You'll get better when you find what class you're suited for. I was like that until I found out I was a really good heavy, which was a class I generally avoided.

When in the server list type Valve in the tag area. Have never had any issues with the Valve servers. Players are nicer too. (Trust me I've been in some bad servers, they will ban if they think you're new.)

It's a great game, you've just got to leap the massive learning gap... also, cunts seem to be in every game, it's hardly endemic to Team Fortress with CoD, Halo and Battlefield being bastions of kindness.

Play medic.

Just keep healing. So maybe you lose your chance to uber. Just keep healing.So maybe you become a giant target for your enemy. Just keep healing. So maybe you get chastised a bit for not healing enough. Just keep healing.

As a medic, even at the lowest skill level, you are doing the most important thing you can be doing. Contributing to the team effort. Some may complain, but people as a whole are thankful, as I've come to find.

"Even if the days wear on, and you strive to become better, have hope. Hold on to the belief that tomorrow will be better than today. Hold on for dear life."

Well, that kinda helps...BUT I HAVE NO FRIENDS WHO ARE EVER ON AT THE SAME TIME AS ME!!!!!!

I gave it 13 hours to 'get better'. It didn't. What a waste of money!
And theres your problem right there. You gave it only 13 hours. Trust me I didn't get good at TF2 till a while in but when I did it was really fun. Yes there are jerks on TF2 but what game doesn't? And generally the community has been great. As to your backstabbing problem either play Scout or Pyro as spies leave them alone or keep your back to the wall.

Check steam for a user named "Blignorance"

If you're still willing to give it a try, I'll give you the basics on the game that you'll want to know and little tips that help you get better. I'm not /that/ good myself but I make a pretty damn dangerous heavy, a decent soldier and a tricky spy.

Oh, and if you don't want me to teach you, then I'll say... play the game more. Team Fortress 2 is amazing at how instinct is 45% of the game (with 50% being knowledge on weapons, classes and maps, and 5% being twitch reflexes. In pub servers, anyway). Try playing as the pyro. Probably the worst class out of the whole game, but it really is surprisingly versatile. With demo, soldier and heavy, you might feel they're too slow for you, but with sniper and scout, you probably won't have the reflexes for it. The engineer and spy are too complicated (even if you know how they work on a technical level) and the medic is booooring.

i kinda can't help but think if your THAT bad you shouldn't be playing. i played a lot of offline practice when i first started, and while it's true that the ai is fucking retarded, at least they can be good to get feel for controls and such. some classes you can simulate more or less perfectly in offline practice, like soldier or heavy. others are way too easy, like engineer. spy...just plain incorrect. valve dropped the ball on anti-spy ai.

and playing offline, i got pretty ok. i felt confident when i started to play. course it took awhile to get used to playing with people, but once i got the hang of it i was getting chain kills with the eternal reward and shooting arrows into medics eyesockets.

sounds to me like your more having interface issues then game ones. try more offline practice, just pick a class thats easy to simulate. then cross your fingers, and hope you get a server full of noobs. much easier now the game is free.

Well, here's the thing: I play as Scout more than all the other classes put together, and I STILL get backstabbed more than anyone else!!! So the problem isn't being a spy-proof class: it's that, like I said, I have a 'stab me' sign on my back!!!!!!

If you want help, I'd be happy to give you a hand. Team Fortress 2's a great game, and to give up on it is stupid, even if some people aren't in any way hospitable. If you want some tips, PM me and we'll talk. Some people are strict morons who want the game played a certain way. Admittedly I act that way, but only when my team isn't doing what they're supposed to.

What the hell does that even mean?
~~~
Edit:
Just some more general stuff: I think my biggest problem is that I have no mic.
That doesn't mean what you think it means: it's not that I ever have anything to communicate that I couldn't do by mashing X-4 (or whatever is the combo for 'need a dispenser here') like everyone else. My problem is that I'm too talkative, and having to type means I have to stand still a lot. Which probably leads to more problems than anything else, although I still die a lot even when I'm not in a talkative mood, which was usually before I discovered the 'chat/all' key.
And the worst part is: whenever anyone brings that up, I yell at them.
I'm a terrible person.
Also, I just discovered on the Steam news feed that PC Gamer wrote a 'noob's guide to TF2'. Well, that would have been nice to discover before I uninstalled the f**king thing!
Let me give you a hint. Change servers. If you get banned then change to another server.
Don't speak to anyone and just keep playing as you are, sooner or later you will get better. This is the reason I hate multiplayer games, they ask you for huge commitment in order to get any fun.
-I have no friends to help me get better.
Neither do i, but i often MVP on most servers i join. And ive never played competitive shooters before. I played Left 4 dead, but thats not really the same thing.
-Youtube videos don't help at all, because all I think is 'I wish I could do that...' rather than 'Okay, try that next time!'
So start thinking "Okay, try that next time!' instead?
-People online are all complete douchebags. All. Including myself.
Not true, although i do fail to see how this interfiers with you sucking at TF2
-Fighting with bots is completely different to fighting real people.
Iiiiiiindeed it is. Dont play with bots.
-I seem to have a piece of paper taped to me saying 'Stab Me' or else I wouldn't be backstabbed worse than Gary 'Roach' Sanderson.
If you are constantly being stabbed by spies, you should learn by now, LOOK BEHIND YOU!
-Same goes for headshots, but replace Roach with Jack Carver.
Dont play heavy if you dont want to be headshotted, they are the easiest to headshot. Dont play Sniper, because there are two levels of playing sniper- you suck, or you dominate. Most people suck, including me. there is no middle ground. Soldier also runs slowly, but the rocketjumping makes it hard to be headshotted. And, finaly, if a sniper hits you with a headshot while as scout, while you are jumping, more than once, hes almost certanly aimbotting.
And a general tip- Dont play 2fort unless you want to mess arround. its too easy to defend, too easy to grief, and too easy to collapse into sniper wars. Try a Payload map, or a CP map, they require much more mobility and it helps prevent Sniper and Engy nests to a degree.
Well, it's a really quite a simple game. Also 20 dollars. That means you've bought it after it was free, so say that you bought it, shove on you Proof of Purchase after joining and they should be cool.
Only thing the Proof of Purchase guards you from is idiots.
...for asking for help changing teams from 'spectator' to 'actually playing'. Then I got muted, then insulted by someone who must have seen that I couldn't defend myself. And then I was kicked.
You know what? Team Fortress 2 has given me more grief than any other game in existence. Why did I spend 20 dollars on it? It was stupid while it lasted. I sucked at it, everyone online hates me, I spent more time dead than alive, all the advice I received was both painfully obvious and completely useless...Fuck this game.
Edit: In terms of people saying 'You hate it because you're bad at the game':
-I have no friends to help me get better.
-I don't have natural talent.
My Steam name is in my profile, add me and I will show you a password protected, friendly server.
one of the main things I try to remember is this. no matter how many times i get headshotted, no matter how many spies backstab me, as long as I help my team in some way, give them something that they wouldn't have without me, I'm happy. because its not a game that can be won with a single person all the time. one time, i went medic and just ran around the front lines, I overhealed anyone I saw, and healed anyone that yelled for me. our team one without BLU capping a single point, and I had healed over 2000 damage. look for the little victories, such as getting a kill, saving a teammates life, or even just getting a kill assist. If I am staring at a respawn screen, I think about what tiny advantage i gave my team that life.
