I loved it from start to finish. I know a lot of people stopped liking it after
L died
and almost everyone hated the ending but I loved it all the way through. I like the fact that it doesn't tell the audience which side they should root for, which it would have had the show been American.

I LIKE MELLO AND NEAR. THERE ARC WASN'T BAD IN MY EYES.

There I said it. Now if you excuse me I'm going to barricade my closet incase the L fangirls come after me. You'll never take me alive!

The first part of the series was pretty good as it focused on the cat and mouse interaction between L and Light, unfortunately the series kinda went downhill in the last two thirds. Personally I think there are better anime series, such as Code Geass, which is similar but with giant robots.

EDIT: Oh crap, it looks like a flame war is starting, DUCK AND COVER!
I hear that the main character of Code Geass is Light Yagami with giant robots. Now I haven't seen Code Geass but from what you described, and from what I've heard, it sounds like pure awesome, is that true?
The main character is a lot like light, but he has a better explanation for what he does.

Also it is the only mecha anime I have ever liked.

I'm going out on a limb here, better than both Naruto and Bleach combined.
Going out on a limb? Death Note is the second greatest Anime (second to Cowboy Bebop) and the greatest Manga I've ever read. Naruto is good as well but drawn out, and to be honest Bleach was shocking. In my opinion that was Shonen Jump's definitive Shark-Jumper.

But yeah, I liked it. I liked the more western film-noir approach, the characters were excellent and, although Light's descent into insanity was too quick and Near loved pulling things out of his ass at opportune times, you can find some of the most compelling heroes and villains in this series. I could go in but I won't.

I felt that Near wasn't very interesting and Mello wasn't in it enough. Otherwise, it's a great series.

Death Note was probably the most sophisticated Anime/Manga when it was still going. I enjoyed every second of it.

I dislike Death Note.

I despise Bleach.

Naturo is annoying, but kinda grew on me.

The One Piece anime is awful. I liked the managa, though.

--------------------------------

I like Code Geass.

I love Dragon Ball

InuYasha is annoying, but kinda grew on me.

The Shaman King anime is awful. I liked the manga, though.

.........Wait, what?

He is an anti-hero like Light but in the end Lelouch is smarter than Light. Do yourself a favor and watch Code Geass.

I found Death Note to be good at the time. But after reading it (I didn't watch the anime,) I learned that there are better psychological thrillers. Not that Death Note was bad, but I found it kind of over the top at most points, and the basic characterizations and motivations seemed to get lost behind all the psychological battles which made me lose interest. But it's enjoyable and interesting for the most part. Just not as amazing as it could have been.

My favourite super-psychological chess game has got to be Liar Game though. It's awesome, because the premise of the series is actually total backstabbing and secrecy, rather than just being involved with it. Plenty of very logical plot twists, all tied in completely with fucking with other people's heads.
Holy crap, yes. That reminds me, I've got to find it again. The last time I read it was when the Fourth Round had ended. Akiyama and Yokoya are awesome. I have to say, Fukunaga still creeps me out, very much so.

I would've suspected many other things and probably never guessed that the killer was just one person. For example for Lind L. Tailor, someone could've just poisoned him before the event. And maybe the cause of deaths could've been diseases circulating criminal gangs. When anyone gets a heart attack, even criminals, your first thought is NEVER "Someone is killing these people". And who would ever think that someone could control their victims before death?
How could someone have poisoned him when absolutely nobody outside the Task Force knew about the broadcast? Even Light was surprised when the supposed L went live. He didn't just hire some dude to make a random broadcast somewhere and watch what happens. That'd be stupid. It was completely secret.

Also, Ryuk was completely shocked at just how many names Light wrote in the Death Note. Hundreds of criminals, all dying of unexplainable heart attacks. I'm sure medical professionals attempted some sort of study, but they probably never found anything. A lot of people noticed that only criminals were dying. Someone, or something must have been targeting them. Murder was just one of many possible options. The whole plan with Lind L. Taylor was to see if there actually was a murderer. (L even saying "Kira! It seems you really do exist.")

As for controlling victims, the first big clue (if I remember correctly) what Naomi whats-her-name, who worked with L. Doesn't help that Light himself actually experimented on criminals in jail to test the limits of his Death Note. L proved that Light could kill without being there, and that the Heart attacks were related. He could kill anyone (given a name and face) using what basically amounted to magic, why rule out controlling?

Sorry, if I seem a little fanboyish (I'm not trying to be, I thought Death Note was alright) but I hate when people don't use their brains. Most of it's right in there.

Fair enough.

But with this logic it's perfectly reasonable to assume a person can kill by looking at them?

A man, who claims the be someone no one has ever seen or knows the real name of, drops dead minutes after revealing his identity to the world. When the real L, not giving his name or face, starts taunting him, he doesn't die. Why not? What's the difference? The name and face. Seems a bit iffy, I'll admit, but the guy's a genius or something.

The only anime I actually have liked...and even then that might have just been in contrast to all the other anime I've seen.

I've yet to find an anime I like, are there any animes that aren't full of over emotional scenes and characters (or at least little of it) and a little bit of fighting in it, plus no kawaii stuff in it? Also the plot must be good and the episodes I hope don't drag on for too long...

Edit: In another thread someone suggested One Piece to me, I watched a little bit of that, most of it seems good but it looks a bit childish. I might watch it though.
Go watch Cowboy Bebop. It revolves around an ex-mafia member with a deathwish and complains that there is no meat, an ex-cop who lost his arm and leg, a woman who has huge gambling debts and steals, a dog that has been engineered to be smarter than those three characters, and a super genius 12 year old girl who hacks for fun and seems to have ADHD, all trying to catch bounties in space. Only really emotional part comes at the end, but that is also my favorite part of the anime.

OT: Death Note had a good swing, but poor follow through for a ground out to first. It was an interesting idea, but the anime was a wall of text and the manga should have been a book. I stopped caring after the first book and second episode, but skipped ahead to other parts without missing anything because they explained everything that had happened. Three times a book. And then they had flashbacks, with explanations of what had lead up to that point in the flashback.

Light was too perfect, he had no flaws until he began to develop insanity at the end.

L was alright, if a bit weird.

Misa was annoying and an idiot. It's a wonder she still liked Light with how he treated her.

Near was L, simple as that.

Ryuk was awesome cause he stayed silent most of the time.

The rest were alright, but that may only be because they didn't have the time to grate on you. It focused almost exclusively on Light and L for the most part, even mentioning L quite a bit after he had died. And not to mention how they explained everything they did, as well as the deus ex machinas.

I liked Death Note, the manga was fairly good and the animation in the anime was amazing. It also kinda got me into seinen manga like Naoki Urasawa's Monster and (my favorite manga evarz) Eden: It's an endless world.
(I know DN was shonen but it was still more mature than the the typical shonen stuff like Naruto and One Piece)

I don't want to see it. I never want to read. And I want absolutely nothing to do with it EVER...I have my reasons...(I never knew my friends could have such twisted fantasies.....) T_T
If I may ask what do you mean by reasons. I always looked up to L the one who fought against Light (the corrupted). I do agree especially the second season was quite dark when L dies in the fight against light but it was a brilliant allusion to the sacrifice of Christ (L washing the feet of the sinner Light).

If you do not wish to answer me that is fine, you can ignore me or answer me in a PM. It is your choice.

Got me back into anime after seven years of generalization and being dismissive. There are a lot of shows out there that are better, but Death Note holds a special place in my heart. I heartily recommend at least one half of it.

There's certainly a strong similarity between Death Note and Code Geass but DN keeps itself together much better in it's second half. The interest-drop in DN is mainly a measure of how great a character L was. I thoroughly enjoyed both series but Geass really has a major personality change when things start to scale up in R2. To be fair, Geass makes up for this by having a truly heroic villain and lots of hot mech-on-mech action - neither of which are present in Death Note.

Also, Death Note was good in anime and manga but the live action was a travesty. The sole redeeming moment of the english dub was when L offered Yagami a skewer covered with pastry and asked if he wanted dough-kebob. There; now you don't have to watch it.
