I think that the Xbox360 not using the Blu Ray format is really hurting console games. Imagine how many more features our games could have if developers didn't have to try to squeeze everything on to a DVD for games made on both the Xbox360 and the PS3.
No Blueray - Well obviously, its not Sony right? But really how many of us buy bluerays. Maybe as I got older I started to shy away from consistently watching movies because my life's gotten busier, but if you're a big movie buff and want perfect resolution, ok we'll give you that one.
Blu Ray disks(double layer-standard) can hold 50 gigs of information, where DVD(single layer-standard) can hold 4.7 gigs of information.
I think that the Xbox360 not using the Blu Ray format is really hurting console games. Imagine how many more features our games could have if developers didn't have to try to squeeze everything on to a DVD for games made on both the Xbox360 and the PS3. We'd see longer single-player campaigns, more maps, more weapons, more customizations, and loads of other features.
That said, very few PS3 exclusives make use of that extra storage, with Metal Gear Solid 4 being the only one that I know of to use the entire 50 gigs.
But the point still stands. If they didn't have to squeeze everything on to the DVD, we may very well have more content in our games(developers willing, of-course).
Just to throw this out there, if you REALLY wanted to be on the topic you stated in the title you'd say something more like.
Let's end the console war, what's the point in bickering over what has better specs and what has better LEDs. It's all about the experiences we have had and shared in the games, sure the each console has it's faults but it also has it's positives.
And let us not forget that it's the games that are fun and the consoles are just the means to interact. And when it gets right down to it, we all have fun when we play our favorite console but it's more like we have fun playing our favorite games on the console. So don't bash someone when they say they had got the Playbox 420 version, say hell yeah, I hope it's fun!
Am I crazy or do you too find the console war silly? Don't bring up anything against another console directly, be nice.
See? Isn't that a better topic that has no flame bait?
Sadly enough, I'm afraid you're right. I foolishly thought the Console War had finally come to an end during the last console generation. How naive was I? (that's a rhetorical question BTW)
I think the bloody thing is ridiculous. Each system has it's pros and cons and it all boils down to what you want to get out of your gaming experience and if you can afford all the available systems, then it's so much better for you because then you get the best of all worlds.
It likely won't end, you see the internet is full of trolls, and you have to burn a troll to kill it(even if you think it's dead it'll revive later), unfortunately trolls are multiplying fast enough to prevent them from ever dying out.
Its not about the console. It's about status. (Note to the OP, the rest is not directed at you)
While the odds of twenty people are going to scream from heaven to hell how I am wrong. The truth is, they just want to be the coolest.
Most people don't have a whole hell of alot to feel superior about. Which game console is better allows them to feel smug and superior without having to actually do anything.
So instead of training to be a doctor, or an electrician, or anything that requires any skill patience or dedication they comfortably insult or mock other people for there preference in gaming.
This is not to say you have to like all the consoles. Me, I like my PlayStation 3 and ended up returning the 360 i picked up for free.
The difference is i don't feel superior for my choice. People who like the Wii or 360 more are perfectly valid in there decisions. We have different preferences. That's what makes the world awesome.
The biggest proof of people are merely trying to prove there apparent self worth through there purchase is they will vomit sales statistics at random. "my console sold better so there!"
That's great buddy, i don't care, and it doesn't mean my choice in systems is wrong. It just means it is different.
It's childish, and stupid half the time.
The reason why there will never be an end to the 'console war' is to many people need something to feel smug and superior about. So they choose video games. They boost there own self esteem by trashing people based on what console they feel like throwing money away at.
Which is all this ever amounts to. Throwing money away. There games. In twenty years who is to say Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo will still be making consoles. I mean, who the fuck thought Sega was going to drop out of the console race? Maybe next year Microsoft will say fuck it, or Sony.
Maybe a new group will rise, much like Sony did with the PSone, or Microsoft did the next generation.
However, the saddest case is the PC users.
These are people who actually have a skill. Being able to custom build your own computer and trouble shoot any problems that occur is something these people should be proud of.
And any and all admiration is destroyed when they act like pretentious cocks to anyone who enjoys the plug and play of consoles.
In the spoiler below is pretty much how i feel when i talk to a PC Fanboy. Note I said fanboy. However if you think I am talking about you and you are busy writing you thirty page essay on how I suck (Or just calling me a fag)... Well... Your only really proving my point for me... SO thanks.. I guess...
PCFB:"YOU play a console. PFFFFTTT MY computer is like, TWENTY TIMES FASTER!"
ME:"Does it play Infamous?"
PCFB:"THAT DOESN'T MATTER! MY PC IS A THOUSAND TIMES FASTER!!!"
ME:"Does it Play Infamous?"
PCFB:"SHUT UP!!! CONSOLES ARE RAPING THE INDUSTRY! THEY ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING!! AND YOUR A RETARDED MONGROL FOR NOT HAVING THE INTEREST REQUIRED IN BUILDING YOU OWN PC! I AM SUPERIOR!!!"
ME:"Does it Play Infamous?"
PCFB:"No"
ME:"No thanks then."
Talking to these people makes me kinda proud my Computer is a prebuilt that i only use for porn and World of Warcraft and occasionally other things. Though that's simply due to how spiteful I am in nature.
To be far you could probably replace PCFB with Playstation fan boy, Xbox fanboy, Wii fanboy and you probably wouldn't even skip a beat.
Ultimately. Many people have wrapped all there insecurities about themselves, there lives, and the stupid, stupid, stupid choices they have made thus far where it actually mattered and hid from them inside there video game choices.
Which is why they are so abusive when there choice is brought into question. Your no longer attacking some hunk of plastic you don't like. Your attacking the only thing that makes them feel good about themselves. Your essentially dissecting an illusion of societal acceptance they now depend on. That can not stand. If your about to question me on this ask yourself.
"Why do you care so much that faceless Mister Kagim doesn't like the 360?"
"Why does it matter Faceless Mister Kagim thinks the Wii is only good for Super nintendo and N64 games?"
"Why does Faceless Mister Kagims opinion of your plastic box piss you off so much when you have never, and will never meet him."
"Why does anyone but your own opinion of your plastic box matter enough to make you angry. To make you curse and swear and insult?"
"Why do you think I am talking about you right now?"
If your having fun, why does it matter what someone else thinks of your plastic box?
OT: I would love to end this pointless was, but that will never happen because the majority of the people arguing over this has the collective intelligence of a sea snail. You cannot reason with these people. So my advice is stop paying any kind of attention to them and maybe it might calm down.
I own both (and a crappy wii) don't see what's wrong with it both are good, both suck. I don't see how one beats the other. Sure there's the graphics or the amount of titles, blueray and dvd but really you don't have to be on opposite sides of the spectrum. I love my 360, I love the titles and the marketplace. I love my PS3 the graphics are great... ... oh it has blueray.
Grow up and get over the shit most of you are shoveling. Its just a game console.
Besides PC's kick all console butts!
so ok now ... Flame on!
I always judged consoles on their game library and their controller, I don't see much of a difference otherwise. Now games are released on all the platforms so I don't see how one is better than another, unless it's about the controller. Then again I don't play online or care about graphics, which is probably why I miss the main differences.
Why? Microsoft was the underdog, they came in, and got trounced by Sony - badly. They made a second shot at it, coming in early, having big issues with the RRoD, and Sony was talking trash saying the next gen starts when they say it does, and everyone who held out with the PS2 was saying how it was going to trounce the 360. The PS3 at launch was a complete dud though, so 360 users hit back with a vengeance.
Four years later though, and they haven't quit. *Sigh*
Every single time COD make a report about their mapPacks coming out first on the xbox360, or Gameplay footage shows xbox game-play instead of PS3, instantly that video gets flooded with responses about why (****) is the best console, and the other is junk! and all that!
What I want to know is why so every one get so upset?
Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are good console, both have good points, and bad;
saying one is complete junk just because it dose not have support X, or Play X, dose that make it junk? No, that makes it Not For You!
and then their are those people who say "well, I have both and the (*****) is defiantly better!"
Good for you! You bought two consoles and Like one better.
Personally for me I got an xbox360, because my friends had it, and I wanted to Play online with them, (and also for halo, until I actually played it, and now regret buying it)
I mean think about it, they both have different things goo about them, they are setup for different people!
it would be better if at least they could come up with better arguments..
Anti-Xbox
-no blueRay
-$$$ for online
-only FPS games
-RROD
-bad graphics
Anti-PS3
-no good games (just writing what I hear.)
-terrible online play
-no party system
-took out "other OS"
how ever they both have some other nice features, like the PS3 Web browser, or Xbox's ability to Save Games to the Harddrive (or boot from Flash drive/memory card)
The main Question is why the big fuss? it's just a game(console)!
There is no way this will end ever.....unless everyone buys both there will always be consumer discourse over who spent their resources the best, regardless of the truth, or evidence, or anything really.
It is a built in bias that people use to justify their actions and prove to themselves that they made the correct choice and it is all done by backing that choice even if its obvious they are incorrect.
Its called Cognitive dissonance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance and tho wikipedia isnt a reliable source its basic definition from the website matches the one in my Social Psychology textbook from college. Its a wonderful area of study I wrote a few papers on the subject about 6 years ago.
Long story short, people will stand by their choices, because to deny their choice would cause them to view themselves negatively and that, is a very difficult thing for anyone.
Dear God. There is so much mother fucking misinformation in this thread. Why is it that no one can actually be impartial on this topic?
Okay, guys. I have a 360 and a PS3, and for christ's sake, they both have good aspects and flaws in measures so equal I literally couldn't pick a favourite if I had to. I don't think two machines have been so evenly matched since the Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES duked it out.
But, you know what? For the sake of people out there who genuinely want to know this sort of thing, I'm going to compare aspects of the two systems. Who knows? Maybe someone, somewhere, will have an epiphany and realise that neither console is drastically superior based simply on the fact that it's the console they own.
BluRay vs DVD:
The PS3 uses 25 gb single layer blu ray discs as standard. A handful of games (like FF XIII) come on 50gb dual-layered blu rays. The Xbox 360 uses dual-layered (8.5gb) DVDs. Both storage forms have their advantages. Much more content can be packed onto a single blu ray disc - negating the need for disc swapping - while DVDs can be read significantly faster. This leads to less discs (and occasionally extra content, as in Dead Space 2) for the PS3, and faster load times for the 360.
Game catalogue
The PS3 generally has more exclusives, whereas the 360 tends to get the better versions of multi-platform games. The difference between most multi-plat games is usually indiscernible, and occasionally the PS3 gets the better version (as with FF XIII), but if look at comparisons between the different console versions, you'll usually find the 360 edges out the PS3 version with slightly superior graphics and faster load times.
Online services
This is an age-old argument. It's inarguable that Xbox Live is a superior service, but whether or not that service is worth the extra cost is purely subjective. XBLA has many more quality exclusives than PSN, but PSN has a large catalogue of the PS1 games we already know and love.
Xbox Live has more features, but they're almost universally Gold only, and the PS3 packs a web browser.
The winner here really depends on your level of online usage and consumption of DLC. If you're a big fan of online multiplayer, you'll probably find the extra cash for XBL Gold money well spent. If you only dabble in online play from time to time, you'll find PSN more than sufficient to meet your needs. If you like to play new, small-budget indie titles, you'll find more of them on XBLA. If you prefer to relive 32bit classics, PSN is the way to go. XBL gets some DLC expansions first, but they usually end up on PSN eventually.
Controller
Again, largely subjective. It's all but inarguable that the 360's D-Pad blows and the PS3's triggers are inferior, but that's were reasonable comparison ends. Do you prefer a smaller and lighter controller, or something a little bigger with more weight? Do you prefer the positioning of the PS3's analogue sticks, or the 360's? On a personal note, I prefer the 360 control pad. That doesn't necessarily mean I think it's the superior controller.
Hardware & Additional Features
The old 360s crap out and die a lot. There's no arguing this. They also come without built-in wireless. Is it still worth bringing this up, though? The only point in comparing the consoles is to either make yourself feel better about the purchase you made - in which case you get to shut up - or to try to decide which console to purchase. Since the new 360s have been rolled out and they don't have either of those problems, it's a non-issue unless you're buying a pre-owned system.
As for additional features, this area is, again, purely subjective. I do feel the PS3 has the upper hand, with Blu Ray playback and the potential for 3D gaming edging out things like XBL's features and Avatars, but for someone who doesn't care about playing Blu Ray or has an SDTV, the 360 might be a better choice.
In Closing
See? Things don't look so bad when you compare them objectively. You know how I use my systems? If an exclusive is released and I want it, I buy it. If it's multi-platform, I research it to see which system it runs best on, and I buy it for that system. If one system has a superior version or a version with extra content, I buy it for that system. If the game is based largely around online play, I take a look at my friend lists and ask myself; who do I want to play this game with? Are my friends playing it too, and if so, for which console?
And that brings me to my final point.
With the consoles being so evenly matched, there are only two really important things you really need to consider before making a choice. The first is: which exclusives do you prefer? Does Little Big Planet 2's level creator look like the best thing ever, or are you itching to get behind a gun in Halo: Reach?
But most importantly: Which system do most of your friends have? If your friends are all playing on PSN, you don't want to be the only one sitting on XBL looking at an empty friend list. Likewise, if your friends all have 360s, you'll find that while your PS3 will read Blu Rays, it certainly won't read any 360 games you borrow from your friends.
