I think the featured comment says it all.

" I Hate this character, so I'll personally buy everything and anything they make with her. That'll show Nintendo." he said, giving them all his money.
No, really. This isn't how you vote with your wallet in a capitaslist society. You're just going to convince Nintendo that she's so popular that she deserves a reprint. Also, I had never even heard of Rosalina before this so he's only widened peoples' knowledge of her.

Good job, mate. No, really. I actually kinda like her design.

If he was investing that money to buy them up and flip them that would make sense (but still be kind of a shit move, but that's business for you), but for no other reason than to deprive people of them?

I think he cares much more about Rosaline than any of her "fans" actually would given that she's an ancillary character in a few games that don't really have stories or deep characters to begin with.

This has got to be the worst thing anyone has ever done with $40,000. I'm also wondering where someone like this actually gets that much disposable income, seeing as from his videos he doesn't come across as the sort of person you expect to be gainfully employed in a high-paying position.

I actually like Rosalina. I used her in Mario Kart Wii with her sweet motorcycle.

You could probably just use a 3d printer to make your own figures, and there are probably 3rd party chips (or whatever) you can use to make them into actual amiibos by now.

Rosalina rule 34 amiibos, surprisingly no results on google. That seems like a market that this guy could actually get a handle on.

Actually I'm pretty sure Nintendo has the specific tech inside the Amiibo's patented. Nintendo tends to do that for the specific tech that they make, which is why you never saw 3rd party GameCube component cables, as the chip that was inside them was patented by Nintendo so no one was allowed to replicate them.

Its the principle behind it. I hate people like this. Always have always will. "Oh a limited edition PS4 with a paint job resembling the PS1 is going to be made? I'll buy two or three or maybe even just one and flip it for 1000s just because I want to be a dick." Yes, Its not "business" Its just flat being a dick at that point. You've destroyed at least one person's shot at owning something that they would actually use and cherish simply so you could make a quick short term buck, or in this particular case just to spite them. This kind of flipping culture in the game industry is not business, nor will it ever be. Its just people being dicks to be dicks with get rich quick schemes taken straight from Cartman.
Buying and reselling stuff makes perfect sense to me as a way to make money. It has been a legitimate way of making money from the dawn of civilization. If there's anyone you should blame is the product makers who create scarcity just for its own sake. Nintendo could easily mass-produce Amiibos (it's just a cheap piece of plastic with a code at the bottom - it's not made of rare diamonds) and Sony could easily mass-produce the PS4 with PS1 paintjob. Whenever someone produces a "limited edition" of something, people will make money off it - and it's completely legitimate.

It makes perfect sense yes. Its basic business. People flip houses all the time. This however. Scalping and what this guy in particular is doing. No. Its not business, its not legitimate, its just being mean. I mean he's buying all the Rosalina's so no one else can have them. He's not going to sell them back. He's more then likely going to destroy them. No anyone that scalps is not a legitimate business person and its not a legitimate practice. End of story. Also the fact that ticket scalping is actually illegal in some parts of the U.S. prove that what those people are doing is not business.

Let's separate between two things here: There is this guy, and there are scalpers in general:

This guy is a troll and that video is fake. Mariotheplumber is just a persona that this guy uses to express his criticism and troll people. He already put an apology video for what he did over the last couple of years and said that he's going to stop posting videos using that persona. Nobody is going to create a shortage of a certain type of amiibos by buying them all. Nobody is that stupid and petty and at the same time rich.

Scalpers in general aren't doing such things to annoy you. You're not a concern to them one way or the other. All they see is a good business opportunity. When a product has more demand than supply, some people are smart enough to see it coming and take initiative to make a nice profit. Nintendo can always mass-manufacture more amiibos and Sony can always mass-manufacture gray PS4s. If they chose not to do so, maybe it's worth considering whether or not you should buy their products in the future.

You're kind of coming off like you are defending this guy....and scalpers. Sony could mass manufacture those gray PS4s yes. Even though I think its annoying I'd side more with them making a limited supply than the evil people snatching them up and then reselling them at a profit. Collector's and limited editions of stuff have been around since fan culture got big and its not going away. I don't expect it too. Yes its kind of lame that it means not everyone will have the ability to have one but not everybody wants one either. I've stated before either here or elsewhere that scalpers are some of the worst human beings in the world because their "business decision" deprives someone else of something I think is very important, joy.

Depriving someone else of their joy or excitement simply to make a quick buck is one of the worst crimes you could commit in the civilized world to me. Maybe someone knew it was coming and managed to save up $500 for that PS4 just to try and get one. Then they get sold out and see several being sold on ebay for $1000+ from the same person. Now they don't have the money to buy it and don't see the purpose in spending that much money on a piece of entertainment.

As for the amiibo guy I really don't care one way or the other. I wouldn't underestimate the pettyness of people. Some people are pretty dang pathetic on the web. I also don't care if he apologized or not. He was basically doing the same thing scalpers were doing, or at least implying to do, except he wasn't even going to sell them back and as we've established before I have no love for anyone doing such things. Take away or even imply to try and take away someone elses' joy and you have no sympathy from at all or ever will.

I'm just putting things in perspective - I'm not defending that guy. I think he's just a miserable person and a troll.

As for scalpers - Yes, I'm defending them. I haven't done it myself, but I see nothing wrong with it. As a principle, I wouldn't buy anything from one of these guys, because getting a good deal is something that's very important to me, even if it means not having a certain product.

If I may give you my take on this - You probably shouldn't side with either side. Both are trying to take your money one way or the other. Nintendo and Sony (as well as other companies we haven't mentioned - just to be fair) create that scarcity so that in the next time they release a new product, you'll rush to buy it without thinking and the scalpers exploit that scarcity for profit.

I can't defend scalpers at all. They are miserable human beings that have nothing left inside of them as far as I'm concerned.

I shouldn't take sides except here's my thing. Those big video game companies have provided me with over two decades of fond memories with what they have to offer with their legal business. These scalpers are running in an illegal circle and are trying to prevent me or other people from making new fond memories. Scalpers are not businessmen. They are miserable humans who only see dollar signs and when it comes down to it I'm going to give my money to the LEGAL company that is making something that will bring more fond memories and not the ILLEGAL pathetic low lives trying to take those new experiences away from me and others only to sell them back at triple the cost.

Wow. This guy needs a hobby.

No. Scratch that. He needs five hobbies. He must not be allowed to get bored. Clearly, he does horrible things when he gets bored.

I know that ticket scalping is illegal in many countries (including my country, Israel), but I doubt that scalping amiibos breaks any law anywhere. And if you can actually back that statement and show me a somewhat-credible source that proves that it's illegal in your country, I will humbly shut up. I know that it's not illegal, and that they're basically doing what every store is doing but on a smaller scale - they buy in bulk for cheap and then sell it for profit. They're not taking away fond memories from you. If having fond memories means having ultra rare collectible items for you... I don't even want to go there.

I think you missed the entire point of what I was saying about them taking stuff away. Yes scalping amiibos isn't illegal because laws can't be asked to keep up with tech fast enough. If ticket scalping is illegal then scalping in general is illegal as far as I'm concerned big business or not. They aren't taking memories per say but they are denying people the possibility of having them. Scalpers are not humans. They are soulless specks of dirt no matter what they are scalping, tickets, collectibles, anything that do this stuff only to make a quick short term buck. They are wastes.

So you think that the scarcity is their fault? If a product is so popular that it disappears from stores as soon as it reaches them, and the manufacturer deliberately holds back to create a scarcity, you think that the scalpers are the problem? Sorry, but that just doesn't make sense. Scalpers would not bother hoarding a certain product if it wasn't going to become scarce in the short run, because as you said - they're looking to make a quick short-term buck.

I think its part of the problem yes. No one should be a friend to big corporate business guys. So what you want me to pretend that these wretches aren't doing something wrong is that it? Scalpers deeply offend me just by their mere pathetic existence. Should I also blame movie theatres for purposefully making a scarcity of seats when I want to see a big movie on opening day but can't because all the tickets were bought? There is a limited supply no matter what for EVERYTHING! Some is made intentional unfortunately but they aren't trying to sell it to me at a price I think is unreasonable like the scalpers are.

I don't think scalpers in general are doing something wrong (only very specific cases of them), but I guess you take a real issue with them profiteering over others misfortune, so I'll just leave it at that.

Movie theaters have a scarcity of seats but it is a real inevitable scarcity. Nintendo could always mass-produce more amiibos but a theater can't produce more seats to meet demand. That's why in many countries ticket scalping is considered illegal. Tickets have an inevitable true scarcity, while amiibos don't. That's why scalping the latter is legal and the former isn't.
