Wow. That was actually painful to watch. That ***** kept getting in the way of the game. The music was horrible too. It felt like it was repeating itself every 5 seconds. I am offended as a gamer. If that does reflect Playboy's attitude towards gamers, then they are extremely narrow-minded. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go vomit.

Total Agreement with the article, the Ad is designed to say "Hey, your a mindless douchebag. I bet I can control you with some obscurred boobies." I guess when a publication of nude pictures decides to diversify thier bonds things get sketchy. At least they can still sell those purses and t-shirts that "classy chicks" wear.

(Sigh) I made it to 1:09 in Garcia's "review" before her monotonous voice just bored me to death and I had to stop watching. Boobies don't fascinate me as much as they did when I was 13, thanks. And vapid, scripted monologues don't turn my crank, no matter how hot the speaker or how tight & tiny her top is.

Playboy needs to spend a little more time researching their audience instead of making peurile, arbitrary decisions based on stupid stereotypes. "Yeah, lets just show 'em some skin & some game footage, that'll be good enough."

If you're aiming at prepubescent boys, sure. But unfortunately Playboy, your main demographic AIN'T THEM. Its 30-somethings like me who don't really appreciate being pandered to.

Way to insult and alienate your target demographic there guys, and you just sent the image of the gamer geek back about 20 years. Well done.

Actually I don't see any real problem with this fundementally, though it IS a bad trailer in of itself.

Let's be honest, entertainment doesn't have to be "high brow" in order to be good. Maturity does not mean intellectually or emotionally complicated.

I think one of the problems here is more that gaming is going mainstream, while still having a core of fairly intellecual gamers, who bust on the T&A and such not because they aren't interested but because they are seeing stuff that used to be fairly quiet being promoted like a beer commercial.

I'll also be honest in saying that your typical gamer nowadays is a moron. No offense to anyone in paticular. The gamer of yesterday might have been anti-social and slightly mentally disturbed (teenager optional) but was also typically pretty smart, and it took some brains to really get into computer games. You needed to know DOS to some extent, or how to work a Commodore (Load "*" ,8,1 .... Ready.... run). To talk to people over the internet you needed to be able to work communications programs like "Procomm" or "Simterm" or any one of dozens of others. You would follow echos, but probably need to learn how to set up and use programs like "Bluewave" to read your messages and such. "Online Gaming" primarily consisted of games like "Tradewars" or "Land Of Devestation" where differant people would log into a BBS and make their moves when they were on. Very, very few people gaming today could have grasped this, and compartively speaking gamers, especially computer gamers were rare then. Even though many people CLAIM to have started with the NES or SNES or other systems to sound big and "old" compared to the current audience there weren't that many machines out there. Just by the numbers that makes probably like 80% of the people claiming to have played those game as anything other than ROMS liars.

Let's be honest, Darksiders is not a deep game to begin with, and is being marketed for the mainstream. The premise (being War) is almost identical to another popular franchise of games very similar to it (as Yahtzee pointed out). It shouldn't surprise anyone how it's promoted.

See, the thing is that gamers, even back in the day, enjoyed all the T&A and stuff. I spent many hours defending fantasy art, including that on some video game box covers. Mindless action games can also be VERY good. However back in the day a lot of this was "intellectual slumming" for the people playing the games. Nothing wrong with that, but today I think older gamers and those who got into gaming for more complicated and "smarter" games need to increasingly realize that this isn't so much an insult towards us, but rather directed towards the majority of gamers, who aren't themselves being insulted.... that's really the level they are at.

As insulting to many as this might seem, consider it's like this with everything that starts with a relatively small and elite audience, and then goes into the mainstream. Indie bands sell out and change their style to appeal to the mainstream, Authors change to formula writing once established to appeal to the masses, TV shows and movies get more banal as they go on in many cases in reaction to their viewership increasing (and some writers will even talk about not wanting to lose new viewers, and thus needing to keep things shallow and not too dependant on previous seasons or expanding concepts and such).

Oh sure, it would be nice to "uplift" humanity as a whole, and then be able to appreciate games like they used to be, but with modern technology behind them, but it's just not happening. As time goes on expect MORE of this kind of thing (albeit hopefully with better quality) and be grateful for the good games that appear that aren't slowly fodder for the mainstream grindhouse.

Oh and right now for those who read this far, I believe we are looking at a gaming trinity here (unexpectedly).

Right now we have THREE God Of War clones. We have:

#1: Darksiders, which caters primarily to lowbrow violence, and has been promoted by scenes of vicious violence and carnage.

#2: Bayonetta, which caters primarily to lowbrow sex and T&A, though having some elements of the above. It's been promoted almost entirely though innuendo, ranging from "peel the fliers fromt he character" posters in Japan, to dance clips on Youtube. The basic thing's promotion largely comes down to how hawt Bayonetta is/is supposed to be.

#3: Dante's Inferno, which includes both of the above to some extent, and has been promoted virally through puzzles and hints, which had everyone into gaming, wondering everytime we'd spot something odd if it was a promotional gimmick for Dante's Inferno. Many of which (Mass We Pray) were quite creative. The nature of the advertising, and such makes me hope that this game is meant to appeal to a smarter audience. If correct there, it also shows that this CAN be done while maintaining the selling points in the other two games above, as well as making it kind of clear that the above two elements ALSO appeal to even the "smartest" crowd.

Such have been my thoughts for a while, and I hope I'm right. I am hoping Dante's Inferno becomes the "Beat 'Em Up" for the serious gamer crowd, and furthermore I am hoping it surpasses Darksiders and Bayonetta in just about every conceivable way (and it is noteworthy that I will be getting Dante's Inferno, but have been waiting for the other two games as budget fodder if at all)

As you pointed out, even if you ignore the insult then you can't see either the vid or the girl clearly because of the other, so it fails on that point alone. Then you add in the same mentality that leads to all the metal bikinis and other completely idiotic things women wear in games and it's hit rock bottom and started to dig.

This whole thing reminds me of something the time my dad found me watching a some program where one character's parents had just discovered his stash of Playboy. My dad turned to be and said "if I ever catch you with one of those magazines you're dead. They've got poor picture-quality, naff production values and that tacky all-american feel to them."

I personally tend to lose interest when someone makes a half-arse attempt to sex-up and advert, they fail to be sexy or advertising.

Michael Bay presents: TITS AND GAMING!

To be fair, many gamers are porn-loving, xbox live-playing, hate-spewing jerks, but this... thing sure doesn't help.

I couldn't even finish it. The girl gets in the way, the game gets in the way. It's ridiculous. No gamer would actually watch that. I think the saddest part is this article is increasing traffic... Do they really think everyone of us is a sex-starved social reject, desperately looking for boobies and violence? Stay out of this Michael Atkinson.

She's a silly **** working for a formly great magazine that has fallen by the way and become trite.

And yes, I am concerned about how media like this portrays gamers as being basement-dwelling sociopaths that can't handle being in the same room as an attractive woman.

I'm really getting sick of this. Bayonetta is Devil May Cry 5, NOT God of War. And if you want to say they're the same genre (they're not), then DMC came first, and GoW is a clone of that. Jeez. "Stylish Action" elevates the hack and slash gameplay style to the next level (beyond how many hits and kills you string together).
I blame a lot of this on Yahtzee. The guy makes an off-handed comment trying to be humorous and suddenly it's Word of God. Hmm...In retrospect, blaming his is wrong. I blame Yahtzee's cult of fanboys who interpret his ramblings as such.

As to the sexual nature of Bayonetta advertising (note "advertising", not the game itself), I think like Andy said, that's more a reflection of what people think of gamers. The sexual nature of the game itself I can't comment on (haven't played the full game yet).

OT: Yeah, so, I watched the video. The whole thing. Recently, I've been reading articles where I think, "Whoah, this man is right, how could be so blind to [insert problem/stereotype/etc.]." But then I read the comments, and there's all this backlash, and those guys make some good points to. So I watched the trailer, and I looked for another perspective. Was this art nouveau? Deeper meaning? Stylistic enhancement?......no, no, and no. While a few points the projections matched up with her body in interesting ways, it wasn't consistent enough to be the theme, and there were far to many bad shots that didn't work. No self-respecting artist would let that kind of stuff through. As for meaning...yeah, not a whole lot to work with. So, not art, and it has no message. Therefore, waste of space. I hesitate to agree with the terminology of "bimbo", but she is guilty until proven innocent based on a preponderance of evidence.

Yes, that is one shitty trailer. I'm pretty sure all of Playboy's four subscribers loved it, though.

Hugh has obviously relinquished control to his forgotten younger brother. This is like the exact opposite of Cuba.
In that case, Cuba's not looking so bad right now.

Oh for the love of *facepalm* All I can say is what the hell?!? And I take offence to that (and possibly a gate as well I haven't decided yet) Not only does it make gamers come off as boobie obssesed morons (granted there are some out there but it's the minoratiy these days) but it completly ignores the fact that girls *gasp* yes girls *le gasp* also play these games, and while I do understand that Playboy is aimed at a predomanitly male market (yes I know girls can and do read it too but lets face the truth here) so I have to ask if there's cheesecake shouldn't there also be beefcake for us ladies =P

I like to think of this a different way: Gamers are the cool people in this scenario, and Playboy is the poser trying (and failing) to fit in.

This trailer is the equivalent of an upper class white kid walking into the hood in his best Abercrombie & Fitch and a sideways baseball cap and saying "sup HOMIE?" to everyone he meets.
does this mean we get to beat Playboy's honky ass? I'm cool with that.
And thus, a Hollywood comedy movie is born.

Maybe this trailer wasn't so useless after all. (yes, it was)
