I dont know... I always got the impression that the Witch kinda knew what she had become, but had no power over it, thus she would not attack you unless you startled her.

I love how Valve can create quite friendly characters (like the Heavy...well he LOOKS friendly to me) then they can go and be completely twisted and make something like that. It would be like if Disney went and created a Horror movie with Mickey and Minnie with blood pissing out of their necks.
