Anyone who grew up watching Batman: The Animated Adventures all the way up to playing Batman: Arkham City knew Mark Hamill as the voice of the Clown Prince of Crime, The Joker. Well, as stated over his Twitter, Mark Hamill is retiring from the role.

@HamillHimself Mark Hamill
Hello/Goodbye Joker! I've enjoyed every minute behind the wheel of the Crown Prince's crazy car- I'm going to miss him more than I can say!!
Hamill began voicing Joker back in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series and would continue to do so in episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Justice League, and Static Shock. He also played the Joker in two animated films: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

While it sucks to see THE voice of The Joker go, it was a great run while it lasted.

/salute to you Hamill.

Many people will remember Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

I'll always remember him as one of the best damn voice actors ever.

I think I remember hearing about this when they were talking about Arkham City a long time ago, this still makes me very sad.

He was an awesome Joker and everyone else that tried to do the voice failed to measure up to it.

He was by far one of the reasons that Batman The Animated Series was so great. I will miss him playing the Joker and that crazy laugh of his.

Smile on you crazy clown king of crime. /Salute!

He said this when Arkham Asylum came out. In interviews, he explained that he wanted to go out on a high point. That means if they ever do a movie/game/show that can top everything he's done so far, he'll probably be willing to come back.

Really sad news... :/ That was one of the best voice performances of all time.

EDIT: This is too brilliant not to share!

Who was the Joker in Under The Red Hood? A different kind of Joker, but I thought it was played pretty good.

IIRC, he also did a cameo as the voice of the Joker in the short lived Birds of Prey show, which didn't suck nearly as much as people say.

Isnt this old news? I thought he announced this awhile ago? there was even a news story here on the escapist about it?

anyway, this doesnt bother me. Im not emotionally attached the voices, and its good to get away from them. Kelsey Grammer was like this. he was Fraiser Crane in two different TV shows, and then he was Sideshow Bob. He cant escape it now, and people call it the fraiser curse. You hate to see that as an actor, and even more as a good fan.

so Im glad mark hamill is getting away from that.
