. My favorite band is Coheed and Cambria. Most people hate them and say that they are bad. How can I like them if their music is bad?

The thing is, their music is good in my opinion. Thats a huge keyword there: Opinion. Just like, to make your post true, it should read:

Just because you think something doesn't make it true.
How is it possible for them to dislike Coheed and Cambria? It's Nerd Rock at its finest!

Bad music does exist.
That's nice, but reasons and links?
One song which proves bad songs (in this case terrible songs) exist:

Worst. Song. Ever....Of all time.
...............
............

Agreed. I could only ever consider this song to be even half-decent is if I was very, very high.

This calls for some Frank Zappa:

"The Ultimate Rule ought to be: 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchin'; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty. The more your musical experience, the easier it is to define for yourself what you like and what you don't like. American radio listeners, raised on a diet of _____ (fill in the blank), have experienced a musical universe so small they cannot begin to know what they like."

That about sums about my ideas about music.

Hey something new on these boards: Someone badmouthing Americans! Shocking.

I respectfully disagree with Mr. Zappa. I think you could, hypothetically, have only ever heard one song and you would know whether you like it or not.

Edit: Although I do think some people could broaden their horizons a little.

Now, normally I would say that there isn't but... Yeah [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTAAYfGs2ZQ].

Although, I'm not sure if that qualifies as music...

Well, music has the 'job' of entertaining people. As long as it does that it's a matter of taste I guess. But I don't want to ruin the spirit of the topic, there are a few things I would really want to label as bad. The best example would be this song:
Completely unimaginative and pretty much rudimentary lyrics and a melody that just keeps on repeating itself ad nauseum. This song shows barely any musical skill and solely sells on sex. I cannot possibly call that good.

Technically speaking, yes, there is such a thing as "bad" music. If you look at it from the standpoint of someone who studies music, you see that there is a theory that shows what works, why it works, and why the things that sound horrible together don't work. "Bad" music isn't really a question of genres, but it's more of a technical thing that was forgotten long ago when people stopped studying music. I've been learning music and theories of music for yeas, so I can tell you, yes, there is such a thing.

As for is there bad music as in genre, that's all about opinion. Personally, I mostly listen to blues some genres of metal. I think the only thing that shouldn't count is rap since it's literally all the exact same beat with different lyrics. And yes, it's the exact same beat in every song ever. They only change the tempo, if they even do that. It's like how AD/DC got famous, but a bunch of their songs are the exact same thing instrumentally, but with new lyrics.
