Anyway, considering how quick and easy it was, I don't understand why everyone hates the planet scanning so much. Thoughts?
You have to scan a good bit more the first time you play Mass Effect 2. It's a very small amount of time still, and hardly anything on subsequent playthroughs. But it's still a bad design decision. What does it add to the game? Maybe it forces players to explore more, then they discover more side missions. But I don't think that's why it was put into the game.

I do still prefer it to the Mako, though. I don't see what anyone got out of riding around on dull, barren planets. You spend more time driving the Mako in the first game than you do scanning planets in the second game. But both were bad design decisions.
I liked both Mako and scanning. I think I preferred the Mako though, it was fun driving around the planets. But both were fine for me.

The Mass Effect series is my favorite series of all time, trumping Starcraft, Warcraft, and Halo (Granted the Halo series really only gets on my list thanks to the first one, which is still my favorite FPS of all time. 2, 3 and ODST were meh, and i didn't like Reach at all.)

There is very little fault I can find with the game, the mining mini-game was kind of boring, and I didn't really like Femshep's voice acting, but everything else was pretty good.

After beating ME 2 for the first time, I went back to 1 and completed every single quest I could find, then I took that save to 2 and completed every single quest available to me. Before three comes out, I'm going to play through 1 and 2 again, and make sure everything is set right for 3.

Mass Effect fanboy to the core.

Wait, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm getting this niggling suspicion that there was something in ME 2 that really pissed me off. I can't quite put my finger on it though.

I have a PS3, so I never got to play Mass Effect one, but everyone who I trust video game wise said that Mass Effect was amazing, then Mass Effect 2 came out and they hailed it as the second coming of Jesus or something. Not only that but when I heard it was coming to PS3 I started to get a little interested, so I watched a lot of reviews about the game, and all of them had one thing in common, Mass Effect 2 was not just a good game, it was unbelievably brilliant. So I took a risk and bought the game. I beat the game 2 times in one week and started a third playthrough before I stopped not because I was tired of the game, but because I wanted to save it for another time, and before Mass Effect 3 comes out I want multiple perfect save files. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games ever, and I have really high standards for what I call my favorite games. But just because its one of my favorites doesn't mean its everyone's favorite, that's what makes us humans unique, we each have our own likes and dislikes.

If this doesn't convince you nothing will
My god, that was hilarious.

OT: RPG's are something you either like or don't like... Actually, they aren't. My first RPG; which was Diablo, was a game that I never got too into, but always came back when I was bored.

So, if you have a query on this game, just buy it.

Why "convince" you? If you've played the game and didn't like it, then what else is there to be said?

Yes, I personally love the game. Apparently a lot of other people do too. But if I were go into a long winded and detailed description of exactly why I love the game, well... I really don't see the point. It would be like someone telling me why they love pineapple on pizza. That's great and all, but it's not going to make it taste any better for me.

since everyone already mentioned the important stuff: if your PC can run it, get it on PC, then you can skip the plant scanning.

Same here - well, not the speed of the playthrough, but otherwise.

I actually bought ME1 on Steam so I could experience that too. And I HATE playing games on my PC. Hate it. So that is how much I loved ME2 - I played ME1 on PC just so I could get to play it.

I liked it, however I would have loathed it if it weren't for your crew and their loyalty missions. I thought the main plot was a mess and the gameplay got incredibly tedious and grating after awhile, but the characters and their loyalty mission's were amazing (especially Legion's, Mordin's and Tali's).

I wouldn't say it was much of an RPG at all though, other than the really stupid renegade/paragon feature.

Hooray I get to spew more hate on Mass Effect 2.

I hate Mass Effect 2.

The story was filled with plot holes. Half of the characters are morons ("Well our enemy has laid a trap for us. Lets ask Shepard go investigate, even though they killed her and destroyed her ship without any trouble last time, and despite the fact that we spent billions of credits trying go bring her back to life derp"). Both female and male Shepard's voice actors are terrible. The combat was the some of the most tedious, boring, lackluster, shit I have ever seen. Also Bioware had some weird idea that if something didn't work well in ME1 it should just be thrown out completely.

Mass Effect 2 was dog shit. Well made, well presented dog shit, but still dog shit.

The writing is good, and the characterization of each party member is excellent. The story is interesting, and the aesthetics and lighting are gorgeous.

Not being a really avid gamer, I'm not sure what title I'd put ahead of it a "Game of the Decade". I've never played Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, for example, so I can't say that either of those would be suitable candidates (I'm not saying that they CAN'T be, only that I can't judge either way).

So, I guess, what I'm asking here is, "if you don't think Mass Effect 2 deserves to be the Game of the Decade, what game would YOU like to see there, and why?

I'm actually torn between Halo, Gears of War, ME2, Dragon Age: Origins, Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead, and Portal of the games that I've played personally, and Knights of the Old Republic and World of Warcraft thrown in for good measure.

As for WHY:

Halo: The gameplay style set the standard for shooters, with limited weapon choice, partially regenerating health, etc. Many of its innovations are still being used today. Not that this is necessarily a GOOD thing, but still...

Gears of War: This game effectively revolutionized console shooting games for the 360/PS3 generation. Other games prior to it had cover-based shooting and regenerating health, but Gears refined the mechanics and made them a new standard (for better or for worse). Like Halo: Combat Evolved, it was a HUGE influence on subsequent games. And, like Halo, whether this was a good thing or not is subject to debate.

Mass Effect 2: A very strong mix of combat, characterization and story. Plus, the single best use of cutscenes I've ever personally experienced in a game. During the final mission, the cutscene interruptions actually enhanced the entire experience, where cutscenes interrupting my attempts to shoot/stab/curb stomp somebody usually shatters the immersion and annoys me.

Dragon Age: Origins: I loved the characterizations, I loved that you could play the same type of character several different ways, I loved the fact that, by the conclusion of the game, telling somebody how it went down sounded like a summary of an epic fantasy story. And I loved the dog and Shale.

World of Warcraft: A game I've never played, and have zero interest in playing. Nonetheless, it is one of the most popular, well-known, and ground-breaking games in existence and, to date, appears to be the pinnacle of MMO design.

Knights of the Old Republic: Never played it, but I know it by reputation, often by gamers comparing Mass Effect unfavorably to it. :)

Half Life 2: One of the most immersive games I've played. I felt exhilaration (and vengeful glee) when shooting down that helicopter that had hounded me throughout the canal system. I felt paranoid terror while being stalked in Ravenholm. I felt like Fathor Grigori deserved a memorial as he sent me to safety while he laughed and turned to tend to his flock one last time while the headcrab zombies overwhelmed him...

Left 4 Dead: Typical Valve game: Incredible sense of immersion, good level design, and polished to a mirror's shine. I STILL don't like playing it after dark.

Portal: Because it's PORTAL, and it would take a wall of text to do justice to its greatness.

Now excuse me while I go find a crowbar and pry my lips off of Valve's butt...

Well, the characterization of your teammates is pretty great, the dialogue writing is great... but the plot is all full of holes and the gameplay is... well, as others have said, Gears of War. Which I think is terrible.

All-in-all, Mass Effect one was a better game, to me... but Mass Effect 2 had better characterization and dialogue.

Recently a certain game website listed Mass effect 2 as the best modern video game (last 5 years)
I personally don't give any credibility to the site, and only use it as a news site. Even so, it bothered me that mass effect 2 was considered to be the best. I didn't enjoy it at all, and I only forced myself to get through it because everyone else said it was amazing.

I feel like I'm missing something, Why is everyone in love with this game?
I can't convince you. If you didn't like it nothing I say will change your mind. Sufficed to say 99% of the world disagrees with you. Taste is subjective. You played it, what more can I say? Is my opinion somehow going to magically override your own? Just out of curiosity though did you start at the beginning of the story though or at mass effect 2? Did you start playing the game with a bias against it? Like "oh how dare everyone love this game more than my favorite game, let's just try this game!"

I can't imagine what kind of person doesn't find something to like in that game. I'd sure like to know what you DO like.

Also it ends on as cliffhanger because it's supposed to be part of a trilogy. It ends that way by design. It was advertised as a trilogy from the first game. What kind of idiot buys the second game in a trilogy and complains that it ends on a cliffhanger. That's like buying a ticket to a show called "come stare at the giant yellow wall" and complaining that there's "too much yellow.".

well what don't you like about it?>
I didn't like the gameplay, story, or characters, felt it was padded, and it ended with a cliffhanger

However, if you've played it all the way through and didn't like it, I don't see how I could convince you. And why would you want me to?
I'm asking you to explain why you think it's in your top 5 best video games, because I honestly have no idea
Well, it ended with a cliffhanger because if you read your loading screen tips...it talks about Mass Effect 3. So, they technically announced ME3 before you even finished ME2. It's one big story, like Lord of the Rings.

I guess for me....I love it because it's the first game that I've ever played that got me to actually care about my avatar and my squad mates. I didn't want them to die...so when a couple of them did, I actually felt something, emotions, which I don't feel very often.

I guess games are similar to films in the regard that if they evoke our emotions, whether it be sadness or joy...it automatically gets a positive response from us. We're human, and we figure that if something got us to feel an emotion, then it must have been doing something right. I can explain this better, because of how it applies to me personally, but that is a separate post.

I suppose then, that if the game got a player to have an emotional response, the player would call it a good game. And if it didn't, the player would call it a mediocre or bad game.

I'm sorry you didn't like it, but we all can't like the same things. That's what makes us all so awesome.

You're not missing much if you can't get into it. I've never quite understood the praise it gets. Mass Effect as an RPG was simple and lacklustre, and as a third person shooter was dull and clunky. Mass Effect 2 took a step in the right direction by focusing less on the RPG aspects and more on the actiony parts. It's got a pretty bullshit morality system and despite the claims I've never found the characters to be as interesting as they could be.

It won because most people who played it liked it, simple as. If you didn't like it, don't expect anyone else to waste their time trying to convince you of something you already made up your mind about.

Its a very good game but not the best of the past 5 years. Its a third person shooter with a decent story, rpg elements, last longer than 7 hours and actually has believable characters. So yeah it is good but not the best game.
