The marines are surprisingly picky on who they recruit. My sisters boyfriend (who attends Virginia Military Academy, 4.0, and peak physical condition) was rejected because he had surgery on his knee from a bad rugby accident. I think they recruit so much because maybe they just select so few.

Don't feed it dude, you only make it stronger.

I can understand where you're coming from on this, nearly every guy in my family has been in either the navy or air force. It hurts to watch someone lump everyone into one basket over a few nutcases, but fighting them only makes you miserable. They're already firmly cemented in their opinion (however skewed it may be) and no matter what you put before them will change their mind.

The moral of the story is; don't feed teh tollz.

Hello community. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the military is trying too hard? Why does the US even need more Marines? I want to know what we think.
I'm Pub Club so I can't see the ads, but I have heard rumors before of military recruiters deliberatly targetting videogame players and I think that's a very slippery slope. I once knew a guy who was in the military, we wern't close friends but he did tell me a story where he was fighting alongside somebody who was recruited out of a videogames convention (well I say recruited, he was probably given the first flier or something) and this guy realised, literally in the middle of a firefight, that if he died he wouldn't just be able to hit 'respawn'. The poor guy had a panic attack and was effectivly incapacitated; he went to peices and was incapable fighting.

Now this was in the middle of the Iraq war so it could be argued that yes, we know that death in real life is permenant and yes, the military sorely needed soldiers. But you have to ask yourself, is that really nessicary? Recruiting people, not exactly under false pretences, but knowing the false assumptions they will make?

It seems strange advertising in a gaming site. But hey they have some kind of plan i assume.
I see their ADS during the UFC events all the time but that at least makes sense.

They're obviously not advertising very well, I haven't noticed nothing, of course that's probably because I'm in New Zealand. The only adds I get is the Escapist's self-promotion.

Hm, seems they're running out of people to go shoot children for fun. Occasionally doing something right. (Before critisizing, check internets.)
Wow. Nice job completely disrespecting and devaluing an entire group of people.
Just report and move on, man. People like this are so set in their disgusting beliefs that there's just no point. I was about to call him out for being a [insert unkind name here] but decided against it, as I got a warning last time.

On topic, the only problem I have with it is that it's the Marines. As an Army cadet, though, I'm practically obligated to dislike them :p.

P.S. That was a joke. A good friend of mine is a Marine, and all servicemen and women deserve respect.

My two brothers are soldiers and because of this, I know many soldiers quite well. They are just the same as any other profession. There are some bad eggs, but most of them are incredibly nice people who go above and behind every single day. They do their bit. To imply that all they do is "shoot innocent children" because you read a horribly biased article in the Rolling Stone with a clear political agenda does not give you the right to disrespect everyone within their profession.

Think. Please.

I'm sorry if this comes across as a bit aggressive of insulting, but I don't like to see an entire group of people generalised and labelled because of 0.1% of them who do fucked up things.

edit: Could some of the veterans on the Escapist come to my aid here and explain to this person what common sense is?
Indeed. I grew up on American military bases in Germany, and I run across military personnel all the time where I live (near the biggest air force base in the U.S.). Most of them are quite nice. The more career they are, the nicer they tend to be. Are there some who lack professionalism? Sure. But you get that everywhere. 99% of the religious people I know aren't crackpots who shoot doctors and bomb abortion clinics. 99% of the liberals I know aren't crackpots who phone in threats and ambush Republican volunteers distributing fliers.

The incredible professionalism and dedication of the American military is the one and only reason why many of us have the wonderful luxury of never really being aware of the very real horrors that lurk constantly at the fringes of civilization. If you deplore violence, you should not deplore the American military, if anything, you should be their greatest supporter. If a few of them get a bit drunk on testosterone and adrenaline and imbecile male bonding and behave in a manner unbecoming of a member of the military, well, they have MP's for that.

P.S. regarding the advertisements: I don't get them either, but I'm female and obviously not in the target demographic. Also, advertising on websites like the Escapist is probably far and away less expensive than targeting, I dunno, forums on steak and Axe Body Spray or whatever the hell it is that young men do with themselves nowadays besides play video games.

That line made me smile. It sounds like you're just sitting at your computer in your underwear, a top hat, and a monocle. "You worthless individual! Foul brute! Despicable ruffian!"

And so on.

You can't be a military buff but you can judge an entire group of people based on what you and the people in the video dont know? That first video was filled with an awful lot of guessing, and incorrect information. It is also good to know that you can judge hundreds of thousands of US military personel based on the actions of 5 people.

A couple years ago congress voted to increase the size of the Marine Corps and Army. Obviously this needs to be implemented gradually, so yes the Army, and Marines need more recruits.

I will form a focus group to find out what young men do aside from video games.
Excellent. I await your report with anticipation.
