As I understand it spraying the thing with water is only a very temporary solution. They need to actually fix the thing before it blows, but from what I have been hearing that may not be possible.

If they were going into the plant to fix the problem that would be worth dying for, but spraying the thing with water isn't worth their lives. This has been going on for a while now, how many firefighters need to get hit with radiation before they let the thing blow or fix the problem? Dying in order to save people is noble, throwing your life away in order to buy another few days.. meh. At this point anyone who wanted to get out of the blast radious could have done so. It's tragic to think that they may have to let it blow, but let's be honest, Japan can handle a nuke going off inside it's borders.
The problem is, a meltdown would harm the entire world. Chernobyl was in Ukraine, and the radioactive fallout was still carried across the Atlantic to the US. We would have felt it, if not for a violent squall that reversed the winds and caused the particles to die in the waters. The blast radius of a nuclear weapon/reactor is nothing compared to even a Daisy Cutter- one has to take in not only blast, but fallout as well. They are literally buying the lives of the Japanese with every second of theirs.

God bless these men, may they somehow be saved from such a death.

Wow. That's amazing. My thoughts and prayers are with them. Although the chances may be slim, I hope they survive.

They win all the interwebs for their sacrifice. It's terrible that it had to come to this.

...

But if one good thing came from this earthquake, no more Naruto!

I once had literally zero faith in humanity before this.
Now this act of heroism, a mark of legendary selflessness and loyalty to their own people just brought a glimmer of hope. I am so blown away.

To me, even if their bodies may die, their souls will live on forever for these acts.
Because of this, they will never die in minds of their people and many, many more, across the globe, who they may have touched with their heroism.
This should make it into the world history books for the next generation of children to learn.
This should not be forgotten... ever...

One yes, not 55. There are 55 opperating plants in Japan. They are so close together that if one goes it COULD start a chain reaction. That IS worth giving you life to stop.

Good luck and God speed, but if Japan does not care for these families as National Heros I swear......

Modern day samurai.
They deserve to be named in history books.
Agreed.

Well nuclear technicians, you have these men dying to hold the line and buy you time. Use it. Don't let their sacrifice be in vain.

And I accept your future apology for being a pompous asshole obstinantly British.
As if im going to take that one sitting down.

You might have known this already, or neglected the facts at one point during your education on why your country is so great, but pompus assholery originated with the Brits and has been one of our more well defined traits scince the time when we used to own America, along with about 2/5ths of the plannet.

And i can apparently get away with it too, because im an evil sterotype in America.

I don't usually comment because most of the time I don't care about the topic so much I actually want to talk about it, lest of all on a forum.

But these People are better then me. What they are doing so selflessly is worthy of praise that they will most likely never hear, but the best I can do is simply remember them, to which I shall and I ask that everyone else who can or will does too.

I don't palm the word "Hero" off on someone who got injured in some war through being (Most likely) being themselves inadequate, otherwise unlucky, but these men ARE Heroes.

If any culture on this world has a sense of discipline and selfsacrifice, it's the japanese.
don't say that. human beings across the planet do the most insane things out of a sense of duty and love. These men took the leap because they are strong men. you disparage their commitment by cheapening it with a stereotype.

Oh, I cried. Anyone who reads that, and doesn't feel heart-wrenching emotion has no soul.

My heart goes out to these brave, selfless men and their families.

They are true heroes... no, they are more than that.

They are real life super heroes. God bless them.

A true sacrifice for their people, I hope they're remembered for a long time. I know I'll never be that brave.

wow, that is some amazing stuff right there. I hope that someday I can make a difference like they are making. Seriously, how many people get a chance to be an honest to god hero, yes its tragic but these men are now among those I idolize and aspire too.
