... or is it just music that you don't like?

It was something that I was thinking about today. In one of the rooms at school that I was in during break, someone was playing the song 'Sexy *****' by... someone. Akon, I think. Anyway, the lyrics include such gems as 'I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful!'. He then goes on to tediously repeat the words 'Sexy *****. Sexy *****.' Over and over again. Just after telling her that he wouldn't be disrespectful. Yeah. I realise that this could be a painful attempt at irony, but I realised that I couldn't listen to this crap for ages.

The thing that got me, though, was that people in the same room appeared to enjoying it. Actually enjoying this turd.mp3! 'Why can't they just listen to my music?', I thought? Then that led me thinking... if I put on an iPod with Modest Mouse or They Might be Giants playing would the people who enjoyed 'Sexy *****' think the same thing? 'God, this music is awful!'.

So, that leads me to my question: can any music be considered bad, or is it just not for you?

To a certain extent I agree, but then there is that certain kind of pop-rap/techno music that I absolutely loath. But, I've said a lot in my post, so, your go?

Its just music you don't like. I for example hate metal and scream-o, but I like pop, rap, and techno.

Its not that its bad, its just that you don't like it.

Everyone likes a certain kind of music, and hates another. I know many people who love Kanye West, Jay-Z, etc. and cannot stand the music that I listen to. Bad is all a matter of opinion. So I guess your answer would be no.

There's "bad music" in the same sense that there can be "bad art". While you're free to do whatever the hell you want with music, some things can't be ignored, sans a few exceptions. If your song changes tempo every measure, every instrument plays on a different key, the singer sings outside his tessitura, everyone plays off-tempo, the chords are dissonant and there is no harmony whatsoever, then that is objectively bad music.

No we won't. Well know what you clearly don't like.

OT, I have to agree - there's no such thing as bad music, even BrokenCYDE counts. I'm allowed to beat the shit out of anyone that admits to liking it, though.

See, this just goes to further my point. You don't like rap, so you say it is bad. My favorite band is Coheed and Cambria. Most people hate them and say that they are bad. How can I like them if their music is bad?

The thing is, their music is good in my opinion. Thats a huge keyword there: Opinion. Just like, to make your post true, it should read:

Just because you think something doesn't make it true.

I'd say yes, (and this goes for movies & games too) but any art form that is created purely for the purpose of generating money with no meaning or thought is wrong and in a way bad. If anyone likes it fair enough but it's still wrong.

Funny you mention that. Normally I'd be inclined to agree, but in the last 2 days I've been listening to Outkast's Speakerboxx/ The Love Below.

I hate gangsta rap. This is rap, and I love it.

I would think that music consisting of the Armpit Tuba and the Butt Gazoo would be nothing BUT bad music, but that falls squarely into the "opinion" category.

All music is good in some ways and bad in others. It just depends what criteria you are measuring it on.

Is there such a thing as Bad Games? Is there such a thing as Bad Movies? If the answer is yes to any of those questions, it is the same for music...

I guess there must be people that preffers "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" over "Burnout Paradise" in the racing games genre... I guess.
