What the hell does that even mean?
~~~ Edit:
Just some more general stuff: I think my biggest problem is that I have no mic.
That doesn't mean what you think it means: it's not that I ever have anything to communicate that I couldn't do by mashing X-4 (or whatever is the combo for 'need a dispenser here') like everyone else. My problem is that I'm too talkative, and having to type means I have to stand still a lot. Which probably leads to more problems than anything else, although I still die a lot even when I'm not in a talkative mood, which was usually before I discovered the 'chat/all' key.
And the worst part is: whenever anyone brings that up, I yell at them.
I've been playing Team Fortress since it was a mod for Quake. Granted people were less likly to be assholes back them.
Best advice for new players in play demo and learn how to bank grenades around corners. Then work on the sticky jump. Or pyro and sweep for spys.
The only thing that pisses me off about the game is the new soldier weapons. The can disable a sentry gun and basically mess with the balance of the whole game.
Also disable voice chat. In fact you should have voice chat disabled in all source engine games. No one says any thing worth hearing.
I'm a pretty big fanboy (my avatar..) but I just can't consistently get into tf2. Getting items is cool, but they get boring pretty quickly.
I'm not bad at it, I usually have a positive k/d and I don't rage from dying a lot, tf2 doesn't make me angry like that.
But I just don't find it that much fun.
And everyone always goes on about how nice the community is, I mean, some of them are great but there are just as many douchebags as something like CoD.
The other day I was on a server with this guy and I pyro'd him so he started raging at me.
I said something like "Dude relax it's just a game" then he started abusing me and saying I was a noob/******/fucktard etc.
Everytime I typed something in chat, none of which was even directed towards him, he'd just say something like 'Shut the fuck up lemonade you ******"
Yeah, great community.
EDIT:
Oh yeah and when I played yesterday the soldier had two new weapons which were laser guns with unlimited ammo and the ability to fuck up sentry guns with ease and mini-crit to hell.
I think I'll stick to css
Still, who wants to be the worst player on the server? The guy who's never alive long enough to provide benefits that people will notice? The dude with a KDR lower than 0.15? Because I'm all of those things at once. Everywhere. No matter what class, what people, what map, what type...
lol yeah sounds like TF2. I just ignore basically every one.
Another good peice of advice is to see who every one else on your team is playing as. Pick a class that you're good at and there is few or none of on your team.
And if you're not a good sniper don't pick sniper. Unless you can get a headshot 3 out of 5 times you're just spy bait.
And yeah don't let spys ruin it for you. If you keep getting killed by spys switch to pyro and sweep every one and every corner. It pisses them off as much as getting backstabbed pisses you off.
Okay. Fine. I'll reinstall the damn game, and I'll try using 'start playing', and I'll fave any servers I find which are at least reasonably nice to me, and I'll try to stop minding that I'm terrible because I don't have enough time to spend just playing it, and I'll wear the PoP, and play Medic, and all that. I shouldn't have made this thread, though. I should have just asked for advice. That way, it wouldn't be a strain on my sanity.
So now that I've admitted over and over that I fail at life, please, please, please, please...
Welcome to the internet, you have no control over the information that gets on there.
Anyway don't use the stupid matchmaker, this is PC not a console and real men use a server browser. You just need to know what you're looking for.
If it's a 32 player server than it's most likely going to be a spamfest. If it's a 12 or 16 player server it may be kitted out more for coordinated play which you should avoid at this stage of your career as a mercenary for RED/BLU. If the server is on a 5 point CP map such as CP_Badlands, CP_Granary, CP_Well or Yukon etc then it may house a higher proportion of players involved in PUGs and competitions (so you should avoid it unless you want to learn by example i.e. watching them tear the shit out of you). NOTE: One of the most telling signs of a server is its map rotation, if it's CP only then it'll often have more "pro players", if the rotation has a mix of payload and some CP then that's what you'll want.
Some further advice, don't play instaspawn payload. It's unbalanced in favour of the defenders since their spawn is usually right next to the final capture point. Only go on 24/7 instaspawn 2 Fort servers if you want to mess around. I.e. learning to play sniper, practicing rocket jumps or just hunting for frags. If you want to play to win go elsewhere.
If you can't convince any of your friends to play a FREE GAME THAT'S AWESOME then go on to all-talk servers. This will at least simulate human contact. If it looks to be some kind of community's server (and mostly they will be if it's all-talk) then I'd avoid idly talking too much for your first games there. Then once they get to recognising you (i.e. like 6 or so games with the same people, ideally playing as a class that'll get you noticed through conspicuous acts of helpfulness/ownage) then you might consider chatting a little or finding their website and joining their forums. (Use your own discretion, I'm sure you know how to make friends).
Finally you could move to Australia. We don't have as many server's as you guys but most people on there seem fairly nice. Again it's all about picking the right servers and this is something you'll learn with time.
ADDENDUM: Playing an online competitive FPS is like going clubbing. Sure there's douchebags out there but you can often have a great time (especially with friends). Also when you're dancing (playing) don't go about being all conspicuous (talking a lot, telling your team how to play) especially if you don't have the skills to back it up. Get out there, have some fun, focus on your own performance and maybe you'll get asked to dance... that metaphor went a lot longer than I thought it would.
For the backstabbing thing, do you ever stop moving? Do you see an enemy and stop to aim? I haven't played TF2 for a while but if there's one thing i remember, never stop moving.
Yeah it throws off your aim, but it makes you a harder target.
Also make it a habit to turn around randomly when you're walking around. If you see anyone suspicious, shoot em.
For sure. I don't even play RTS games online any more because of this. It usually starts less them 60 seconds into the game.
No one wants to be the worst player but if you worry too much about being the best you'll still end up with a bad score. Filling the holes in your team's defense or offense is how you get a good score.
Like I said try the Demoman he's pretty easy to learn. And USE THE DEFAULT WEAPONS until you learn how to play a class. Default weapons are almost always better then the new weapons. The minor bonuses they add destroy your flexibility.
Can't you close a thread just by editing the main post and clicking "delete"?
Oh yeah, and play all the classes. People always say one's easy (or show off in the case of w+m1 pyros) but everyone's mentality is different to each class. I honestly think the Heavy is the easiest class, since you just spray-n'-pray whilst ducking occasionally to confuse snipers.
Finally, someone who doesn't tell me that the Medic has the solution to starving kids in Africa.
Unfortunately, from what I have played of the Demoman, it's not easy at all: when you're not blowing yourself up, you're placing sticky bombs in obvious places and nobody ever runs into them or trying to hit someone in melee and losing because you have the worst melee.
The game is free now, get some of you friends to download it and play with you, then they can jump to your defense when those asshole dochbags start to be mean to you. I know that there is nothing that ruins a game more than when you are on a server with a bunch of bullies who wont leave you alone, but going in with a group of friends can really help get you in to the game, help you improve and get good at the game, and once you have started to get better the bullying will stop being as bad. Bullies aim for weaker targets, and that is also true in the cyber world, People who are not as experienced can have a terrible time when playing their new game, It annoys the hell out of me but it is something that I don't think is going to stop and that we need to find a way around, because people can just be real dicks sometimes.
In which case I've heard singleplayer games are fun...
Seriously though, if you really dislike playing the game then don't play it. You'll only get good at the things you actually like. Make sure that your dislike for the game is due to mechanics/style and not playerbase (because the Australian TF2 population is not that bad) or your getting owned (because that will obviously stop when you get better).
Also I'd recommend my favourite server to you but it's gone or moved or whatever, (It was the TF2AU Reddit server).
In terms of what class to play I've heard you've been playing scout a lot. Stop it. Unless you're a good twitch gamer then you should come back to scout after you've had more time with other classes. Scouts are glass cannons capable of taking down multiple foes at once (but only if you're good). Go soldier or heavy for a bit, you'll be more successful and this will teach you how to counter them as a scout.
Team Fortress isn't the easiest game to get into. I liked it for a while, the people got on my nerves however. I think I saw anime scat porn one server then I uninstalled, never to go back. I'd suggest doing the same if you can't really think of any redeeming qualities to the game.
And theres your problem right there. You gave it only 13 hours. Trust me I didn't get good at TF2 till a while in but when I did it was really fun. Yes there are jerks on TF2 but what game doesn't? And generally the community has been great. As to your backstabbing problem either play Scout or Pyro as spies leave them alone or keep your back to the wall.
Well, here's the thing: I play as Scout more than all the other classes put together, and I STILL get backstabbed more than anyone else!!! So the problem isn't being a spy-proof class: it's that, like I said, I have a 'stab me' sign on my back!!!!!!
Fact: there is no such thing as a "Spy-proof" class. No matter what class you pick, ALWAYS look behind you every few seconds.
It sounds to me like you've just had some bad luck with your server choices. Ever since TF2 went F2P there's been an upsurge in elitist pricks. I'd suggest that you try the official Valve servers, as many new/inexperienced players frequent them.
I don't get the self-entitlement that 'teh hardcore playerz' take out on so-called 'noobs'. Take an 'o' out of that word and apply it to those 'hardcores' and that's exactly what they are. Unless they were born expert in the game, they should shut the f**k up and give other players the opportunity to get better at the game. Skill and knowledge is learnt. It isn't a birthright or entitlement, and thus it can't be withheld by nobs who wield such skills as compensation for their obvious inadequacies as people.
