WHAT......THE......FUCK!?
People these days ar such pussies and its starting to turn the youth into pussies too!
I've met children, 12 or older, who said they havent even learned how to swim yet because their parents are over-protective or the instructors are over-protective. You wanna know how I learned how to swim?! I learned in my first lesson, I told the instructor I was nervous and he said "dont worry, it comes naturally" he then promptly kicked me in the deep-end of the pool and told me to "just wing it". Point being, if your over-protective, your kids aint gonna learn shit.
That is the natural way mate.
I learned to swim when i was 4 or 5 i think.
We went swimming with the whole family, and i had my rubber ring
to hold me up. But i swam far out to the lake and the ring deflated.
So by the time i got back to the shore the ring was pretty much
empty and i knew how to swim.

Learning by doing it. That is the best way.

And at the same time, parents will continue to complain to schools and fast food places that their children are getting fat and that the schools aren't doing enough to get them active. I'm pretty sure this has been pointed out before me in this thread, but I wanted to get my two cents in.

4chan has a ban system?
Yeah, but cos' they don't store your IP many get banned for no reason.

Just check rule 9.
Huh,well leave it to 4chan I guess
Yeah, I don't bother as long as I don't get banned, haha!

At my school we were actively encouraged to play our own version of rugby, which pretty much meant "no rules, get the ball to the other side of the field. Use violence." A few kids were hurt, but nothing serious.
And yes, parents are way too overprotective these days.

i don't like the idea, but in this specific case, banning kids from playing in roads and parking lots sounds like a good idea. if i was a parent, i would want my kids to find safer places to play. of course, i wouldn't let them play in the road anyway... >.<

I'm glad I'm out of school now. I thought it was stupid when they stopped playing dodge ball a few years back.
Let kids get scrapes, it happens.
Not as bad as when they banned British Bulldog... I missed that brutal, unforgiving game...
I remember playing that in school, goddamn beats were annoying in Year 6 :p
Still my school lets us play sports and really couldn't give a fuck if we get bruised as long as it isn't something they can get sued over.
Gotta love how much of a shit british schools don't give :v (Well at least Bushey Meads School anyways :p)

Erm what the hell? Short of falling over which can do walking down the street how could you hurt yourself playing tag.

At school we could pretty much do what we wanted. I even climbed up on the school roof at one point (and got away with it cos im a total blagger). The only time I can remember seriously hurting myself was when I broke my arm while running alongside a neighbours dog.

[sarcasm]Should all us 'free range' kids get a medal for surviving all these epic trials [/sarcasm.]

The funny part is that the same parents let their Television educate their children, and let the school give them social and moral values.

This takes me back to my elementary school days.

Here are the things we were told not to do on the playground:

Jumping off of swingsets

Playing tag on the jungle gym-slide-type thing

Wrestling on a sand pile

Other than playing sports, those were about the only fun things we had to do at recess. It was kind of a bummer, but we got the point. After all, the school system probably didn't have the funds to handle the litigation they might see if we got hurt.

Reminds me of a time when I was a child and we would wage full-scale wars, with stick weapons, and slingshots. It was so much fun, but we had to stop because some old guy with a pony tail thought "War" was not normal for children, and complained to the neighborhood association. Most of the parents threatened to quit if they forced us to stop, so they sided with us.

Thank god that asshole moved out the next year because his teaching job went down the tube.

OT: THIS. IS. NUTS!

Not arguing with you as such but surely the normal reaction would be to provide the kids with somewhere else to play. Rather than ban what they are doing. Push and pull factors and all that.

I was PISSED back in 2007 when I found out they banned Dodgeball at not just my elementary school, but apparently the whole country. I haven't played dodgeball since late elementary school and it makes me really upset.
Of course, now my middle school's playground is the back parking lot; I'm not surprised when the milk delivery truck backs out and we ALL have to stop doing whatever it is we're doing.

That is the sad part.
There is pretty much no value what so ever in TV.
And in the schools there is no moral nor social values.

George Carlin said it best, "today's 'professional' parents can't understand why Bobby can't make it in the real world, they did everything they could to encourage him at birth".

That quote IS taken a bit out proportion but that's basically what he was trying to get across. That kids are no longer allowed to be kids, make mistakes and learn. Everyone's becoming the Buldur of modern society.
