I have played Oblivion and HATED IT! I have played some of Blizzards games like Diablo and stuff.. I could stand it to a point.. And name a few Bioware games i cant think of any off the top of my head..
I hated Oblivion too, i call bethesda game exploration game not RPG
Diablo is an Hack and slahs not a RPG eighter
Bioware RPG:
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (Not Baldur's Gate Allliance, they arent RPG eighter and not made by Bioware)
NEverWinter Night's
Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic
Jade Empire
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Dragon Age Origins
I liked Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate 1 i have it on the ps2 haha! Haven't played the rest..
Wrong Baldur's Gate there buddy. That is Dark Alliance which is a hack and slash. The real Baldur's Gate is on PC, and it's sequel Baldur's Gate II is also on PC.

Sounds like you haven't played any good RPGs. I love FF7 for example, I still don't want to call it an RPG, you don't get to make choices and play your own role. You are scripted and to me that just makes it an adventure/strategy game.

I know most people define RPG as leveling up, random number generators and getting better gear, but to me an RPG is PLAYING A ROLE. CHOICES.

I hated FF7... It was full of bugs.. Extremely over hyped game.. FF6 was 10-20X better than 7 could ever hope to be.. FF9 was at least 10X better than 7.. 8 and 10 just sucked.. I didnt like 8 because well i found the battle/item system to be very very boring.. and 10 because of the god awful voice acting i muted my TV throughout the majority of the game..

To me i do like JRPGs and i know a lot of people who don't, i don't understand why though.

If you don't like JRPGs then don't play them, and moan it is as simple as.

All I want is some good ones to come out on PS3, PS2 was loaded with them. I'm fine with the genre and often find the deviations to be worse or at least not to my taste.

Hey Square_Enix, give me Grandia 4 and that glorious batle system I'll never tire of!

I don't doubt that someone has already said this...but, it all boils down to your tastes. JRPG's are obviously popular enough (i.e. Final Fantasy) to hold their own and not have much change through the years. There has been a few JRPG's that I've really liked, Legend of Dragoon for example still holds a spot in my top 5 games, even though it's been years since I've played it last.

No more teen-centric stories. It's lame to make teenagers adult, and the only hope the world has, while making the token 20-30yr old a degenerate has been. Once you're 22, you're too old to save the world. Stop copying each other. Branch out with characters instead of making them the same person with a single character trait and different hairstyle to distinguish them. Fix the hair styles; I love me some crazy hair, but it's been done, let's move on. Swords are not more powerful than guns; you learned that in the late Tokugawa era -- making the sword really big and glowy doesn't change that.

I really do want to see JRPGS improve, I used to love them, but I really do feel like I've played them all.

I certelly wont start calling JRPG RPG never i will do that! Why??? Cause they are not RPG they have nothing in them hat make them RPG!!! You dont play a character any more than in let'S say Gear of War. It's not putting a level up system and a loot system that will make them RPG

To start we could stop classifying them between W/J and acknowledge them as RPG's... you know how it was less then a decade ago. Granted this doesn't help the argument but if freedom is that important to you why not classify them as sandbox and linear RPG's? But I digress, the more restrictions, borders, lines, etc you put on things the more fanboys, haters and so on and so forth will appear. Take away the ability to classify something as different and these topics would be less likely to appear.
I agree. Been saying that for a while (like talking to a wall though).

But don't kid yourself, they may not have been called JRPG and WRPG in the past, but they were still called Console RPG and PC RPG. And yes, there were still elitist's in those days (but far less) who would eschew the other type.

The main problem these days is that Joe Everyman is now a gamer. He likes to shoot things, requires instant gratification, and if you can titillate him with a little sex between aliens, well that's all good too. But Joe Everyman hates those crazy cartoons that the Japanese keep making and the deep stories and bright colours tend to hurt his head. He also feels the need to distance himself from those awful head-hurting games so he gave them another name and has slowly begun to tell people that they aren't even RPGs at all.

Lucky for me, I'm not Joe Everyman. I like most RPG types except for the Shooter ones (exception: Fallout 3, due to VATS). I'm sure that you're not like our friend Joe either.
And you write that and yet still have the gall to accuse other people of being elitist! ROFL! You hypocrite. (Deep stories. Heheh, yeah right.)

The only JRPG I like is Demon's Souls, but you still don't need to 'fix' JRPGS, because what you suggesting is making them like WRPGs. Therefore, play WRPGs if you don't like Japanese ones.

It's been said before and I don't care.

[HEADING=1]ALL OF YOU WHO WANT TO CHANGE IT: BACK THE FUCK OFF![/HEADING]
It's your fucking choice to play the damned things. Don't ***** about them. Are the fans holding you down forcing the game on you? No. So why do you WRPG fans try to do that to us!? We LIKE these games BECAUSE of the combat! BECAUSE they aren't realistic! I am getting pretty damn sick of realism in games. Sometimes I want to save a small Japanese city from god with an arsenal of pins and crazy partners. Does that make me wrong? No. Does that make you wrong for NOT wanting to? No. But it is wrong when people do this. I'm not talking to the OP as much as I am toward some of the people who commented! Christ, god forbid ANYONE bash on something mainstream! NO! And I am sick of these threads! The ones that say:
Why JRPG's suck
Why I hate JRPG's
etc
THEY'RE MORE ANNOYING THAN THE DAMN WOMEN GAMERS ONES!
Also, it's not even appropriate to group all JRPG's together! I mean, look at No More Heroes. It's a JRPG! And what's this!? NO TURN BASED COMBAT!? THIS IS MADNESS!
No, this is reality. Before you go around saying they're all the fucking same get your facts straight.
Also, sometimes a STORY is nice! Anyone remember those? You know, the things games used to have before moral choice and gimmicks raped them? Well guess what! JRPG's FUCKING HAVE THEM. And they're very often good! You may say "They're all about some emo kid saving the world." REALLY!? That's your fucking argument? Alright, lets go through A FEW JRPG protagonists who aren't emo:
Travis Touchdown
Link
Sora
Neku Sakuraba (HE WASN'T EMO. Just antisocial. Almost everyone on this site is so don't even try bitching about this one.)
If you need more, tell me. I don't want to be called a troll for making a list.
NOW! On to the "Saving the world" bit.
No More Heroes: YOUR TRYING TO GET LAID.
No More Heroes 2: YOUR TRYING TO GET LAID.
The World Ends With You: Your trying to come back to life.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 1&2: YOUR TRYING TO GO HOME!
Kingdom Hearts: YOUR LOOKING FOR YOUR FRIENDS!
etc

There. Now, I don't hate WRPG fans, I hate the ones that ***** about JRPG's. Hell, I don't give a fuck if you play them. But to those of us who do like them the bashing is getting annoying. So, to those of you saying something like:
"Turn them into WRPG's HUR DUR DUR!"
Go kill yourself, because everyone is entitled to their own god damned taste.

Rant. Over.

EDIT: I FORGOT ONE POINT.
RPG doesn't need to mean sandbox! It simply means ROLE PLAYING GAME. So don't start whining about how they aren't sandbox.

EDIT 2: I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST WOMEN GAMERS.
I am simply sick of the threads about them. I don't care if you play games or not.

To deny that both WRPGS and JRPGS do not contain deep stories is just a blatant disregard toward both sides of the argument. Fallout 3 shows humanity coping in a world of nuclear waste giving rise to a new form of racism all while the very core values of what is considered good and evil are called into question. Meaning JRPGS like the Persona series blend in psychological symbolism that involves your character using their psychological states that affects both plot but gameplay as well.

They don't need fixing. Well, aside from stuff like this:

I hate it when my JRPGs get preachy, teaching me life lessons.
Wow that just may be one of the worst game endings of all time.

I tried another Tales on PS2 at some point (don't recall which) and it just felt like Star Ocean lite.
It may have been Legendia, in which case that's also a series black sheep. Come to think of it, the Tales series is kinda like Final Fantasy with the quality rifts between games.
Yeah, I hear Namco Tales studio actually doesn't put a full effort on every game, so have the series is bad and half is awesome, the fact that not every one is brought here is sometimes a favor (special cross consal editions and classic ones not with standing)

Yuri from Tales of Vespria was close at 21, but yeah there needs to be more older characters. And I don't know her age but Shion Uzuki from Xenosaga may have been over 22, but I can't confirm that. It really is hard to think of an older main character.

Virtually no RPGs, W or J, have deep stories (no, FO3 is not deep). Some people mistakenly think depth means shoehorning unsubtle, preachy, poorly written moralism and/or pretentious, pseudo-intellectual, faux-philosophical bullshit into the story, resulting in awful atrocities against writing such as this:
This is not deep. This is poorly written unsubtle bullshit.

Agreed that FO3 is not deep... in fact the story is nearly absent in this game and boring...
But damn your wrong... Okey i'm a JRPG hater... pretty much have been, but i can see there is deep in some of theyr story (even if it dont interest me in the slightest)
and maybe you should look at KoTOR2 for WRPG deeth... okey the game is unfinished, but you see the potential and the deepth of the game in it
