Sacrificing their lives to fix the mistakes of nuclear power and saving Eastern Japan from total annihilation.

I salute them.

I certainly hope this isn't truly the case.
Apparently that map is a hoax [http://nuclearfissionary.com/2011/03/15/beware-the-fake-fallout-map/].
I thought as much anyway.(Internet and all)
As I said I hoped it was not truly the case, however I thank you for the source confirming it isn't real. Though a real chart of the effects would be nice.

Now THAT is what I call a hero, not the soldier boys from the USA (no offense) where they are called heroes by default just because they are soldiers (many of which have done barbaric and cowardly things, but not all of them of course). You are no hero unless you can put yourself before others and be selfless.

Tsk that's just awful, poor people.

That company has some serious shit to make up for, this situation is getting worse and worse.
Oh, yeah, that company that made the earthquake/tsunami happen...
Yup that's what I was referring to. Good on you.

Being a bit more mature, is this necessary? If yes, that is really touching. That's the ultimate commitment, not seen since people were forced to join the army. Good comparison?
...Being forced to join the army is only ever one of three things

A. Irrelevant if you wanted to join it anyway
B. Idiocy, because it is in the same leauge as slavery or prostitution (depending on the pay)
C. Cowardice, because if you are not one of the two above, then you are coward for not giving them the royal fuck you.

Also, at least these guys are getting warned and have chosen to help, the poor liquidators at Chernobyl didn't even get told about the radiation if i remember correctly

They'll probably make a shitty movie about it a few years down the line...

I hope not.

But wow. Balls

In America, we wait for someone else to volunteer and then build a robot to do it. In Japan, they volunteer to effectively die in the line of duty. To paraphrase hundreds of posts so far, and to sound unfortunately exceedingly cliched, this is mindblowing and heart-wrenching in a way that just words don't quite convey.

Yet at the same time I have to wonder if there isn't some better way to do this--set up a stand or something for the hoses that keeps them pointed in basically the same direction, set them up, then be gone save occasional visits to monitor the situation? I mean not to diminish the incredible act these firefighters are taking, but part of me has to wonder if there is no better way to go about this. Maybe there is. Maybe there isn't.

Wonder if this happened in the US if we'd be lucky enough to have people like them. These guys all deserve first class tickets to Heaven for giving their lives that others may live.

That's the thing about being a hero in reality...you usually die doing that heroic thing. It takes a very brave person to make that kind of sacrifice.
