My gosh, that is so touching. There aren't words to describe it. May God bless those men. Man.

Seeing yourself slowly fall apart must be horrible, but seeing your loved ones see you fall apart must be worse. The brave thing was when they started helping right at the beginning, not after they'd been working to stop the reactor from going into meltdown after about a week.

They deserve more recognition than this though, it's a terrible way to go, and to do it willingly shows a great degree of personal strength.

Damn. Whenever I hear about things like that, it really strikes me. To be that brave; to have that level of selflessness within yourself; it's stunning. I honestly can't imagine what's going through the heads of those men right now, nor the pain they're enduring, but I sincerely wish them all the best.

This is probably one of the bravest things I've ever heard done.

Usually sob stories don't get to me, but this one hit me. Don't think I'd handle getting a call like that from my dad...

I know me saying I'm sorry for everyone involved on some forum doesn't do anything to help, but my thoughts are with them either way.
I know what you mean. I don't cry usually but I pretty much welled up over this story. I think its the bravery.

A number of Japanese firefighters have essentially volunteered for a suicide corps to save Japan. These men have volunteered to stay at the reactor site to continually douse it with water to keep it cool and stable. The radiation levels are so high that these poor men are expected to start dropping dead within the next few weeks, despite any radiation suits. Some have started losing their hair already.

These men called their families today and told them that they loved them, and that this was their final goodbye to their wives and children.

My heart goes out to these brave, brave men. Men that are giving their lives in order to save Japan. I can only imagine the trauma and despair that the families are going through.

In short, this thread is a memorial to the brave souls that have volunteered to die to save their country and loved ones.
These are the things that remind me that not all of humanity is like the stero-typical America

Im just a guy with a keyboard but godspeed to them all

Wow...that...well, I'm fighting back tears, which doesn't usually happen when I watch even the most harrowing news.

Best of luck to anyone involved, my heart and mind is with you
Oh, I cried. Anyone who reads that, and doesn't feel heart-wrenching emotion has no soul.
Absolutely. Nothing any of us will ever do will ever equal the bravery of these heroes.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
ok thats pretty hardcore, Ill give them the hero badge, this is probably the only time you will hear me ever call someone a hero either since I dont just hand that shit out, dying in combat, not heroic in any but the most extraordinarily circumstances but this, this is damn heroic

Humans are ready to give their lives to save other humans.

This, if nothing else, proves that there is hope for humanity.

"The few, the proud, the true heroes."
