Good afternoon members of the escapist. I hope you're having a fine day.

Formalities over, So hey. I've hung around here for a while and I havn't really made an interesting thread. Perhaps I'll keep that streak going for a good while before my soul-seeing puppy sings a song that will end the world.

So, the Thread actually starts here.

I was out with my band-mates and we threw a piece of rubbish into someone else's bin. The owner of the house came outside and nagged our ear off about doing so, Better than littering I said. So my question is:

Have you ever tried to do something with good intention, but other people found it to be quite frowned upon or wrong?

Maybe a difficult question to answer, but I know what (some/most) of you are like. So here's to getting a barrage of interesting posts.

Anything I ever do for other people... I do it because I want friends and family to be happy, that makes me happy too. I never get a "thank you", and if there is just a little tiny bit of what I did that they can point out wasn't that great or "bad", they will. It pisses me the fuck off, cause it seems that everything I do in life I screw up!

*ahem* Oh happy day!

I have had the exact same thing happen to me, I just put an empty can in someones bin which was sitting out for the next day pick up. He saw me do it came out and started shouting at me.
I was also with a group of friends maybe that has something to do with it, worried you are "up to something"

Being nice to people doesn't pay off. Because the world is so full of pricks, everyone expects you to be one too, and treat you like one, even if you try to be nice.

I know, but everywhere I go, it seems to be true. In Holland, there's even a commercial which roughly translates to "how to deal with nice people".

I was happily dating a rather nice lass, having a good time. And then got a panicky email about how she had been ill recently and because she had not been with her current employer for the statutory 3 months that she wouldn't get enough income that month to cover the rent and she was terrified etc.

Me, ever the gallant knight, galloped to the rescue with a 300 quid bank transfer. It was a loan and although I knew better, being a Bachelor of Letters in Law, I was so dazzled by pussy that I didn't get it in writing. She was so happy. So grateful. So never seeing me again.

I finally got in touch via her sister (I knew where she lived of course but scenes on doorsteps are not clever) who seemed under the impression that I had been the villain of the piece.

I swore that was the last time I ever did a decent thing for anyone. But in all honesty not loved up to that as everyone deserves a clean slate (and Alison Frost, where ever you may be, I bailed your ass out of strife and you kicked me in the teeth for it, I doubt you changed. Hope you're proud).

helping people never works out in real life either they are ungreatfull or just dont like help
I've experienced that once. There's this one time that I opened a door for a lady, just out of respect - she was a good deal older than me and it was to my understanding that the young should revere the old to some extend. My reward was a firm slap across the face.

She blabbed some feminist nonsense and walked inside (it was a Wendy's, btw) - after pulling the door from my grip, closing it behind her. I stood there, half of my brain was frozen in dumbfound-ness, the other half wanted to demonstrate my favorite Smash Bros. move to her abdomen. She's lucky the former half won the reason battle by half-a-micron.

Being nice isn't worth it, sometimes.

Attitudes like yours are the reason for that. 'Everyone else is a bastard, why should I be nice?'

Anyway, being nice to people very often does pay off. Gratitude is one of the best rewards, and if they don't give that, well, maybe the next person will, or the next one.

My story is similar to this, except it was only £70, and she did eventually pay me back. But it was very late. And I wasn't even going out with her. Yeah yours is worse, but her sister is terrifying.

I once found a fanny pack in the supermarket and gave it to security. When I was done shopping with my girlfriend a security guard came up and asked if I was the one who found it. I said i did and then he said I took a lot of money from it. I almost punched him in the face for that but just told him to p*** off and went home.
Thats the last time I will return something I found.

I never said I acted like a bastard, I don't. I generally try to be nice to people, and they react to me as stated above. ;)

Please don't let that be true. Just because some guy was a dick shouldn't mean that you must in future pass up every opportunity to make someone's day by ensuring their wallet/phone/whatever gets back to them in one piece.

Good :)

Niceness tempered by assertiveness is the best way. Be kind, helpful and selfless, but don't be a doormat. I tried being a bastard for a while, it only resulted in making me unhappy and angry the whole time.

That's good to know.

I can guess how galling it must have been, though, to have tried to help like that and been treated like a thief.

I have tried to assist people who may not be aware my car is approaching by making the exhaust as loud as possible. This ensures that they will be well clear of the road by the time I drive past.

This doesn't sit too well with the neighbours, however.

Yelled at an infamous youtube troll who is now threatening to sue me. He has no case, but I am still worried about having to deal with the court procedures. I have the feeling it is a blind threat though.
