I like how it doesn't state if the dates have passed or not. Also, the kid clearly didn't follow the rules. He didn't list a way of death so the list is clearly harmless since their death times have passed (40 seconds after writing the names). It is cathartic to write death notes like that though.

I think the big deal is the word "death" was involved with the list, otherwise no one would have given a damn until the kid actually lost it. This is more or less a good thing, as the bullying the kid was going through is now exposed, steps SHOULD be taken to improve the situation. However, this is the United States we're talking about, and you guys don't have the best track record in this area. You wouldn't have to worry about school violence this much if you had some form of gun control, or at least took the Right to Bare Arms in the context it was written in (hint: the British don't care any more).
Because clearly the Middle School bullies would have never bothered the kid if they didn't have the right to own guns in about 4 years. Right?

I find it even funnier that they confirm the kid is being picked on, but rather than help the kid not be picked on, they'd rather just suspend him due to nonsense like this. Way to help the kid! Way to go creating a positive self esteem in him (something that it's obvious the kid lacks). You're pushing the kid to more likely shoot people because he's going to be frustrated and give up on the system because of shit like this.

If you want to see one possible reason behind why school shootings occur, this may be it.
-.- Like the saying goes, "Two wrongs don't make a right". The kid has to find other means to help himself and better his life and his self esteem. If the teachers, and faculty refuse to help him, he needs to go further and find the help he needs, not pretend to kill off students he doesn't like (and in this case a pop star he doesn't). Though some may find that this is just another way for Eastern shows to be taken the wrong way, Death Note was about a sadistic vigilante who killed thousands of people. That isn't something a kid should be imitating. So I think the actions taken are fine, he should know that the idea of killing another individual over malice or ill intent is wrong, Death Note has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Does anyone else find it ironic that there's an apple sitting there in their "depiction" of the list?
Damm I didn't notice that, funny little thing there ain't it?:p

I love at the end of the follow up shen they actually mention the anime as a japanese cartoon called Death Note then just after implies it's supposed to be funny.

What moron sees a programme cartoon or not, called Death Note and thinks oh a cartoon oh it's just a children's comedy series
But dude, all cartoons are "for teh lulz" if you wanted to make a deep series about something you hire people in real life dammit!

If he wrote a date they will still die of a heart attack if the death method is not specified...I think? Or is that only if you write "heart attack".

Once again the human condition is punished because people are terrified of what-ifs. Specifically in this case, another Columbine. How many of those mothers had journals when they were kids themselves that vented frustrations like, "I wish so-and-so would just die," and never actually do anything about it?

I'm pleased, actually, by the police response; investigate, yes. But no crime has been commited, so there's not much to be done.
Mostly because Ohio Township is up to a grand total of 8 cops there almost all on a first name bases with everyone in the school

(yes i went to a middle of nowhere white trash school)
Ahhhhh.....

Good ol' fashioned Avonworth.
I happen to go there. And it is highly disappointing.
yea it was

If you don't mind what year you go there

The problem with what you're saying is it's assuming the kid knows how to better himself and can see a way out. If his self-esteem is destroyed like it may be to rely on such silly things, he's not exactly going to be trying to better himself. If anything, he's going to exact revenge and punishing him will only further increase the bitterness. I think it's obvious the kid may need some psychiatric help, just a quick talking to. This isn't like a kid deciding to punch another kid because he threw a rock at the other child. This involves bullying and it involves themes of death. Bullying shouldn't be allowed to happen, full stop. However, if a child is showing signs of possible psychological problems because of bullying, it's usually not best to punish the child full out. Partly because children can grow and they can get guns. Yes, the mother should be scared of a possible shoot-out but her response to just take him out of school completely to fix it is the opposite thing you should do.

once you have written a person's name they will die. You have 40 seconds to write how. You then have 6 minutes to write the specifics (6m40s total) like date and time. If no death is specified then they die of cardiac arrest 40 seconds after their name is written. So if you just write their name and date then they die of cardiac arrest 40 seconds after their name was written down.

And if the people that called the kid on it dies of cardiac arrest I would not be surprised

actually could I have the names and faces of all the people involved. No reason really.

*evil chuckle*

Okay, so this is funny and strange at the same time. Yes, its a little strange that the kid is writing a list of people who he wants to die, even if its based on a popular anime. Let me clarify however, just because we, a group of nerds with our fingers on the pulse of nerd culture, know what it is doesn't mean that the mainstream understands, so yeah, its pretty f'd up (even if it was meant to be private). On the other hand, it gives me hope for today's youths that Justin Bieber is disdain and wished dead.

Parents freak out way too much at this kind or thing. But his idea of putting Justin Bieber on that list might be good. No wait, I don't want Bieber dead, I just want him to know how much he sucks.

Oh a death note, woop tee doo. Even if it was a real hit list, why was the kid suspended and not the ones on the list investigated. I know from personal experience that if a kid is pushed so far by bullies that he writes down a list of which he'd like to see "disappear" then 9/10 its very very serious crimes against the kid who wrote the list.

For fuck's sake he put Justin Bieber on that list, if that doesn't make them think that it's just a joke then nothing will...
I mean seriously, it's like calling yourself "The almighty purple fluffles" in a faux suicide note you leave lying around

I guess they need to take things like this seriously. To us it's a manga reference to them it's a list of people this boy wants to murder. I doubt anything will come of it and if it does I will facepalm myself into non existance.

I really wish there was a comment page for the video, that way they could get more reliable information about this matter, I mean watching that first mother go off on the child made me question her sanity.

(Was I the only one who felt that she had something against the author of the note, besides the whole wish her son dead thing?)

Regardless the parents, the school and many other people need to take a chill pill, the author needs to get help and the police need to get a clue.
