So all we have to do is invent some sort of sport that requires physical exertion while being absolutely safe, "inclusive" and "fair" to everyone.

...how about we just ban children instead?

I think the argument of the HOA in this article was "Take your damn Kids to a park, and get out of our parking lot" but I could be reading it wrong...

That said...what the Hell kind of housing development doesn't have a playground for kids? That seems like poor community development...

People are way too codling today, both physically and emotionally. It's making a generation of entitled a**holes who sue when they burn their mouth drinking a freshly brewed coffee because they were too stupid to think that maybe steam and boiling water won't change temperatures for their convenience...

I remember being in elementary school and getting praised by our gym teacher for flying tackling a guy's flag belt during flag football. Landed on my face, got covered in mud and as a result - boosted my self-esteem (won us the game, too, which was nice :p ).

Heaven forbid our children have a realistic sense of self worth and reality. I mean seriously, what's wrong with mud and scuffed knees? Hurts for a while, but you take a bath, heal and move on.

Nothing to do with the article, but the kind of comfy well-trodden ground we always get to walk on in these discussions. A cookie for you.

Hardly matters. I don't even know why the OP specified. The article certainly didn't.

Sadly, this does not even surprise me anymore...

Whatever, my school must have banned us from playing Bulldog and 100 times, never stopped us though :)

It is a game where one person is tagged and they run aroudn chasing other kids.
If they catch up with one of them, they touch them and tag them.
So the kid who was now tagged is chasing after the other kids.
If i am not mistaken. I am Estonian myself and we had loads of games
like this we use to play.

What do you mean the Bible doesn't have dangerous ideas? What about the whole crusifiction part?
That falls under physical activity so thats a no go

Probably one that doesn't have kids in mind?

I used to live in a community that was basically made for old retired couples, I was literally the only person in the entire development under 55. There was a park, though, but that wasn't really for kids playing so much as relaxing walks with your loved one. Which I didn't have, so that was kind of depressing.

Anywho, my point is that not every development ever is made for kids/pets. That's just how it works.

Edit: My solution to this problem would be natural selection. Get the parents to sign a release saying that if their kid gets injured in some way or dies due to circumstances directly related to the area (Such as getting hit by a car that didn't see them, because the entire area is just driveways and parking lots according to the article), they can't sue. If they don't sign it, then their kid can't play outside.

Aha! Kull :)
Thank you.

OT: This has to be a joke. Isn't this an invasion of the human rights? Were I to be there, I'd be outside just to show my disgust of this rape of my freedom.

Why are Americans so afraid of everything?

A housing development made up of tiny apartments intended for people who don't have kids?

I have to agree. It is on the most basic level invasion of a persons human rights.
Also why the heck indeed havent they got a designated playground in the are ?
Kids want to and have to play outside. Other you give them a place to do it or they
will find a place where they can play. I know, i have done it myself.

PS: Do you call it kull in Sweden ?

I'm glad I'm out of school now. I thought it was stupid when they stopped playing dodge ball a few years back.
Let kids get scrapes, it happens.
Not as bad as when they banned British Bulldog... I missed that brutal, unforgiving game...
I remember when they did that at one of my schools... to be fair, a kid did end up landing on his head and damaging his spine (he survived, without major difficulties), but still. That was the first and last real injury we ever had. South African Bulldog, however, where you drag them down by their necks, now that IS dangerous.

They're not banning it in the whole city, just an area about 150 meters by 80 meters in which the only place with enough open space for running is the street.

Give all of the kids in that neighborhood a bunch of rocks and have throw them at those people's houses.

In all seriousness this is just idiotic.

On that note, I remember a game I invented as a kid, as a variant of rounders. When I was on a base and somebody tried to run past me, I yelled 'DEMON!' and charged at them, rugby tackling them to the ground and sitting on them until they gave up or threw me off. That was popular until it was banned too...

I dont know about America but here in Australia we go by the following rules
1. Teach your kid to ride a bike, and make sure they fall off alot
2. Teach your kid to fish and get them used to the idea breaking fishie necks
3. Show your child AFL, they translate the rules of AFL to other fun games such as Brittish Bulldogs, and Capture The Flag (with tackles and big sticks)
4. If the kid is dum enough to go "OOH its a snake, i pat it" then you know its natural selection in action

Some people do take ball tag a bit too far. Some people treat the ball like an extension of their fist, and a rock hard soccer ball to the back of the head is not fun, well, I assume it isn't, those kids usually don't cry when they're having fun. I heard some guy got knocked out a similar way. Every now and then the teachers' and parents' minds are in the right place and they save some kids a whole lot of grief.

I find it interesting people always talk about how this new generation isn't being brought up right, but it's not like the current generation of adults and teenagers were either. The whole world is in the shit because of people of the past and present. I'd have thought it was obvious that something needs to change, but every adult thinks kids need to be brought up the way they were. Teaching children the things we learned in our childhood means they will grow up to be just like their parents, their parents who are about to push the earth into oblivion. I'm not saying stopping kids from playing harmless games of tag (not ball tag, just normal tag) and testing their strength with a simple arm wrestle is going to create a better generation, but something needs to change, and I'm betting creating an environment where kids are brought up being a lot less hostile to each other (i.e. not smacking each other over the head with soccer balls) is a good start.

I'd still do the same and feel the same.

But I guess I can't judge this rationally. Sweden is the only country in the world where one is allowed to stroll around anywhere, as long as it's not private property+enclosed. Guess I'm to hippy for this conversation.

And these are probably the same sort of people who cry and moan about childhood obesity being a problem.
