"Wait you said illegal in America right? I'm English, why should I care about what's sold in America! Come on Jack let's go ban those evil games!" Then as soon as he turns to exit my house I hit him over the head, knocking him unconcious, and stash him somwhere he can never do any harm. Can't have somebody like ruining gamer's fun now can we?
I was just about to yell at you :3

You're sitting in your home one day enjoying a relaxing game of when suddenly, the doorbell rings. You open the door to find none other than Jack Thompson. He explains that he's been re-barred and that he's about to start a trial which, if he won, would make M-rated video games illegal in the United States.

He needs your help.

Just as you're about to slam the door on his face, he explains that he has a proposition. He will give you just about anything you want. He says that he can rig the next mega millions lottery in your favor, guaranteeing that you win the massive three hundred million plus dollar prize. Or, he can give your career instant success thanks to "people he knows." Are you a writer? Your next novel is a bestseller. You could be the CEO of the company you work at. An actor? Congratulations, you've just landed the lead role in the biggest film production of all time. Think of Jack as a realistic genie who offers one wish.

To do this, you have to testify in front of the Supreme Court against video games. You need to publicly tell the world that video games made you a violent person, that they ruined your life, that it "changed" your friends, that you can't quit, and that you believe in anyone in support of video gaming is either corrupted by society or a liar.

If you do this, you're just one of Jack's line-up of several witnesses. His case is surprisingly strong. If you agree to testify, his case becomes a lot stronger. With you on board, Jack's victory becomes the most likely outcome. If you don't testify, then Jack's chances are seriously gutted.

In other words, if you do not testify:
Jack wins: 20%
Jack loses: 80%

If you do testify:
Jack wins: 80%
Jack loses: 20%

So, the question is... do you put basically the entire video game industry in jeopardy for the chance of a life time? What do you do?

Addendum: There is now way out. You can't testify, take the reward, and then recant. Also, Jack has found a way to make what he's doing completely legal, so you can't turn it around him. There are no loopholes.

EDIT: He's not lying to you. You'll both get what you want. This is entirely yes or no.

EDIT 3: Where's edit 2? Yeah.
yep, i can always buy Mature rated games when i am an adult, I don't play that much right now, and I'd love to be able to do courses that were I can make more of an impact on the world, I'd love it for a wish of mine to come true, and also, He might not win, so does it really matter/ After all, if I were able to do this, i could change the world, and i could get into a collage of my dreams/ my girlfriend could. So yes, i'd testify

I would invite him into my house, then instantly shoot him. When I am at the courts (as I undoubtedly will be), I'll claim that he showed up at my house a crazed madman and trying to attack me. I had no choice but to shoot him. There would be plenty of evidence to back me up, what with the trouble he has given the court system and the mad ranting he has done.

When I win the court case, I will sign with a publisher to write a book about my experiences and make millions selling it.

... What?

No I'm not a whore and would never betray my beliefs and ideals for some shiny door prizes.
But I would testify the he's buying his witnesses.

I'd refuse to testify.
Or ask him to give me 1k dollars for every cell of every organism of every planet in the universe.
Including the dead ones.
That is so outlandish that it would make him shut up and walk away.

Laugh and slam the door in his face, since it's apparently only M rated games and I live in Australia.
I know that whatever happens over there affects us over here, but honestly, there's no way he could win, since it would be a stifling breach of people's freedoms.

Well, do consider that the point of the hypothetical isn't that this could happen. The point is more about the morality than the situation. Would you run the high risk of sacrificing video game industry in addition to your personal integrity to have (just about) anything you wanted?
I'm not sure the moral question is so separate from the legal/political one. Warning signs always start flashing for me when people start wielding questionable thought experiments. In particular, the way you've set up the experiment is such that we have to assume there is no negative consequence of lying beyond the possible elimination of the games industry, which skews one's own moral compass in such situations, especially if you're a consequentialist.

As a fan of the categorical imperative it's difficult for me to divorce this particular problem from the simple question of whether you would sacrifice anything else that other people enjoy for an unlimited payoff. Would you sacrifice movies? Books? Chocolate? Soccer? Churches? It seems like you would need to have pretty good reasons to think that the things that you would sacrifice were importantly different from the things that you wouldn't. Because if your reasoning was "I like this but not that", then this strikes me as ethically irresponsible.

Maybe "many people like this while few people like that" is one possible option, but is mob rule the way to go? "This has Educational value" gives the air of totalitarianism, and "This is commercially successful" is complete free market capitalism. In any case, those answers tell you a lot about the person's political stance, and one's opinion with regards to the kind of state mechanisms you have and the openness to disrupting the integrity of an industry of development are not obviously divorced.

right, so if i testify, i reach the ultimate in my career of choice.
as that would be lawyer, i would testify against mature-rated games.
i would then use my legal team to argue that the high amount of under-20 players of M games, and the fact that maturity is variable between people and a non-solid concept, legally get the definition changed to teen.
then i would say Jack Thompson bribed and intimidated me with power to testify to his words, thus getting both of us charged with perjury. i would then be acquitted due to the intimidation to lie under oath, which invalidates the perjury law.
he gets arrested for intimidation, bribery and perjury; is permanently disbarred and is now a felon, the case gets thrown out as my testimony is now invalid (meaning his win rate is now 20% not 80%) and 12 year olds can now purchase former Ms in peace.

Note to the OP: this is not me going back on my testimony or a legal loophole. this is entirely legal, and relies on my disbelief in his ideas, which is true. it doesnt break any of your rules, because what he did was legal until i testified that i was intimidated.

fucking double-lawyered!

I'd help Jack out and my wish would be that he would lose the case.

Just to add insult to injury.

Not only do I slam the door in his face, but I make it quite clear I will fight the bill too.

I love games and the gaming industry. I'm not selling my opinions/soul for someone who is clearly out to destroy something I care about.

So you're basically saying that Jack Thompson is the devil and tempting you. I know that the guy is a blow-hard for trying to persecute video games but Jesus, aren't we taking it a little far by literally making him the devil here?

Anyways, Clearly this is not Jack Thompson but instead the devil or devil possessed Jack Thompson. I'm not in the mood to go to hell so I throw a cross at him like a shuriken yell "the power of Christ compels you" and slam the door in his face, then I call up my priest and tell him to come over and bless everything so the devil doesn't try to get in again.

Okay, Jack, here's what I want:

I do like money. A lot. I'm not very good at managing it, so it never seems like I have enough. And making a few million, for just a few hours work, is definitely a tempting offer. And let's not kid ourselves, any moron can give it up to play video games.

Well, I want to be that moron.

No, I wouldn't. Put simply, there's only one thing in this world that has ever been absolutely true to me, regardless of any and all of the shit that's gone down over the years: My beliefs and values.

Guy asks me to fuck over my values, the things which make me me, even just one of them, then no matter what he's offering, he can go piss up a rope.
