Awww, no one's biting. Usually when you say that on the Internet someone comes along and says "No way! Their differnt numbers! OMG!!!!!!11" Oh well. Maybe Australia's just more civil. How ironic.

EDIT: By the way, it is not a theory, it is a theorem. Math deals with universal truths.
Why are saying Australia is more civil, this sight caters to a pretty global audiance, and I think the actual magizine is based in North America. This sight just seems to attract more intellectual people.

If you want to really drive people crazy try and explain either wave-paritcal duality, or that the speed of light in a vacume is constant no matter how fast you moving and that time will warp to keep it that way, aka the basic premise for special relativity.
So it's a wave, and a particle, both at the same time, and only really becomes one or the other when its observed?

oh i agree, i think we should lower emissions no matter what the outcome, stop logging and preserve the planet, we need to do something about global warming for sure.

I just don't think we are the cause, but in either case we need to be the solution.
I hate the misconception that we are dammaging the planet in such a way that it will not recover. The planet has gone through much worse than anything we have throw at it, it can regrow and repair the damge we have done to it and any trace of us would have been forgotten. We do need to preserve, save, no.

I don't think the catch phrase should be "save the planet", it should be "save your skin".

I really think we have no clue what the hell we're doing with the environment. A while back, if I remember, CO2 was fine and CO was the big problem. I think most of this is a big gimmick to buy "green" things, although I have to say, smog control laws are a good thing. Compare downtown L.A.'s air to the countryside. Do I think it has anything to do with the globe becoming or not becoming hotter? I don't know, in fact I don't think anyone does. However, I do realize that it probably is better for health to live somewhere with clean air.

Recently the IPCC announced that the Earth has cooled since 1998, and will continue to cool for the next seven to twelve years before beginning to heat up again.

You may not agree with catastrophic anthropogenic global warming, but you have to agree that climate models are getting really good at predicting stuff after it's happened.

As to other animals, none individually produce CO2 on the scale of humans, but human production is a tiny part of overall CO2 production, 2% to 5% depending on whose numbers you believe. And many (including termites, many bacteria, and all ungulates) produce methane, a much stronger greenhouse gas.

Hindsight is usually a lot more accurate than Foresight.

Mathematics is purer than Science though because it actually determines the difference between Theory and Practical through Numerical Error.
(Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe)

Here's one for the Scientists though :

Pick any widely accepted Theorem. (Evolution, General Relativity etc.) What piece(s) of evidence (however outlandish) would you need to overturn it totally?

If you can't find any reason where it couldn't be accepted, then surely it's no longer a Theorem?

We had something like that when I was a project engineer for a wrecker company. Design it to a thirty-second of an inch, lay it out with a tape graduated in sixteenths, mark it with chalk, and cut it with a torch.

Yeah, I've built up such a wall of cynicism, to the point where even stuff I like like the Penn & Teller show, I wonder if THEY are pushing a viewpoint I should even be taking at face value, as they've been known to use the 'aw look at the sick baby, the nasty man made it happen' thing.

Certainly if I felt the need to go out and murder some people, the Daily Mail would be the perfect primer, its so filled with idiotic hatemongering, I'm amazed it's allowed to be printed as a newspaper, its the Jack Thompson of UK media.

Such gems as 'screenshot from fallout 3 reported as Al Qaeda plans to destroy Washington DC'
'Manhunt is sent to corrupt our children' (with its big fat '18' cert and banner across it saying NOT FOR SALE TO CHILDREN - yes that means you), and of course every single day, the front page stating...
'Illegal immigrants caused Diana crash, kidnapped Maddie, are all terrorists and are pushing up house prices' or 'Labour Government will be hiring Al qaeda paedos as doctors to examine your child'.

I truly wish I was exaggerating... (ok maybe I am a bit, but the whole '(985 of all the world's foreigners live in Dover and get a free Porshe' gets soo damn old.

Of course, across the pond there's the professional unbiased fact reporting journalists that work for, yes, FOX news...

FOX news, as in 'Nintendo DS a tool for paedophiles to get to your child'.
Essentially it boiled down to if a paedo could get within 30 feet he could ask for your child's address, and your child could send him away with that info, a bit like that other well known tool of the pervert, some paper and a pencil.

Teach your child some vague hint of self awareness, such as 'if he offers you candy and puppies dont get in the van' and then the DS probably isn't going to be the main problem.

Yes, I know I've veered so far from 'relevant' that I couldn't hit it with a quake 3 railgun, but I feel better for venting, thank you all and goodnight.

Oh and people believing there's no good music after 1990. (and I'm 35, and yes, I'm addicted to parentheses). The problem is the marketing, pushing bad karaoke such as X Factor and American Idol instead of creative people.

'I'm sorry, you look great, and you've got a great voice, but you just don't sound enough like Britney or Justin Timberlake for us to repackage you, and we also detected a hint of personality which could cause trouble later on when we make you do hideous soul destroying covers and a Xmas CD, so you're out'.

Also any kinda anti aging stuff, look at Donald Trump, Barbra Cartland, Zsa Zsa Gabor...
If they can't look 18 again with their money, how is paying $200 for a small tub of repackaged tesco value hand cream going to help you?

Oh and I nearly forgot, people who get mad when others double or even triple post,

There again, I'm making seperate points, so what the hell!

What REALLY bugs me more than anything, tho, is the people who believe all this crap, about ghosts, and all immigrants have come to take our jobs and our women, and American Idol being the pinnacle of creativity, and Vin Diesel being an Oscar worthy actor and and and...*calms down*, seem to have the blissful happiness of ignorance, whereas I seem to get annoyed by just about everything short of having to breath in and out.

Its all so unfair!

I've shut up now....until I remember something else.

1) I only mentioned Buddha and Muhammed to offer some comparisons and as such they DO have a bearing on this argument. If it's true of those two religions (or at least just Islam) it might be true of Christianity as well.

2) If you don't trust the Church (I don't blame you), how can you trust whatever source you're using? If the Church burned the older documents and killed the questioners, what information are you going on? If it's information obtained recently through archeological digs and such, then by your own reasoning it's useless because this information was recorded after the fact.

3) Just because they opposed the Church, that doesn't mean that the opposers automatically told the truth. They may have had their own motivations, say...undermining an entity that they saw as a threat.
Just to rebut 2 of your arguments
1) The existence of Mohammad is not evidence of the existence of Jesus. We are debating historical evidence to their existence, not probability.

3) (this is in response to your 3rd argument, I am not a numerical tard) Just because they ARE the Church, that doesn't mean that they automatically tell the truth. They may have had their own motivations, say...undermining an entity that they saw as a threat.
About #1, again, I only meant it as a comparison. I also hoped it would draw attention to the fact that no one is calling into question the validity of any religion other than Christianity. Can't you guys focus on some other religion and give us a break?

About #3, That's pretty much my point. Two factions duking it out over who was right or wrong and who would ultimately have power in the end. I never said that the Church automatically tells the truth, I only meant that they're not the only ones who may have had questionable motives.

You know what? I think this thread needs more arguments. So, without further ado,

0.999.... (i.e. stretching off into infinity) is exactly equal to 1.

Discuss.
It may as well be. I mean, it requires something incalculable to actually make it 1.
If .000000000000000001 of a piece of you was missing, you'd never know.
My brain hurts trying to fathom this. Eventually it would get so close to one, but there would always be a miniscule fraction of space or whatever you would like to call it left. It won't be 1 but the difference will be too small to pick apart with your fingers*

*a girl in my cousin's class said that the reason we need microscopes to study cells is because they are too small to pick apart with your fingers. I thought that this was relevent to the subject of what people beleive.

Back to the global warming thing. I remember hearing that in the seventies the new craze was the planet is cooling and we'll all be icicles by the 21st century!! So I really don't think we're in that much danger and if you watch movies just stay inside next to a fire and the scary cold won't get you ;).
