if this is what Playboy wants to bring to the gaming scene, I think it should just stick to the straight-up porn.
In their defense, most people would probably not look at what they produce and call it "straight-up porn". I mean, approximately 20 pages of their 200+ page publication contains actual nude photos, so I guess misunderstanding is a two-way street. Now that I've proven how magnanimous I am, on to the bashing:
There is absolutely no reason Playboy should be involved
at all in the gaming scene, because they obvioiusly have more than a little disdain for it. They started including video game reviews in the section of their magazine where they review movies, television shows, and books a few years ago.
They get decent critics who really know A LOT about movie history to review movies. They really bring out the obscurotron when they're comparing movies.
They get incredibly well-read individuals to read books who can usually accurately cite the writer's influences and themes.
They even get people who are familiar with television's extensive history to review television shows.
Then they toss a game to an intern and tell him/her to write up 100 words about it for the next day. Seriously, they credit
all their reviews of other forms of media, but not their game reviews. What the hell is that?
In addition, I've never seen a single game given less than a 3/4. Ever. These aren't reviews. They're advertising blurbs.
GHOST RIDER gets a 4/4, implying perfection?!? Are you serious?
I realize they're trying to evolve with the times, but if they can't give gaming at least as much respect as movies and television, they should just put their reviews in a section called "Things People Like That We Think are Stupid."
