The parents are overreacting, the police is under-reacting (yes, that's not a word). And the mother speaks of it like bullying is supposed to be a natural thing in school.

Not supposed to be, just is. People are dicks so little people are dicks. Damn shame.

But really, she wants that kid arrested? This is just a kid who got a little carried away while thinking about anime.

Yeah, I have a "Death note" upstairs with names in it, picked it up at Anime North. Quite a few detailed death scenarios too. I'll call the school now for my suspension.

I bet the police asked the kid and he told them "It's just from a TV show" and felt stupid as hell so they're just keeping their mouth shut.

I believe it went more along the lines of.

Kid: Oh hello officers, you want to ask how this works? Ok then, you write somebodies name in there and if no type of death or time is specified they will die of a heart attack in forty seconds so long as you have their face in your mind as you write it. Like so, constipal Mike Horton. Mwahaha MWAHHAHAHA
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA.

It looks it. The only other proper anime I've watched is Full Metal Alchemist, but I'm sure I can get into Death Note.

What's more I will say that I've heard a lot of horror writers/creators were inspired by their own thoughts of vengeance and stuff in school. Some even going so far as to make a point about the reality of locales where certain things happen. This kid's imagintive revenge fantasies might very well make him the next Steven King, Clive Barker, Dean Koontz, etc...

As true as this is the kid only set a name and date, so he's likely just venting anger. He didn't write an elaborate way to die, which is allowed(in the context of killing people with the Death Note that is).

Hopefully, at lunch he hadn't taken a potato chip and eaten it.

OT finally: Am I the only one who burst out with laughter when I heard that the list was a Death Note? In context it is quite humorous but out of it I can see how people without context could take this seriously.

Without knowing the kid at all I cannot say weither or not he was planning anything but this could be a time keeper for his plans or just a simple release for when he gets stressed. The school should respond but not with a suspension. Maybe move him away from the boys in question, ask if he is fine with school or if he would like to go with a "in office suspension" or with a full one. It's so close to the end of the year they could just work around the problem until summer, then he's off their reigns right? All I can see this doing is making the kid more bitter than he already is.

As a side note, this has given me a slight interest in going to have some fun with my Death Note upstairs.

I swear though, I know how hopeless some Staff and teaching faculty at a school can be.
Just recently there was a fight in the library. What did the librarians do? Nothing until one the two fighting kids had stopped it at a stalemate. THEN she came over and told them to stop or leave the library.
Jeez.

Just...It's a piece of paper, and the kiud has obviously made no attempt on any of the children on the list and just... Argh.

I think the big deal is the word "death" was involved with the list, otherwise no one would have given a damn until the kid actually lost it. This is more or less a good thing, as the bullying the kid was going through is now exposed, steps SHOULD be taken to improve the situation. However, this is the United States we're talking about, and you guys don't have the best track record in this area. You wouldn't have to worry about school violence this much if you had some form of gun control, or at least took the Right to Bare Arms in the context it was written in (hint: the British don't care any more).
