Smash Bros. Endless Melee, it's well... endless.

Ratchet: Deadlocked. One of the arena challenges I forget which, has a veritable shitload of enemies in every variety charging you.

FPS: Serious Sam, definitely, though maybe the flood in Halo:CE.
RTS: Medieval: Total War, hands down.
Another vote for serious sam.

Exhibit A:

I put just a link on purpose, as you need to see the screenshot in a full window to really get its effect. Bear in mind that, unlike a lot of game featuring mobs of enemies, every hit from these guys hurts.

Edit: In retrospect serious sam doesn't have the highest raw enemy count, but to my knowledge, it has the highest enemy count of deadly/strong/fearsome enemies instead of the usual fodder most games have (I.E. Kingdom Hearts II)
That screen shot brought a smile to my face. The thing with Sam is that the swarming of enemies is constant. I don't remember it ever stopping while playing the game with my friend. It was just pure insanity.

I beat Devil Kings. That game basically forces you to fight 300 enemies at once in every level.

Around 800,000 points into Geometry Wars.

So many colors and explosions filling the screen that they bled together and turned white.

Hmm, probably alot of Zerglings in Starcraft. Too many to count.
Ya I think 400 zerglings counts as the most for me...

If you count every infected on a street in Prototype you'll have maybe 300 at once so that gets second place.

Well, 1000 baddies in Kingdom Hearts II, but that wasn't a challenge...

The real challenge was 150 sentry bots I conjured up with console commands in Fallout 3. It lagged, and lagged, and lagged, then BOOM! Nuke took out only half of them. Then I died. Ah well. It was worth it.

CoD4 when you are Sgt Jackson and you are pushing your way to the escape. There comes a time when your behind some crates and a forklift and you fight off the opposition. Well like most of the other levels i figures it was done when they stop coming. No, its done when you push foreward to stop their respawn. I was grabbing their guns because i ran out of ammo with mine. The only reason i figure out what to do was because 2 guys threw grenades at me from a distance, i rushed em and killed em and then realized....."hmmmmmmm awfully quite round here...."

as to an actual number, i was there for maybe a hour and a half so bout 200 people.

Its either that instance or when i mistakenly pissed off the mages guild in Oblivion. Had shite ton of guards on me and pissed off wizards

Hundreds of night ghouls on a modded version of Fallout 3. I just kept running backwards into more packs, I ended up lag firing until I could only use VATS to pick up the last 10 or so.

Billions, in Civilization IV when I was at war with 15 other nations, literally every other country in the world.

I'd pissed off the other nations so much with my isolationist ways, not sharing my technological advancements or resources, or adopting any religion except for the one I founded, that none of my enemies were open to negotiation or becoming a vassal state, it was kill or be killed.

Company of Heroes, my mate having capped the whole map, and filled his population cap entirely with Engineers (I was afk), and then rushing me. It was over in 10 seconds.

It was pretty cool though.

My memory of things like this is not very good, so I'll have to go with Heavenly Sword during the last 2 chapters of the game when you're stuck on the map with the final boss and his ENTIRE ARMY.

Dynasty Warriors 3. I had 3000 kills by the end of the scrap. I was right next to a gate and they kept spawning so I had to wade my way to the gate captain, from about 200 yards out on a screen constantly full of enemies, took me about half an hour.

Either that or Ninety Nine Nights, pretty much the same situation except you can wipe whole screens out at once.

About five hundred Desanns in Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. And I would've won if my computer hadn't crashed :(

I have no idea, but in Fable one time I managed to get my combat multiplier to 250 something. This was only three undead at a time, but, I'm not sure how many there were total.

At once? Mount and Blade, I once ended up facing off against 600 troops at once, before I realized you really want to shift that slider down and limit the actual battle size.
