i think the idea behind it being "okay" to mock Christians, but no one else. (note, i think it should be acceptable to mock everyone-in good taste of course) is that for a long time in the western world, they were (and technically still are) the major world power. they controlled governments, schools, and were best known for repressing everyone who disagreed with them, and ordering thousands of mass murders and wars based solely on religious beliefs. but now christianity has lost much of its power in the world, and so mass laughter is the best way to get back at them for thousands of years of oppression without physically murdering hundreds of thousands of christians in revenge. it's the same with White males, they were the dominant people for so long that our first inclination is to mock them and very few people object.

You can mock anyone you want but mocking a set of beliefs that you don't know much about or hasn't caused you or anyone you know harm is distasteful and cruel. People who think that Christianity or any religion is the only one that is ok to mock are hypocrites. Also, Scientology is not a religion, religions tell people what they believe for free.

I thought it was clear that I was talking about Christians as a majority. Who said Christians are a minority? Did I really have to say "majorities vs. minorities" as opposed to the other way around? I don't think it matters, it's common knowledge that Christians are a majority. If you were confused by my wording I suppose I'll change it.
Then I'm confused by your point entirely... Original post was "ok to mock christian?"... So, why is it implied that it's ok to mock them...cause they're a majority...? shouldn't it be the other way around? ok to mock a minority...? Maybe I'm just not following your train of thought...
Yes, I was saying it would be ok to mock a majority over a minority. You think it would be considered more appropriate to mock a minority group but leave the majority untouched? The Christian majority is both usually in power over the mentioned minorities, and have committed some sort of crime or atrocity against the minority. So I would think it's more apropriate and safer to make fun of the majority than the minority, right? That "guilt" factor is also felt by a lot of other other people, who would agree that making jokes at the expense of Christians is safer than the various minorities that have been victimized by them at one point or another over the course of history.

Could you explain why you would think it should be the other way around, that it would be ok to mock a minority but not a majority? I don't see how that could possibly be more logical.

The better question is "Is it really ok to mock anyone regardless of religion or race or sex?"
My theories, if you're going to do that to someone be prepared for someone to eventually do it back.
Its this thing called equality and another called Karma.

For my two cents, I think it's okay to mock Christians. But only if everything else could also be mocked in good humour.

-isms only exist in people who believe they do. As they say, ignorance is bliss.
Agreed

there is a reason christians are mocked, its because they are a complete hypocrits, and more and more people are coming to realize how big of a joke christianity is.

Oh no you di'in't!

*snaps fingers*

Anyway, not pink...Maybe baby blue...You know, something with style. I mean, this is the internet- as you yourself said, sarcasm gets lost in it.....Yeah, baby blue will help.

On the topic, I like Monty Python's way of mockery, which many other people have mentioned here: mock Christianity all you want, but also mock anything else that you want, be it babies, space aliens, digestive biscuits, or Shiva. As long as you get a laugh out of it, you know? I'm not so much for the bitter mockery that lots of people display towards things.

If your grammar abilities are any indication, I would say you lack the proper knowledge to be able to succeed in this argument. Christianity is just as money hungry as Scientology. The reason you don't notice is because they have more followers. With Scientology, they don't have that many followers, so they take more money from them.

I'm a christian and I can usually take a joke about christianity, unless it's hateful, mocking, or downright insulting. I don't really think it's okay to mock or insult religions, race or anything like that, but jokes, I think, are different if they're the right kind and in somewhat good taste and not necessarily trying to be hurtful or offensive, and it's completely possible to disagree with someone on the basis of religion without mocking them or screaming in their face and being a blatant turd. I do notice, however, that it's more acceptable in general to insult or mock christianity than other faiths, but maybe it's just me. If I read a statement attempting to denounce religion in general, it's more usually aimed toward judeo-christian based faiths than say buddhism, or scientology. Most of the publicity that churches or religious groups are usually negative, and I think that might lead people to criticize or judge a religion on the whole instead of that one group, or person. Like those guys at the Westboro Baptist Church. They protest at soldiers' funerals, downright HATE gay people, and probably other bad stuff that I can't think of right now. They use bits and pieces of the bible to confirm they're actions, but contradict the bible on the whole when preaching hate and intolerance, but if someone sees those people on television or hears about them on the radio they might think, "Oh, those crazy christians", instead of, "Oh those crazy group of specific people that go to that specific church that aren't necessarily associated with everyone claiming to be of that particular faith". And the Crusades, which were supposedly done in the name of God, but that was just the church manipulating the gullibility of the nation in order to sate their hunger for power. Or the king, I don't really remember, it was something like that though. But the faith was used to justify it, and people don't look very kindly on that and so they blame it on the religion and the people associated with it instead of the instigators. The issue with the molestation and the Catholic church is probably something too. You see that, you think "Those sicko-bastards, I'm never going to church ever". I'm not excusing any of those actions, and I can see why people think it's more acceptable to criticize christianity than other religions when seeing crap like that. It's only been a few misguided people doing misguided things, but so much attention is being given to them, so all's you hear about is the crap people do instead of the good people do. Of course, you could just think it's stupid, I don't know. I'm just stating my opinion, and I'm not talking to anyone in particular.

(the following contains material that may be offensive to some readers, as well as sloppy spelling. Please not that this is for semi-humorous purposes)

Well, for one thing, what separates black jokes and jew jokes from christian jokes is that you can't choose not to be black. Not that there's anything wrong with being black. On average, Taller, more fit. Only downside is slightly increased chance of diabetes...

ahem, anyway. KKK guys get treated like crap because they're IN THE KKK! Admittedly, christians could choose not to be christian, but most people lack the willpower and clear thinking to break a lifetime of indoctrination.

Honestly, what pissess me off about the normal, sane christians is their apparent unwillingness to disown the aforementioned bible-thumpers. Serious, we atheists/secularists are getting very tired of having to fight against the fundies solo. Because your stupid religion that you dont really buy into anyway makes you, for some unfathomable reason, treat these people with more respect than they deserve (ie: any respect at all).

For one thing, alot of the fundies are right. If you dont disaprove of gays, or accept alot of modern science, you are being a bad christian. Its in the bible, after all. Technically, most christians are the wrong sort of christian. But, paradoxicaly, the only right sort of christian there is is a wrong christian.

All hail magical zombie man!

Seriously, the teachings of a certain revolutionary 1st-century philosopher are good enough on their own without your crazy blood/wine, raising the dead crap.

When the hell did Christians start getting made fun of? I live near Christians, and all I hear is Jewish, Muslim, black, and Catholic jokes.

But I fail to see how making jokes will start another Holocaust. That's actually extremely stupid to say. Jews suffered for thousands of years at the hands of Empires and religions, and Europeans treated them like crap. It's actually surprising how long it took genocide to occur for them. But saying Christians will suffer genocide because people make jokes about them makes me think you're irresponsible and unreasonable. Fanatical, as well.

I personally love to crack on everyone, being a non-denominational Christian myself. It seems odd to me that a religion that believes in the same God and reads the same book has such drastically differing beliefs.

Anyways, an awesome video someone linked me about the good wholesome Christians in the U.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI261VU0AZA . So much for tolerance. And common sense.

I don't tend to get down on christians. But it is a little rediculous to believe the world was made 10,000 years ago. (i know not all christians have this view.)

Personally I think it's okay to mock anyone. Hell, I think it should be made obligitory that every large organisation or social group should be mocked on a semi-regular basis, it keeps people on thier toes. And while I think that in some ways there are a lot of Christians out there who have it coming to them (I'm looking at you, Young Earth Creationists!), I agree in some respects with the OP, Christians do seem to slot into the same group as middle-class white males, in that you can say whatever you like about them and people will very rarely call you on it. I don't want it to stop, I just want to be able to make jokes about money hoarding, fried chicken eating black female jew whores without being branded a racist, sexist anti-semite. Is that really so much to ask?
