More than 13 hours is required to get good at this game.

If you dont have friends, find some, if the people on the server sound like assholes just dont say anything.

problem solved :)

You keep getting back stabbed and head shotted? Don't stop to type. If you have to talk, go into the spawn area, or ya know, get a mic.

And if you want friends to play with, join a user group here on the Escapist.

There, problem solved.

Yeah i had the same problem i really wanted play spy on xbox but since it was really hard everyone would shout at me so i had play pyro which got boring then i bought it for pc it took me a little but i got used to playing engineer but i stopped playing for a long time and only started again during the halloween update.

And i got happy with the update for bots so i practised since i didn't want play multiplayer incase what happened on xbox happened again i got loads of items but the only thing at annoys me is at i have to wear my medal of fourtune (you get it for buying the game 1 month after it was out) so people don't start getting pissed off thinking im a F2P player and only recently i decided to go on multiplayer the first server 2fort is a good one people keep quiet so its easy
and i have managed to be good at spy triple backstabs!

It takes time to get good just try with the bots then join a server when you know your ready.

Unless your on xbox none of the above can be done.

How are those sour grapes there buddy?

TF2 servers can be run by anyone and honestly 90% of everything is crap so lots of servers will suck. That's the nature of online gaming. Giving up so easily is not going to get you anywhere. If one dick server can ruin your fun then you mind as well never buy a game with multiplayer again because their will always be dicks. Honestly it sounds like you got kicked down one time and then threw a hissy-fit with sour grapes. If you not bother with it, fine but give us a little more explanation besides one bad event before you just declare the game horrible.

I think I spotted the problem, presumably you are fairly young or act like it online which starts all sorts of fires.
95% of multiplayer game content is community, if people don't play nice the experience will be shite every step of the way.

I say go back in 3 or 5 years, as we get older we tend to cool off and all the trivial stuff that makes you go up in flames now will be gone.

Well, that kinda helps...BUT I HAVE NO FRIENDS WHO ARE EVER ON AT THE SAME TIME AS ME!!!!!!

I gave it 13 hours to 'get better'. It didn't. What a waste of money!
If your Aussie or New Zealander i can help, if not, well, sorry that you feel that way about the best GAME EVOR!

If you want to talk more bout it, then PM me please. I can help you if you'd like :) thing is I got TF2 for free on Steam. Unless you have Steam, then crap yeah add me buddy! Otherwise I can PM you tips and anything you need to know because I played over 40 hours. I love the game, but I too grow tired of trash talking and being kicked (I got kicked 2x, 1 for being a lame demoman and 2 for getting a dozen back stabs in one turn as a spy which was uncool of them to do.) So if TF2 doesn't suit you then I would like you to save up for the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. That's going to be where your money is heading bro.
Okay. This paragraph is the only one that really caught my eye, so I'll handle all the points as civilly as I can.

-I just added you on Steam.
-I don't mind you being F2P: I don't have that many items anyway, and I've been told to use the basic stuff until I improve.
-Well...I think the best way to learn would be actually practicing. Problem is, every spy I know is too good for me to practice against. Probably including yourself. And doing spychecking one-on-one is almost impossible, since you need other people for the spy to blend in with.
-I'm already planning to get Skyrim (despite usually not liking WRPGs), but I'll hold onto my pre-order deposit for a while, since it doesn't come out until November and I've already got 20 dollars down for Deus Ex HR: Augmented.

If you live in Australia I can give you a list of good friendly servers :)
How many times must I say this? Yes, I live in Australia, no, I'll probably just use 'join random game using this mode' more often!

Join a clan, preferably a long running and large one. i used to be part of a clan called 'the conclave' when i was still playing bad company 2, really nice people, and gave me a lot of advice.
also, only having fun when winning is a major flaw in you no offense, because in PvP games, the main objective is to have fun, no matter what.
just mute everyone try find a decent server, join a decent clan, and your off.

For reference, try getting into the DotA community, or any of its clones. No one will help you learn the ropes, teh AI is worthless and by the time you figure out how to play, the metagame and way to play has changed.

Roll with it and try to find a local server, with local people, they're usually nicer. Public games are just scum of the earth looking for n00bs to take out and make their k/d ratio higher. assholes.
Good grief, yes. Many years ago I tried to get into DoTA as it was a popular game at a local public LAN party. Its players have absolutely ZERO tolerance for anyone who hasn't spent 30+ hours reading up on strategies/characters/item builds. It looks deceptively easy but because I didn't know every tiny little thing I got verbally harassed and basically told to get the hell out of the game, which I did. After trying an online server where I got the same result, I decided if given the choice I'd rather stay ignorant of the game and not become one of those elitist douchebags, and uninstalled it.

Anyway, don't be afraid to put a game down. Remember that if a game has tons of elitists in it you're basically required to become one of them to play effectively. You can either just say sod it all or try to be one of the accepting players who tolerates newbies, I'm sure there are some out there somewhere.

To be honest, I think TF2 started going downhill with all these special items and crap, it used to be a simple game and now it's all about stats and mini-crits and other junk it didn't need, so I wouldn't blame you for leaving it.

I feel for you i to was having problums like that

mine were that I like the 2fort map but all the douchebags hated my stratagy
I like to play enganeer and set up my turret and despencer right near the intellagce and just stand there repeatedly fixing them *evil grin* yes it is a somewhat effctive statagry does it aways work? no so I dont see how its any worse that the shit the snipers pull headshooting ppl who are not even attacking others (or in my case turned around and or lost)

yea there's the joke that engineers hate spys but as far as everything goes this engineer hates snipers

Like I said try the Demoman he's pretty easy to learn.
Finally, someone who doesn't tell me that the Medic has the solution to starving kids in Africa.

Unfortunately, from what I have played of the Demoman, it's not easy at all: when you're not blowing yourself up, you're placing sticky bombs in obvious places and nobody ever runs into them or trying to hit someone in melee and losing because you have the worst melee.
lol, the reason people steer noobs toward medic if because you're spy bait and give them extra HP. Though it sounds like you figured that out :p
see, you're learning.

The sticky bombs require a little bit of knowledge of the map you're playing. Though some time their presence alone is enough to slow down the enemy team. The key to the sticky bomb is to spread them out, not group them up. A wide area with sticky bombs dotted all around usually causes enemy players to try another rout, or they'll stop and try to shoot each bomb to destroy it. They're as much of a psychological weapon as they are a physical one.

Just lob the normal grenades into the enemy where they're grouped. You wont always get kills but you'll almost always hit some one, or something. This gets you assist points. And adds to the chaos in the enemy's line. Think of it like a mortar launcher. Sometimes you take out 6 people. Some times you just break their line. And some times you hit engineer buildings.

While reloading jump and spin a lot. This tells any spys in the area that you're looking for them. Less skilled spys will assume you saw them and leave the area.

Avoid using melee while you're just starting out because more experienced players know all the tricks.

Another good starting class is the heavy. As his strategy is 'point gun at enemy and shoot.'
He's a major headshot and backstab magnet but medics usually gravitate toward them.

The only downside to the heavy is people tend to avoid them if they see them. Try to hid just behind a corner or in an alcove. When you hear shots of footsteps pop out and surprise them. They'll shoot at you but if they're close enough to you its a guaranteed kill with minimal damage.

Heavy also lacks speed and flexibility so he's best used as defense.

Also, the pyro, bane of the dastardly spys. Though the flamethrower is considered one of the weakest weapons in the game its ability to set enemys on fire has claimed more lives then people are willing to admit. The easiest strategy is to run straight into the enemy and burn them up. They'll back away and you'll almost always die but the fire continues to burn long after you die. I've gotten several kills while dead with the pyro. And countless assists. Not only does it scatter the enemy but it weakens them severely.

You can also deflect grenades and rocket with your secondary fire. Send a soldiers rocket back at him. Or sweep a demo's sticky bombs off to the side. And put our your teammates if you're feeling generous.

A slightly more advanced strategy is to flank the enemy and hit them with fire. If you run into some one along the way its a coin flip who comes out alive but if you get to the enemy's line you'll get at least one kill. Unless they have it locked down super hardcore.

And finally the good ol' engineer. He might be a bit boring but if you put a sentry in a good spot you'll tear the enemy to pieces and become toe source of much rage. Finding a good spot requires some knowledge of the map you're playing on so I recommend only using him on maps you know fairly well.

Once you get your sentry up keep one eye on it, and another on building the rest of your structures. Put the dispenser close to your sentry so you can heal it with nearly unlimited ammo. Build a teleporter entrance right by spawn. And follow a group of teammates to fine a good spot for the exit. Once you have a teleporter entrance and exit up, upgrade the entrance. This will also upgrade the exit. And leave you nice and safe by the spawn.

If you see ANY ONE approaching your structures shoot them with the shotgun. Half the time its a disguised spy.

You don't need an engineer to win. But you need an engineer to win quickly. Building a teleporter in a good spot usually makes your team love you.

Hopefully this helps. Bounce around these classes to start out with. Then try out the others once you get comfortable.

Ignore other players as they rarely have any thing constructive to say. Just turn voice chat off, its unnecessary and annoying.

tryed the coach system? Also stick to a class play some pyro or medic in the start (well after 13 hours most people would be starting to get a decent grasp of the game) watch some "how to" vids on youtube, you can learn a lot from them in the start, and even when your at an advanced level.

Also i've never really been met with much hate on any servers, may be because i play on mainly norwegian/swedish servers tho nd i can't recall beeing so bad that i gave anyone a reason to shout at me, also played with friends in the start and i don't recall any of them beeing shouted at eighter.

Yes. He couldn't come, because the server was full. Problem.
Aww. i started playing before the offline practice system was made so i've never seen the point of it, when i started playing the game i had already seen tons of youtube vids so i already sort of knew how to play the classes. picking a class you wanna play should really help tho since if you keep changing classes all the time it's hard to get better.

Also if your getting frustraded by spies go play some pyro. : p

I think what most people here are trying to tell you is 'practice makes perfect'. It took me a year to get used to, I was stuck at the bottom of the scoreboard constantly - sometimes entire rounds with no kills!

You just learn to get used to it slowly - be patient stay calm. Just make sure to spam for a medic every few seconds, ALWAYS move and shoot etc. I know it's obvious what people tell you and there's not really much you can do but learn. The good thing about tf2 is there's constantly new players - especially with the new update. So they'll always be people worse than you - all you have to do is learn to be better than them and you'll slowly get better.

And really - stick on a tf2 server long enough with a mic (OK and a APPARENTLY sexy British accent helps too) and you'll make loads of friends! Just don't take the game seriously! Learn to enjoy the finer moments when you get shot dead a pyro for the billionth time but see that the heavy you set on fire burned to death and you get the last laugh!
That moment when your own stickies blow you up BUT you still took out 3 enemy's with it.
One of those rounds where you got no kills whatsoever and your team lost BUT just at the end you get a taunt kill as they chase you down!

Once you learn to enjoy TF2 - you can learn to get better at it! :D Besides there's a tutoring system now - you could probably use it!
Good luck out there!

Problem is, the only class I ever feel like playing is the hardest one in the game to use. Hint: He's voiced by Nathan Vetterlein.
