Is there no other way to do it? Surely there must be a way without them having to go through that sacrifice?
Some power companies are moving lines to the power plants; if they can get a power line in there successfully, they can power the coolant systems so that they won't need to do it manually anymore.

From what I understand, they have several groups of people going in, 15 minutes at a time. Who knows how long a break they get after each shift, but you know... Still highly dangerous.
Cheers for the info, good to know there's a chance it doesn't have to be so bad.

Actually the great tragedy is the scare tactics and straight up lying most of the foreign news is reporting, foreign to me anyway - I live in Tokyo. No no one is being sent to die, there is no risk of the reactors blowing up (not that kind of a reactor). The problem is rotating shift while keeping the workers exposed to less than 100mSv at a time, (thats the amount the human body safely flushes away with no ill effect). The international standard for "averting major nuclear escalation: 500 mSv" -the pubs are available. Japan has its own limits of 250 mSv total, and anyone exposure to more than 100 mSv/hour is not allowed back. So no, no one is dieing or being sent to their deaths. Is it a bad situation, yes, but so is trapped coal miners and all other activities designed to provide you a better life. So far no one has died from trying to stop a meltdown (which does not throw fallout into the air or other such nonsense) and more poeple have died making iphones than in these rescue efforts.

TL;DR News is lying to you.
Many people died during nuclear meltdowns.

There is a whole statue made for the fire fighters who died trying to fix the Nuclear power plant in Chernobyl.
I think DeeWiz means that fewer people have died trying to clean up the Japanese reactors, not reactors in general.

Thanks for setting the record straight DeeWiz.

I don't think there are any words I can say to this that would do them justice.

Just hope this is never forgotten.

True heroes, every single one of them.

The only thing I can say is that I truely hope they can keep that thing cooled until they restore the coolant system, so their sacrifice won't be in vain.

wow that is just amazing, compared to all the people that would take advantage of the chaos by looting shops (I heard there were no reports of that after the wreckage) in situations like that.. the Japanese are like saints, willing to die for their country, to give up seeing their family and friends, if you said this about any other race as a whole I would have trouble believing it.

I have great respect for the people of Japan, I wish the best for them and their families, and I hope Japan never has to endure a tragedy like this again.

That's one of the bravest and most inspirational things I've ever heard. Bless them for being so courageous, and best of luck to them and their families.

I really don't know what to post other than to say "thank you" to these men and I hope they can come back and not live in agony from radiation poisoning.

This brings me to tears. Crying a river over here.

I hope they go down in history for this. That's something very hardcore and to see so many men go into this knowing they're going to die in such a way is heartbreaking. They're all very brave.

Why can't all the civilised world send huge squadrons of planes over, loaded with water, and just bomb soak the shit out of the reactor? Do they seriously need humans there to give their lives? Surely a ton of planes would do a better, and safer, job?

"The needs of the many outweigh those of the few... And the one."

They deserve to have their names go down in the history books as the men who fought against a nuclear reactor for the sake of all.
