So three people to note on this project:

Ken Rolston (lead designer for Oblivion)

Todd Mcfarlane (Spawn comics. He's doing character and mob design)

Salvatore (big name author. He's actually more involved with crafting the world's structure and history from what I hear)

I've got high hopes. It flew under most people's radars. At present it looks like a more polished fable with a free roaming world akin to Skyrim. The world itself has a lot of environments that look WoWish. Not a bad thing as WoW did a good job creating a variety of unique places.

Just played the steam demo thought i'd get somthing down while the experiance is fresh in my mind, in my opinion the game is overall good and certainly worth checking out, the world felt a little underpopulated but there is certainly enough to keep people busy with collectable lore in the form of documents and strangly some audio logs in the form of interactive stones, i did experiance a few graphical bugs, the game seemed to freeze at odd and bad times during combat and the camera was abit wonkey in combat and when talking to certain shopkeepers but it is only a demo and im sure alot of that will get ironed out. I probably wont be buying it, i'll list a few reasons that over all put me off the game then come up with a conclusion for people who like that kind of stuff, so skip to the bottom if you want my verdict.

First: this is the my biggest gripe even if it is a petty reason, the game is obviously a console port and it feels like it too, certain things like the fact that all combat is auto lock on to the nearest target, you dont aim with any of the weapons just mash away at attack untill everything is dead, control of the camera gets taken away from you during combat aswell several times i got hit by an enemy off screen because the cammera seemed busy panning around to show me the nearest enemey, as a side note the block function seemed alittle unresponsive aswell, for example you can dodge and attack happily one after another but block seems to have a delay this may be a deliberate design decision though as a properly timed block results in an almost parry effect(very little seems to have been gained from the mouse and keyboard, in terms of actions a gamepad would not be any worse).
Second: my first impression of the world was that it consisted mostly of a very large set of paths and not a truly open enviroment when you first start to play in the open area its immediatly apparant that someplaces just cannot be accessed, its almost zelda like in its construction though on reflection zelda is a bad example its just the best i can come up with at the time fable is probably a better comparison but i have no personal experiance with fable so i dont wish to use it.
Third: the movment system for starters you can not jump unless at a designated jump down location which basicly acts as a short cut to a lower area rather than running all the way around, you can not run off anything too high as your character just hits an invisible wall at the edge and sprinting seems to have no resource it can be maintained indefinatly so there is no reason to run at normal speed when traveling.
Fourth: The dialog is high fantasy and alittle cheesy in places which will undoubtly put some people off(myself included) while others will find it appealing, the quests which i completed seemed a little lack lustre but its only a demo and realy you dont get the chance to try a huge amount so i reserve judgement on that.

Im not going to go into detail about the leveling system as you can't get much past level 4 in the 45 mins of demo time but it looks promising, the various playstyles to specalise in are ofcourse warrior(might) rogue(finese) and mage(sorceries) as far as i could tell you can mix and match to a good degree, spending enough points in any tree will unlock more options for you very much like a talent tree in world or warcraft.

To get some initial and inevitable comparisons out of the way, open ended gameplay simular but by no means the same as skyrim, loot as an example is honestly more appealing than in skyrim as you can find and make items with random suffix's such as fire dammage or increased health, as opposed to the enchanting system that skyrim offers. Big areas to explore, multiple character paths in the form of the games destiny system(which you dont realy get to play with a great deal in the demo). Combat wise i can understand the god of war comparison but it personaly puts me more in mind of darksiders, left click functioning for your primary and secondary weapon attacks depending on which is selected and right click serves to activate your currently active mana using skill such as lightning bolt or whatever.

Final thoughts the combat and the cammera could use some tweaks for the final release version and my biggest complaint is as stated the console port feel factor, i think the game could have benifited more from the advantages of a mouse over an analog stick but realy a 360 pad on the pc or your xbox and you wouldnt even tell the difference between the two.
To sum up it looks promising and if you crave a more action heavy rpg with an easy to learn combat system of blocking dodging and attacking, combigned with an extensive skills system in a colourful fantasy world then i heartly recomend. Despite my personal opinion and choice not to buy the full product im sure many will enjoy this title upon release, since the demo is available for every platform there is no reason not to try it out and i sugest that after reading this if you've any interest in what i've typed then get downloading now.

WoW's environment design was probably the best thing the game did IMO. Azeroth is easily one of the most engaging worlds out there. It suffered from the usual issues of having a clearly delineated separation between areas, meaning you could go from tropical jungle to Saharan desert in three steps, but each individual zone was fantastically designed and the aesthetic was damn near perfect. If Reckoning can get even close to that kind of visual design, I'm sold on it already.

And yea, the people listed here definitely make this game worth looking at. Just to confirm what you said, Salvatore wrote all of the backstory for the world, some 15,000 pages of it last I heard. I don't think he was heavily involved in writing the actual dialogue or story of the game though. From what I've gathered, he put together a massive manual about it and the people who actually put it together referred to that to put this particular story together.

I like the combat, and the art design. The dialogue seems to be a bit choppy. And I hate the texture pop-in.
May check it out later this year, after my wallet has recovered from Mass Effect 3.

My thoughts are already placed here but after playing the Demo I'll add that I'm still psyched and that it's pretty much exactly what I was expecting with a little more bloom and colour, which is good.

Captcha: Satisfaction rivasm, indeed.

I was utterly unimpressed.

The combat system was just mash x until you win, with no thought process necessary. The graphics weren't good and the game only uses like 1/3 of the screen.

The destinies thing seemed cool, until I read them all. Just a couple of passive bonuses. Nothing special.

Okay I will admit, EA's marketing department actually did their job well for once. I only downloaded this demo so I could get ME3 stuff and now I'm genuinely interested in this game.

Downloaded the steam version, but it kept saying it was not-responding for no reason. A friend recommended that I try downloading it on Origin, and got the same thing. Since I'm really interested in this game I have been trying everything to get it working but to no availy, and for some reason Origin decided it need to download the entire 2.8 again.

Was really looking forward to today, now I feel even more disappointed than I would if it had turned out to be lacklustre.

So after reading all the replies on this thread and looking around a bit, it looks like a game that i am really interested in! But after further research, it appears that its not being released in Australia??

Can anyone expand on this. Will i have to import a copy?

According to this, Australia should be getting the game on schedule, and I haven't heard anything that would suggest otherwise. Demo's up on Steam & Origin right now.

On Topic: First, never have I seen a game with more badass gnomes.

Secondly, I was really impressed. Combat flowed well and was moderately challenging at times, it allowed for a variety of playstyles, somehow managed to keep a coherent visual design even with mix-and-matched armor types, and I'm interested enough in the plot to keep going. I have to say, after all these years of "deep, morally grey" western RPGs that always try to make the identity of the big bad some sort of surprise, or try to paint him as some guy who's committing genocide on puppies for good but flawed reasons, it's nice to have one with an opening cutscene that essentially says "This is the bad guy. Dislike him". Hope they don't spoil that. It even actually ran on my computer, which is always a nice plus.

So this is a definite purchase for me, unless the reviews reveal that the game suddenly turns into a propaganda video for the Third Reich halfway through or something.

i played the demo for both the PC and 360.
i think the game as a whole is very fun. even with what i've heard in the demo the soundtrack is something that really stuck out for me in that its so good and really portrays the mood of the game. with the sound and art design and lore, this game definitely has a unique and original feel, and plays almost unlike any other game. a very charming and mystical atmosphere as compared with the harsh winter world of skyrim.

but it definitely plays different on the consoles vs PC. its good on both and is the same game, but on the PC it feels a bit like an mmo, and for the consoles, picture the gameplay being something between viking: battle for asgard and dragon age. the menus are definitely easier to navigate on the PC, and obviously the graphics are slightly improved but not enough to make you want to prefer the PC version. also i want to mention that i was thrilled to see that it is available on steam. i wasn't going to consider getting the PC version until i found that out, but now i am thinking about it (even though its still sixty bucks). also its pretty good beceause even though i have a super good rig, the requirements are next to nothing, so most PCs should do good with this game. there were artifacting issues and other minor graphical glitches on both versions, but that's probably the unpolished nature of the demo. but the combat is wayy more fluid on the xbox simply because rather than having to scroll between your primary and secondary weapons with the mousewheel, x does primary and y does secondary. so its much more seamless. i also like being able to control my speed of movement with thumbsticks. however, i did hear they have pretty sick xbox controller support for the PC version as well. honestly i'll probably end up getting it on xbox simply because i have a couple of gamestop gift cards, and i have not reason to prefer one version over the other.

either way, if the game is anything like the demo i'm getting it. it looks like it has a great epic story, and simply because it is said to have over 200 hours of content plus being able to continue playing after beating the game, i'm excited.

I don't like the word "Fae", though. It's not threatening in the slightest, but I'm not one to nitpick.
Watch this video and say that the Fae aren't threatening.

That's Oberon, their king, based heavily on the version from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. That guy scared the crap out of me as a kid.

OT: So I broke down and paid 2 bucks for a couple months of Live Gold JUST to get the demo, and I am more excited than ever for this game. I've had it on preorder since the first trailers came out so this will finally get Skyrim out of my 360. lol

Holy canoli, I remember that show! Goodness, thanks for the nostalgia trip! :)

Also, Fae aren't threatening. Ha ha. I more meant the word, though.

Anyway, I've played through the demo three times already. I'm loving it. Here's to three more!

Played the PC version and i'll certainly be preordering today. Looks a lot like a single player WoW, I did think the graphics would be slightly more polished. The combat is a fun action style, my camera was a bit fast but maybe I can reduce its sensitivity. There seems to be a solid evolving gameplay which you can tailor to your character. Think Knights of the Temple, Prince of Persia & Gothic 4 combat rolled into one then add Amalur's own distict flair. The battle with the Rock Troll was excellent, not many games deliver that at level one.

Well, I'm glad I played the demo. Now I know not to buy it.

From what I played, it doesn't seem like a bad game, not at all. It just isn't something I'm interested in. It reminded me way too much of Fable 1, which is a game I just couldn't get into. The visual style for one is probably the biggest reason for this but gameplay itself was poor in some fields, especially the combat. At least for me.

It looks like a great game. I'm downloading the demo on Steam to see how the game runs on a PC before I make my decision.
