We were lucky. Damn lucky. Especially Jack and myself. That hit on my power suit scared the shit out of me, though it didn't do much more than scorch my armor, and I have no freaking idea how Jack survived 2 hits to the dome. Thank god for that power armor. he would have been a steaming pile of flesh on the ground, and I would definately be hurting without them. "Heidi" dropped the alien who shot me pretty easily. Looney and I are both very impressed with the HPR's, The scientists back at the base will be happy how well they worked on their first outing. and everything else went fairly well. no one was injured. Thank God for that. Everyone is feeling good about our luck lately, we haven't had any serious casualties in several missions. Time to hit the showers, I need a good nights rest after this mission.

Well, the mission to capture the alien supply ship is over. I can't believe we all made it. By all rights I shouldn't be here. Took two hits. I know I joked around with the boys afterwards but this has rattled me a lot. I guess I got complacent during the last missions. Hadn't really done a lot lately. This was too close for comfort.
Screw this. I gotta pull myself together. People are counting on us, and I'd rather not disappoint the captain. Gotta prove that I'm worth my stripes. Guess I should stop reading Haldemans Forever War. Why did I chose that book I wonder.

==========================
Cpt. Armitage "Recruitment" Shanks

Sent that alien scum back to Lewisham and no mistake! The men all performed valiantly, and I could not have asked for a better cadre than Squad B to be in my command. Despite the unfamiliar assault procedure with the grav lifts they all followed Birras and my orders without hesitation. My only regret is that I missed the last shot with the stun launcher, would have been nice to get the prisoners back at a base a new friend.

If that ship is a taste of combat to come, then we must stay vigilant. Although our equipment and weeks training were a major factor, lady luck was also clearly on our side. Lets hope she is again when we make a run on that base.

I dropped by Sci Div just as we got back, and the good news of the mission got even the better.
They've agreed to retro-fit my power armour with a pair of speakers and audio module.

Next time we ride into battle, we ride in with the Clash's London Calling, a suitable funeral march for the xenos invaders. In return I have to take out as many aliens as I can for the Sci boys, which seems like a fair exchange, and a good chance to give the alien scum a taste of hard British punk.

There is a more than usual chance I or the others won't survive the next mission, judging by what preliminary reports of the alien base show. It is my duty to these mean to lead them as best a leader can, and should they not make it, to inform loved ones of their death as best a pleader can.

So far I have done the first. That is all I think I need to say on the matter.

There for, in the words of a man much wiser than myself,
"PEW PEW! Taste hot lasah death, alien scum!"

Audio log, from the back of the Skyranger
Recorder : Jason "Cyberoth" Holt

*several voices can be heard, but the recorder cannot record them clearly*

Cyberoth : We got pretty lucky today. A lot of us got shot, but the armor held. I'm going to make damn well sure that the SciDiv guys get a raise, even if I have to pay for it myself. My hands are shaking more then usual. My aim is getting off. I need to get my shit together before I get one of us killed.

*a loud HOO-HAH! is recorded*

Cyberoth : *sigh* I need to calm down before I give myself a damn heart attack. That'd be an embarassing way to die...

I would love to be entered into the series as a chaaracter.
Feel free to use me. Perhaps as... oh... I dunno... a pilot?
Something no one else is yet I guess...
But whatever he is, name him Zelgius.

Yes, it really is awesome. I found, mostly by accident an omnibus of The Forever War, Forever Free and Forever Peace for next to nothing a couple of months ago in my local book store. Needless to say it's a purchase I do not regret. Sometimes it pays of buying a book you've never heard of before. And now I wonder why I hadn't heard of it, science fiction nut that I am. I'll second your recommendation to go read it.

==================================
As one who is trained to be prepared to face the unknown, today has been the strangest day of my life.

Victor Sergei Archenko, Director of FSB, calls me into his office today. Tells me I've done great service for Mother Russia. Tells me of my unmatched exploits I think little about.
That people like me are what makes Mother Russia great. Like the scientists who made and sent Sputnik into space. What do people like me have in common with scientists? he asks

Not one for riddles, I said I don't know, wishing he'd stop talking in riddles.

You're both pioneers, he says. They be the first to send things into space. Now, you be the first to shoot things coming down from it.

Crude metaphor. But that day, I learned of aliens. Little green men, as the Americans say, invading our planet. Not in a great cloud of flying saucers, but as thieves and rapists that steal into the night. Terrorising us.

That's when I also learned of X-Com. An international force dedicated to defending Earth against the alien incursion. And it turns out the Russian Federation has been in on it for a long time. I happen to be the first hand-picked Russian to join their ranks, both as an X-Com operative soldier and Russia's liaison with X-Com.

The downside? I get my rank bumped down to 'Squaddie'. Whatever that is.

I'm now bound for Germany on the next military transport plane they can find.

Video Log of Corporal* Dexter "Dekkarax" Brocklebank
23rd April 1999

--Camera operator is running through a large grey metal corridor, finally, he reaches the entrance of the hanger; A large red "V" has been spray painted onto the sliding doors. He approaches the doors and the open with a hiss--

"the Skyranger's back"

--A group of soldiers wearing power armour are seen exiting the large red and grey craft, one of the soldiers takes of their helmet and waves it in front of the camera; it has been blackened by plasma fire, the force of the impact has dented it and cracked the visor--

"Holy crap Jack, what the hell was that?"
"Two heavy plasma bolts"

--Dekkarax is handed the helmet and gives it a firm knock; a large piece of the faceplate falls off, and lands to the ground with a loud thud--

"The guys at finance aren't gonna like that"
"The guys at finance don't like anything"
--Feed Ends--

--Feed Restarts the morning after, the camera is laying on a table, Dekkarax is in view, typing on a computer, the Corporal stripes on his uniform have been crudely cut of and stitched back on pointing down instead of up--

"Now usually when I'm not in combat, I'll be training, sleeping or generally wandering around the base, but today is special; sometimes R&D get us to perform test on whatever the hell they are working on, and this is one of those times. I am currently playing chess against their latest projects; they had Cyberoth testing this while he was recovering but he found a way to cheat so the rest of us are taking turns at this, it's okay, they gave him a jetpack or something to play around with instead, the lucky bugger; but anyway what I'm basically doing is...wait a sec, {laughing} smart computer, bloody thing beat me in a few moves."

--feed ends--

*OOC note: I assume Squaddie is the equivalent of Corporal, but I mostly listed my rank as that because I like it.

<spoiler=Mm>Could be, yeah. A Corporal can lead groups. Squad is bigger though.. I think a Sarge would be the most acceptable for this role. However, upon reflection, and from playing the game for a minute, it seems it is what a Newbie is promoted to. Thus, he leads a small squad. There, I'm satisfied.
PS: I have to say, the General sure knows this game well. After trying it for but a minute, I can confirm that.

X-Com Command Staff Eyes Only

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine

Day 114, Busy.

As the Skyranger makes it's way home from another successful operation, fuel warning lights light up on the Interceptors' tracking panels. The remaining interceptors are forced to break off and head for base, losing track of the two remaining alien vessels.

Events at base have been no less wearying, however, as the budgetary approval was signed off for an X-Com identify and intercept facility in North America, and construction plans were laid down.

The base's location in the central United States will provide coverage to much of the continent, and overlapping coverage with the existing bases once the Hyperwave Decoder is brought online.

Thinking we had lost the supply ship and the other, larger vessel, the Skyranger launched to recover the alien vessel shot down by interceptor fire. Additionally, due to the tracking loss, we must consider the worst case scenario, and that an alien facility has been successfully planted on Earth. An interceptor is loaded with geophysical scanners and sent to overfly eastern Russia for signs of the base.

As the skyranger was en route to the crash site, the comms intercept board lit up again, one of the supply ships was still in the atmosphere.

At first, it was expected that it would leave, but to our surprise it landed, and the skyranger was diverted to assault it.

----

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 6

A clearing in the hilly ground allowed the ground team to put the skyranger down next to the UFO on this mission. There would still be dangerous work clearing the LZ, but at least we have the benefit of daylight this time.

AceDiamond guided the UCV out of the Skyranger expecting shots that didn't come. The squad piled out and took up position around the craft. As the UCV began it's advance to the south, AceDiamond called out the position of an alien on the hill southwest of the squad.

Whilst RootOfAllEvil spotted one advancing under cover of the UFO body to the west.

RootOfAllEvil fired at the alien he had in his sights, and it went down to the searing plasma bolt.

Meanwhile Doomsly McSlaughter uses AceDiamond's target data to blast the alien to the south with a rocket.

McSlaughter's rocket flushes another alien out of cover on the hill.

Looney blasts this one.

Rounding the northern edge of the UFO, Armitage Shanks spots another alien.

CAPSLOCK FURY lines up a shot and blows it away.

AceDiamond advances along the southern edge of the UFO and spots another alien behind a hill.

Making a tough shot between the bulk of the UFO and the hill the alien thinks is concealing it, Looney puts this one down.

Shots ring out from the far corner of the UFO, and the UCV is blindsided and destroyed.

Armitage Shanks flanks the shooter though.

His squad open fire, Doomsly McSlaughter, CAPSLOCK FURY, and another soldier all shower the area in laser and rocket fire, but RootOfAllEvil makes the kill shot, taking advantage of the ability of the Heavy Plasma to fire on auto for closer range work, a capability snipers lacked with the Heavy Laser.

The LZ is cleared, and the squads form up to enter the UFO, Birras is taking the eastern breach this time.

Armitage Shanks is entering the western door.

As the breaching charge goes off, an alien panics and runs out of the door Shanks is lined up at, he guns it down with his laser pistol.

Then charges in, where he comes face to face with another alien. Taking no chances, he fires a stun bomb and the alien slumps over.

CAPSLOCK FURY rounds the corner of the engineering room, and spots another alien.

Hosing the northern corridor with laser fire brings the alien down.

The squads make for the grav lifts as before. As before, an alien awaits on the top floor of the eastern lift.

It is shot by the scout on the level below.

The second level of the UFO is clear of crew as before, but the bridge is once again guarded. The scout rounds the corner and takes a plasma shot to the side, seriously wounding him, he returns fire with both stun bomb and laser pistol, and the alien eventually falls unconscious from the pain of it's wounds.

End Report

----

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

Once again an unmanned vehicle takes a bullet meant for a breathing X-Com soldier. Replacing these is becoming a tiresome process, especially given the current high tension situation. When replacing this UCV, a spare has been ordered at the same time, so that if another is lost, there is no downtime for replacement.

Our scout has been seriously injured, in order to try and reduce recovery times, we will be investigating the issue of field medikits to X-Com soldiers.

Prior to the deployment of Power Suits this wound would have been instantly fatal, but now we have the extra logistical problem of recuperating wounded.

Additionally, whilst the ground team were committed on this assault, the aliens' base on earth was discovered by interceptor overflight.

X-Com is liaising with world governments to formulate a strategy for removing this threat to humanity.

Another day, another trashed tank. This is getting inconvenient at best and frustrating at worst. As good as I feel knowing we aren't losing the human element in our raids, the fact that my duties of recon and bullet shield keep getting cut short is starting to take a toll on me.

Simply put, despite being an integral part of the team, I cannot help but feel I am slowly going to be less useful as the war continues.

Oh well, no time to dwell on that now. We have a planet to protect.

Well, I pulled the short straw again, so Looney and Root got to go have all the fun. Both pulled off some nice shots so I hear. I freaking hate getting left behind, and sitting around base doing nothing really makes my trigger finger itchy. I think I'm going to hit the range later, so I can work off some steam. It may not be as satisfying as the real thing, but paper targets are better than nothing.

Ace looked kind of pissed when they got back, so I bet they lost another tank. Better that then one of the squad. I always feel better knowing a machine is the first one off the Skyranger instead of one of us. Though with the amount of fire the tanks have been taking, maybe they should start ordering them in bulk.

Ace took another hail for the team. I hear we're getting him a spare. THANK GOD. I HATE going tankless into a mission. We found the base too....It's not going anywhere thank god, so we can wait for a tank before we go into the most DANGEROUS MISSION YET.

I think I'll try talking to Gamebrain, hit the range, see how I stack up to one of the snipers. Might be the last chance I get.

Dekkarax reporting in again, another day, another trashed tank.
But some good news at least, R&D have moved me on to testing the medikits; part of my training over the last few days has been First Aid, so I think I would probably use one of these on the field efficiently, not that it takes much skill, the current medikit design uses electronics to provide doses of Medifoam (essentially a healing foam used to stop internal bleeding, repair broken bones etc, though I hear the process is quite painful, so it still needs work), Stimulant, and painkillers to the patient. Still, I got to play around with it, don't think the Scout in medbay was pleased about it, gave him too much stimulant, he's still awake now.

And then there's the bad news, we found the alien base in Russia today, fingers crossed the morgue stays empty.

OOC: A suggestion, if you put the X-com reports in spoiler tags it would make the page a lot shorter.

twenty and four rotations of the moon, for turns of the calender
Fury, CAPSLOCK FURY.

Add two notches to my belt as some would say. The operation today was what I would call a complete success. Aliens fell left right and center, we burnt them with plasma, seared them with laser, and obliterated them with rocket. We even managed to take two captives. If the boys are not happy at head office with that then I don't know what will make them happy, I suppose they really want what we all want; an end to this war.

But it wasn't all fun and games, we returned to the hanger in a somber state; another UCV was lost on this operation. I think Ace looks on at them like a parent regarding a child, it must shake him up every time one of them gets scrapped. Also one of the scouts took a serious shot from a plasma pistol in his side; and just when we were all thinking the new power armor was invincible. Hell I sure was. Me and Jack sat down and talked about the new armor in some detail, I guess he has as much admiration for it as me; maybe even more after taking those two shots too the face. Anyway, we decided we are going to get together with the R and D boys every Saturday night for a few beers, if any one on this planet deserves it its them.

We also located their newly established (I hope) base on this planet. It really helps put everything in perspective for you, makes you realize the value of your own mortality and such. They are here, on our planet. I swear I will make them pay for this, even if it takes me to personally put down each and every single one of them. By laser be purged.

THE FURY OF CAPS OUT

P.S. Although I was a bit terse about being skimmed for promotion, after seeing how all the other officers hold themselves in the field I can see why. In terms of leadership a better crew could never be assembled. They all have my respect; and as long as its for them then I am more then happy to do grunt work.

God DAMN I love my job. Every one of those E.T.'s from Hell that I watch explode under my rocket fire brings me one step closer to Nirvana. I know I'm nowhere near the tally of some of the senior officers here, but I'm damn well proud of my batting average so far.

Turns out being a Captain now doesn't make all that much of a difference on the battlefield. Sure, when I shout out a command the boys are a bit quicker to hop to it, but it all boils down to shoot anything not human and live to see another day. Ah well, I won't argue the raise in pay and the comfier quarters. A man likes to relax a bit after slagging alien scum, and we've been doing an awful lot of that lately. I don't know if I'm even going to get time to grab a quick meal before the next mission, if things keep up like they have been. And I do so hate slaughter on an empty stomach.

Here's hoping the next outing is a big one. I just hit my groove, and I'm gonna ride it as long as I can.

-Doomsly
